The pressure from the deduction has been taken off Wigan. If the points were deducted they might not be approaching matches with such high confidence. The whole thing is a farce, they should get the points deducted next season regardless. To me it looks like Wigan took a calculated risk after they beat us, it's a scandal. Any idea if they have a transfer ban too? I don't think the deduction is enough. i imagine that if the owners have really done one and dont win the bet they will liquidate, who the hell is buying a poxy championship team in the arse end of nowhere that couldnt even sell its ground out when in the top flight?

For with almost all of the Prem clubs already tied down or unaffordable (Newcastle a rare exception), these people see a Championship club as a Golden Ticket to the Promised Land.
Of course, every other one of the 23 club owners think the same and as we all know, 20 or 21 of them are going to be disappointed each season, but still they come.
And as for not selling out 25k every week, that doesn't really matter, since the likes of Bournemouth, Watford and Burnley demonstrate that if properly managed, clubs can get by in the Prem with less than that.

Hope they don't get the deduction. They will get them but sheff wed should get their decision and deduction before Wednesday games as well as that's wrong. That could save Wigan.

Wigan deserve an open top bus parade if they do survive.

Is there any coroborating 'story' to this, or is it simply a one sentence headline?

According to the Mail "The EFL have confirmed that the bottom three clubs in the Championship on Wednesday evening will be relegated subject to other on-going disciplinary proceedings, but there is little prospect they will be completed by the mid-August deadline."
BUT "Both clubs would have the right to appeal against such sanctions however, and given the amount of time required to complete such disciplinary proceedings it is unlikely the process would be completed before the start of next season."
So the Mail guy is saying the points deduction will happen on Wed night but the appeal won't be heard before the official changeover of EFL/Prem clubs in mid August.
(I think)

I would say it makes it far more unlikely for Wigan to overturn the deduction after Wednesday and the EFL then to turn around and relegate another team. Wigan play Fulham don't they? Need to win. I guess the EFL are desperately hoping Wigan stay up automatically to avoid a bit of a mess. Can they get Rob Styles out of retirement for that one ?

What a mess. One of the many reasons we were all eager to get ourselves out of the hole we were in, without the need for relying on points deductions.
I can see Wigan appealing and I can see it being thrown over the fence to an appeals committee, with any decision being delayed until next year. I can't see Sheffield Wednesday getting their decision this season either.

How does this effect all the bets that have been placed on the relegation spots? They're simply not going to follow through with the punishments if it means that as a result, those teams finish in the bottom three, are they?

Worth noting they are appealing different things.
Sheff Weds are appealing against the fact they have been charged with misconduct.
Wigan appeal is based on the fact that administration was unavoidable due to Covid.
