Bugger. We are ALL moving on today. All reluctantly. Due to the passage of time. However we're not all moving on to the Miami sunshine. Enjoy it Skipper. Its been a bloody privilege.

Some fantastic tributes on here. And have to say the club has done a great job with the player video tributes too - highlighting that the type of guy he was behind the scenes matched the player we saw on the pitch for so many years. Good luck to Ryan and family.

Just seen the Dicko and Mama video messages. Both of those guys were emotional weren't they. I thought Mama was going to cry.
For anyone that didn't realise just how special Ryan was and how fortunate we were to have him in our club, I'm pretty sure they will realise now.

The chance to play in the warmth of Florida for Inter Miami in the MLS was too good to turn down so we mutually agreed to cancel the last few months of his contract. Seems a shame that he didn’t finish the season though Sadly the fact that the MLS windows and season dates are totally different to ours means that switching to the MLS usually means missing the end of our season. To be fair - it suits us as we save the £50K a week for his wages and that is a lot to pay someone who is not a regular starter. He's been unlucky in getting that leg break in pre season 18 moths ago as he was looking fit at the time. It could have cost him 50+ games.

These player videos are great but there’s one former player in particular that we’re all waiting to hear from. Hopefully they’re saving the best until last.

Well with all these tributes it is hard to follow. I can only reiterate what all has been said. For my part I have sent a tweet to Kath & Ryan wishing them every success in the USA and we look forward to seeing young Luca playing for Stoke some time soon and thanking him for the memories.

Today marks the end of an era, the end of a very special era in the History of Stoke City Football club. Someone made the point that you know when a player or manager has achieved true legendary status when they are referred to by their first name ....Ryan, Ric, Denis, Tony....For me, a Stoke supporter since 1969/70 Ryan is up there with Denis Smith and that's some achievement. Sad day but also a wonderful opportunity for Ryan & his family and so much better than seeing him in another club's strip in this country. It feels very much like losing one of the family and it got me thinking about my life following Stoke City and the huge impact that certain chapters in that journey have on us. Certain departures that are almost too much to bare. Put in some kind of chronological order.
Gordon Banks - As a 9/10 year old kid, he was my hero, he was god.
The sale of Jimmy Greenhoff to Manure.
Tony Waddington's resignation & relegation that year (1977)
Denis Smith's final match for Stoke, beating WBA to stay up and send Leeds down.
Lou Macari & Mark Stein both leaving the club on more or less the same day.
Tony Pulis departure from the club 2013
All these days and occassions caused me to feel some kind of loss, a real sadness, a day where we can't hold back the tears and today is one of those days.
Thank you for the last 14 years Ryan, for the blood, sweat & tears that you have willingly shed for our great club. A true LEGEND as a player, captain and person. There is and there will always only ever be ONE RYAN SHAWCROSS.
All the very best to you & your family Skipper. We Are Stoke....You Are Stoke. Thanks for the memories. Look forward to you returning one day as Stoke City manager.

All the best to Ryan. The only constant through our most recent glory years. He will go down as a Stoke City legend, that is without doubt.

All the very best Ryan.
A true modern day great, and the very definition of Stoke in our recent successes. What a player and what a guy - loyalty is hard to find in the modern game but we got it from Ryan. I'm so proud of him and all he did for Stoke - impossible to replace.
Captain. Leader. Legend.

I very much hope he can attend a game in the future so that we can properly say goodbye and show our appreciation. It would be great to show respect by retiring his shirt number

Will #17 shirt be retired as a tribute?
I've always wondered why he had the number. His birtday is on the 10th, so that's not it.

I've always looked up to Ryan for being a real warrior and leader on the pitch, and I'm grateful for the times we got with the lad. What an absolute cracker.
All the best in Miami, Ryan!

I haven't hurt like this over a footballer in a long time. As I said in the other thread, Ryan signed when I was 17... in fact, just 17. I was still taking the 101 bus to Newcastle College for my second year, sneaking into Gatsbys underage on a Wednesday, with the occasional trip up to Hanley on a Friday. Attending away games back then was something else. Every trip felt like a pilgrimage. For one, I worked in a Chinese restaurant on shite below minimum wage money so it was always a bit of a minefield as to how I was going to do it (pouring cans into glasses wasn't uncommon, and catching the train was always about dodging the fare). To think, I subsequently attended University, got a degree, then a job, promoted several times and now manage a team at a different company. It feels a lifetime ago. As Uni, my post-grad job, and even girlfriends came and went... Ryan was always the solid dependable throughout that. He put his body on the line in more ways than others for our club. I fully believe he sacrificed money moves for Stoke City. I think had the dream move come along, he would have gone for it.... but none of this sideways for better money shit. He believed in our club. He believed in Tony Pulis. He believed in Mark Hughes. He believed in those who followed and was a leader on and off the pitch. He was the player for others to look up to. The antithesis of the Instagram LadBible Wanker "brap brap, luk at me" Generation that we're currently going through. I personally wouldn't have let Ryan go, but I think this is his last opportunity for a fun new adventure that will ultimately pay well and let him play football for a newly formed global enterprise which could have a team featuring Messi and Higuain very soon, oh and in the States... Like the true professional that he is, he has behaved throughout in the most deferential manner. No fireworks or Tevez'esque behaviour. From the sounds of it, nothing more than a quiet knock on MON's door "I need to play, either here or somewhere else". Class throughout. Legend.
