Just remember that our best XI would probably lose by 5 or 6 to the side they’ve put out tonight Good job we only played the fringers then.

That’s a truly horrible team and ok lost for the logic I’d take 3-0 loss now ... this must be a painful result.

Steady for me. Wasn’t in the game in the first half like the rest of the midfield but then in the second when we got more of a foothold he did well. Passed it around nicely and was never bullied. He was one of the players whose game improved after the Fletcher substitution and then again when Brown was introduced. They gave him something better to work with. It doesn't help midfielders when you've got a pair of statues up front who cant trap a bag of cement. Overall I felt this was an important game for TOB and he will definitely have gone up a couple of notches in the manager's estimation after tonight.

I was worried about TOB before tonight tbh, think he is on the brink, tonight will have helped him all round and he needs to build on it when given the chance. I'm more worried about Thompson though he had a decent second half but he is still way off for me. Tymon has transformed himself and is really pushing for a place now.

I did think this midfield as a unit looked weak but I also think it’s been overplayed with TOB. He’s been neat and tidy on the whole for me. Just needs more minutes and I think he’ll grow. I don’t get Thompson at all tbh. I despised Tymon as a left back and he got the treatment but with that you could see he was a good footballer and I wanted him played as a left winger. So to see him transformed is wonderful. Any thoughts he’s a left back need to be binned. He isn’t, he can defend. But he can pass, shoot, cross, has energy and in midfield can hold shape. I just hope he carries on using him forward.

Definitely meaningless in the grand scheme of things. It shouldn’t need this game to show us the young players are the way forward This game is never meaningless to those that live in mid or south staffs or west Shropshire. For those this is the one true derby game. If you live in Burslem and lost to Vale would that be meaningless? I had a dozen messages telling me to get ready for a dicking and I’ve really enjoyed tonight. Granted in the global scheme of our return to the top flight it’s irrelevant but football is (and should) always be tribal. And when my tribe wins against massive odds against another tribe of local shitwipes I’m all ficken over it regardless. Exactly!! Got a couple of dingles on site tomorrow... Get in

O'Neill said before the hame that the kids thrown in should make themselves undropable for the next league game; Tymon, Souttar, and Collins have done just that! How many of those do you think will actually start the next game? None. Despite what he said, the manager will probably feel that no one from the first game deserves to be dropped, especially Chester, who's his own signing. But the three players will be closer to selection in his mind, and Tymon especially will be closer to come on from the bench.

I know you won't change your view about being a meaningless game. But gauging the reaction on here and some stellar performances from the kiddies it was far from meaningless. Better off losing LMFAO Definitely meaningless in the grand scheme of things It shouldn’t need this game to show us the young players are the way forward Sounds like all games are meaningless unless your playing for something, promotion, relegation, or maybe silver ware. The bigger picture could be the team, creating a team that’s galvanised and up for every game.

Ues, and I liked the reaction of the players celebrating the “meaningless “ goal, they look like they’re pretty galvanised, something we haven’t seen for a few seasons now. Looking like they give a fcuk. I suspect some of our previously sure starters are heading for the bin I . e. Ince ( thank god).

The one season in the last 45 that we had playing competitive games all over Europe and beyond (in Israel) was one of the highlights of my Stoke supporting life and we visited some truly fantastic and incredible places. I would love to do it all again whether that be a first, second, third or even tenth tier competition. We had as much fun in Tel Aviv and Thun as we did in Valencia, Kiev and Istanbul. The whole experience for a fan of a club of our standing where we rarely qualify for European competitions was brilliant. Bring on the Europa Conference! BM Whatever floats your boat but it sounds shite (having read up on it). Quite right whatever floats your boat, the experience the fella describes does float his boat, not just his many folks have them boats, and some times it’s like a ship we share, can be good

Would it be meaningless if we won the cup and made it to the Europa ? Dunno about "meaningless" but it would certainly be a surprise: From next season the EFL winners go into the new third tier competition being created (above). EDIT: lordb beat me to it.
The format for the new comp is mindblowing.

Interesting debate on their lack of silverware and the credibility of the League Cup, a bit like us, only they’ve got consecutive 7th places rather than three 9th places to cling onto.

If last night proved anything, Vokes & Gregory are just not good enough. With Campbell, Fletcher & Brown we can get rid of at least one or both of Vokes & Gregory.

If we play 3.5.2 We need more than 3 players to cover 2 positions. While I don't think they work as a pair, I think one of Them(preferably Vokes) could be paired with one of the quicker players. Once Fletcher is fully fit this would be as back up or sub.

Having slept on it and on reflection a couple of thoughts:
I was really impressed with the way the team kept their shape throughout the match and prevented Wolves making any clear cut chances.
The young players were great and Smith was excellent, but spare a thought for the captain Indi, who played one of his best games for a long time, against his old manager. People on here forcast Traore would tear him to shreds.

Overall I felt this was an important game for TOB and he will definitely have gone up a couple of notches in the manager's estimation after tonight. It doesn’t. Tymon is the one for me though that should be next in line. He was head and shoulders above TOB and Thompson. Had fewer touches and lost the ball more times. Some might say that players like that will get punished against a harder working championship team. Also completed fewer passes and was bypassed more times. Not trying to put the lad down but he certainly wasn’t head and shoulders above the other lads.
