A great player and captain but also an absolute credit to himself, his family and his club.

I've also cried.
I hope he reads this thread, no idea if he will or not, but Ryan, if you do:
You are my favourite ever Stoke City player. I love you. Thank you for everything you've done for this club, the city in general, and all the memories you gave us. I will tell my future kids all about you.
You're a legend. I hope you and your family enjoy life in Florida, and I also hope you come back to us one day if you go into coaching or management.

Being 28 hes been the first player to have played the longest for us in my lifetime. Hes been and lead us on the journey we've all been on right to the top. Legend is a word which is over used in football but it's certainly very true of this gent. All the best for the future with the family

Anybody else getting a little teary watching the ex players leave messages for him? Wilko, Rory, Whelan, Asmir, Jack Butland. Ric, Mama, Huth, Tommy, Johnny Walters, Ethers, Dicko to follow I'm sure, possibly even Peter Crouch. Wouldn't be surprised to see Bojan and Muniesa make an appearance as well. The fact that he was handed the armband ahead of a lot of those players speaks volumes. Absolute legend, end of. Some 'proper' players in that list. Many bought for peanuts, who served the Club well. All of whom would have loved playing with RS#17.

As a player he leaves a significant imprint on the clubs history, and will be remembered as one of our best by many.
As a man he has also had a fantastically positive impact on the local area and his charity work has been sognificant.
I wish nothing but happiness moving forward. An absolute legend and someone who really embodied what we were about as a club in those formative premiership years.

My tears watching and reading the tributes are tears of gratitude, happiness and pride. During Ryan's time at the club, I've lost my mum and dad and had three beautiful kids. Through the ups and downs of life, Stoke City have been there through it all. And for almost half of my time supporting the club, Ryan has been there, taking the knocks, keeping the opposition at bay, putting himself on the line.
I look forward to seeing him do the shorts and shirt ritual one more time in his testimonial. No one has ever deserved one more. Thank you skipper.

As one or two have mentioned, it’s the growing up you’ve done yourself alongside his Stoke career. Not much else to be said that hasn’t already be said, so just a funny memory. Who remembers his debut and for the majority of the second half Stoke singing Hey Jude nice and slow, only replacing the words with Welsh c**ts? One of my favourites. Awesome day and debut from Ryan that day, was a pleasure to be there. & yes that song went on & on & on didn't it It really did go on forever. That half hearted netting separated us and and a lot of angry Welsh men. Brilliant.

Club legend. Thank you for everything Ryan.
All the best in the US and I hope we see you back at Stoke in some capacity in the future.
I need to clean the room as I got some dust in my eyes watching the tribute.

Absolute legend. Anything mentioned as to why he’s leaving though? The chance to play in the warmth of Florida for Inter Miami in the MLS was too good to turn down so we mutually agreed to cancel the last few months of his contract.

I've seen them all since Franklin but none have been better professionals than Ryan. Skipper, you will be remembered by me alongside such great defensive Stokies as Smithy and Bluto and Jackie Marsh and Pej. Good luck to you and your wonderful family and I wish you all the best for whatever comes in the future. You'll be missed by every Stoke fan so don't forget us and make sure you 'pop in' whenever you're back in town.
OS doffs flat cap to a true Stokie legend.

I've had the pleasure/honour of meeting the man himself at a City 7's event with my eldest daughter.
Took the time to ask her name and talk to her for a good 5 minutes, and signed my Dad's Stoke top for his 70th birthday.
An absolute gent and legend.
All the very best Mr Shawcross and family for the future.

He’s admitted himself that he wasn’t in line to play, probably due to injuries and I suppose the creepy crawly pace of MLS will extend his career a couple more years.

He’s on a par with Denis Smith And you can’t give higher praise to a Stoke player than that He's better than just "on a par" with Dennis Smith! Smithy was part of probably our best back four of all time with Marsh, Pejic and Bloor! Ryan was a giant, the rock which our defence was built around! Good luck skipper, you have earn't your time in the sun!

I'm absolutely gutted today. This really is the end of an era. I'm only a week older than Ryan so I feel like I've grown up with him in my SCFC supporting life.
I'm only in my early to mid 30's so 2008 was my first taste of top-flight football. Before that I had to make do with seen-better-days players (like Gerry Taggart or Doobs) for heroes, but from debut Ryan was always going to be a Stoke City legend. He hit the ground running and made the championship team of the season in that promotion season at the age of 19 - he was that good in his early career / prime years for anyone trying to compare our current defenders like Collins to him in his prime - no contest.
You are my all time favourite SCFC player and you played a pivotal role in putting this great club back where it belonged at the top table of English football - Top flight football should always be this clubs aim and you made it possible. You gave me so many great memories that will last a lifetime.
You might have been one of the top earners but you deserved every penny, even in these last few years. I wouldn't expect anything less than cancelling your contract, which without doubt was with the club in mind as well as yourself and I don't blame you for wanting to end your career in sunnier climbs - you've earnt it. You've got more class in your little toe than the well known charlatans masquerading as players at our club. A true captain and leader.

I have to be honest and say I have not cried.
I think this is mainly because I'm a 40 year old father of 2 and not a complete sopping wet vagina. I think lockdown and its effect on mental health is on full display with some of these messages.
Thank you for your service Ryan.
Club legend who never let his standards and dedication drop. Best of luck for everything you do in the future. Hopefully that will be back here in some capacity ☺️👍
