im not excited at all to see him back, lets not forget he was integral part of our woeful defence as we were relegated from the prem and didnt shine in the first season back in the championship, yes he is a hero but his time has come to hang up the boots and pass his knowledge onto the next generation and hopefully help make the next Ryan Shawcross I disagree. When he didn't play in those seasons is when we did badly. When he played we played better. He missed 11 games in the relegation season and I think that probably played a massive part in us going down.

Danny Batth is in good form at the moment so there is absolutely no reason to rush Shawcross back, he needs to prove his fitness and earn his place back but the chances are he will break down again soon enough given his injury record in recent years. (not that I want to see that, I'd love a fully fit Shawcross playing for Stoke - but it's been a long time since that was the case).

With the compacted fixture list, the strength of our squad is going to be more important than ever before.
Having Ryan available will be a boost for everyone.

I'm still not convinced but if he replaces Chester I'm all for it.

It started with Broome in goal and Coates as a right wing back but changed to this in the 9th minute after Broome was sent off: Hemfrey Forrester Shawcross Lindsay Macari Varion Sparrow Porter Verlinden Norton How did Verlinden do?

Poor first half but a much better second half. About the only threat we had. Not really a game for him in the end but worked hard for the team imo. Others disagree (see the thread from the game yesterday).

And what if Souttar gets injured what then !!! would those of you are anti Shawcross want Chester to come in,we have defenders who are good in the air,Souttar,Batth and Collins, but all are slow on the turn, that's why we concede goals through the middle, I'm not saying Shawcross is any quicker, but his experience is needed in there having done it in the Premier League against top strikers, don't here anyone knocking Fletcher being passed it at thirty three !!! there's no doubt Souttar and Collins are the future, but like Fletcher is bringing the best out of Campbell, Shawcross can do the same for the defence... providing he is over his nigerly injures of cause.

There was a funny thing going on in the u-23 game. Stoke have come some way towards building from the back, and so Forrester and Lindsay both positioned themselves quite close to Hemfray, the new goalie, when he took his goalkicks, and he played either of them, usually Forrester, short, and then he would pass further on short. A lot of the time he passed on to Shawcross, who was having none of that and promptly kicked the ball long sometimes hitting a teammate, sometimes not. It was just a bit of culture clash within upcoming players and the old school veteran: any efforts to build from the back were instantly negated. It didn't impact much on the game as the Villa team never really got going, despite exploiting weaknesses to win by 2.

The U23 teams during the past few weeks have featured Wimmer and Bauer, who are keeping themselves fit whilst they try to persuade a top European club to sign them. Bauer even got a hat trick the other week! I can't remember how many over 23 players the team is allowed - 4 or 5 at a guess. Useful to enable injured players to regain fitness now there is no reserve team. Charlie Adam often used to play U 23 games to keep himself looking lean and mean. Wimmer and fit should never appear in the same sentence I don't think Wimmer would fit in a phone box.
