Its more than just the goals though, he kept giving the ball away, a couple of times in dangerous areas, he's cack. That's a different argument though Not rating Chester, thinking someone else should play, having concerns...all perfectly reasonable. Blaming him for goals that had nothing to do with him as the other post did is not a valid argument. If Chester was anywhere near as bad as best made out on this message board ONeill would be out of order picking him. As it is, in my view, Chester has been good (as all our defenders have at least defensively) since the Leeds debacle. I think the debate with the 3 CBs rather than a back 4 is more interesting than simply saying (as so many do) 'Chester is shit' when he in my view isn't Talk about beating a guy with a stick, some on here can even interpret what James Chester said to Josh Tymon before his mistake for their second goal. You people are wasted, should be analysing for Sky Sports or something... Agendas, hey?!

Chester before a fit Shawcross.... REALLY... Another two goals conceded,is Chester the right player playing alongside two young centre harve's,he has been guilty of goals conceded in the past when on loan..then to my amazement we sign him, unbelievable Jeff !!! What did Chester do wrong for either goal? Tymon suicidal back pass...yup Chester's fault The first is poor from him. No need to chase the man. Hold the line and the goal doesn't happen. He creates the space.

Fingers crossed we will. I think it would be great for Harry and Nath to have Ryan alongside them for a few games teaching them some of the dark arts. This. Potentially the best back three in this league.

O'Neill rates Shawcross very highly. He will be back but who knows how many games he'll play. 20 starts this season would be great given the last couple of years.

Sorry to say he's past it. He keeps getting injured and hasn't looked that great for fear of getting injured when he is fit.
Sacrilege to say it but we are paying him a premier league wage to sit on the treatment table.

Hopefully fantastic news for him. Would love him to play a part in us going back up if we manage to acheive it. Think it's at the stage of make or break for him now though, needs to make sure he is 100% ready to play.

Reading the article it hopefully looks like a way has been found to adjust his training to respond to what his body is now doing/capable of. It’s happened before with older players where a different type of fitness is acquired and adjustments are made to their game. Fingers crossed it works out well this time.

Of course he want to continue for a few more years, the thing is can we afford to keep him here (rumour has it he's one of the biggest earners at the club) if he's not going to be in the plans of MON. Perhaps TP will come in for him in the January window. His wages will be a massive lump saved as we look to balance the books with FFP starting to bite. Gouranga.

Wimmer is probably earning similar money to Ryan, so yes, I reckon we can afford to keep Ryan above someone like Wimmer.

With the emergence of Collins and Souttar in the centre of defence and Fox able to play there along with Batth and Chester --- where does Ryan fit in all this. he can't play wing back or full back, he's no defensive midfielder Not bad for a player who is reported to earn as much as Ten Times Collins.

I'm sure he'll play for us again, but I don't think he'll ever be a regular. He'll get one hell of a send off when he decides to hang up his boots, hopefully it will be in front of a full house at the Brit.

If he gets up to speed again he will play! I really doubted he would, but from what he is saying he is soon ready to go again! Even easier to get rid of Lindsay and Chester in January then maybe?

When fit Ryan is the best centre back we own obviously that doesn't mean that we should guarantee we offer him a new contract. In terms of saving cash I'd have preferred us to not sign Chester. I know they are only rumours but I have no idea why we're looking at another left back when we have Tymon and Fox so I'd just not do that. For a club that should be struggling with FFP we approach building a squad like a Premier League club in Europe.

At 50k a week im not surprised Exactly. We’ve been here before. After lots of issues he had surgery didn’t he then he was going to be back to his best, but was injured again. It’s sad but he’s just too broken I feel to feature anymore. I think a coaching role should be where he focuses his energies nowadays

If he's finally recognised he needs to alter the way he approaches games there is hope of an Indian summer to his career - centre backs that adapt their game and rely more on their brain than their body can go on well into their 30s. Playing in a back 3/5 will also help - he was getting turned far too often for comfort in a back 4 even before his leg break.
I genuinely hope he gets back to being a first team regular - but to be honest he really hasn't justified being a regular for the last 2 or 3 seasons and legend that he is he shouldn't be picked on reputation. Good to hear he's doing his coaching badges and if this season doesn't pan out on the pitch I hope the club look to keep him on board as part of the coaching staff.

He's always been suspeptible to getting turned but only by the very best but it was being more common. But wasn't it more to do with the absolute zero protection offered from the midfield? He'd very often have to fill the void that the midfield should have been in, was out of position, arriving a bit late and easier to turn and then more space to run in to. In a team that's organised it should be much less of a problem.

That's not what was happening - he was getting turned while in position - in our first season in the Championship it got to the point where he was actually being targeted by the opposition. The succession of back injuries had taken there toll. At his peak he could get tight on an attacker and more often than not come out on top. Over the last few seasons his body wasn't responding and in a back four he was becoming a liability. He needs to change his game - drop of a bit, sweep up and let others put their body on the line. The encouraging bit of the article was that he seems to have accepted he can't do what he used to do - to date he hadn't seemed to accept that and was trying to play like he was still in his twenties. I really hope he comes back - but he needs to play with his head more and if he gets it right I think he could be great in a back 3.

Can we honestly say he's ever been fully fit when he's played in the Championship? It sounds to me that before MON came in there was never really any plan of action for Ryan and we know that he would make himself available even when not fully fit. The game he put himself upfront(was it Fulham?) when injured and all subs had been used was typical of the bloke - club before his own well being. Proper management again from MON convincing Ryan that he's got to change his approach to fitness now he's over 30. I have been really encouraged by these revelations as I was worried he was just slipping unnoticed out of the club.
