172 lead going into the second innings. Hopefully we can make quick runs like in the last test and pile the pressure on. Providing the weather holds out we should declare before the end of the day

Broady bringing it back for us here, definitely proving his point. I have great sympathy with the selectors on this particular subject. So while there is no doubt that Anderson and Broad are, by some distance, the finest pace bowlers we have in England we know a pace attack with both players in does not work overseas particularly in Australia. The challenging question is how do we develop the bowlers we need to play overseas if we don’t play them (and give the test experience) if we don’t play them in home tests. Because usually playing Broad and Anderson means we have space for just one more seam bowler (Stokes being the 4th seamer all rounder). Tricky one!

Providing the weather holds out we should declare before the end of the day It's 99.9% going to be a wash out tomorrow but.. will we want to put unnecessary pressure on ourselves just in case there is play tomorrow? I think if we can get the lead to 320ish with an hour to go tonight I'd declare also, just depends on how we bat.

I mean, he has great spells and the wicket he got in this innings was a good one but he is pretty expensive at times. Saying that, I think he'll be great in Australia and also Wood too, which proves you right in terms of how difficult it is for the selectors.

Which means he needs to play test cricket. He is though a player who has more potential than any other bowler we have to become a world class quick. That astonishing spell against Steve Smith last year is evidence of that. Smith was ridiculously comfortable against all our bowlers until Archer found his gears and generated a spell of quick bowling the likes of which we’ve not seen for years. Maybe since Devon Malcom. Wood too needs developing, although he is older he hasn’t, for various reasons, played much test cricket. He is also needed for Australia.

I reckon he bowls too many consecutive overs. More of an impact bowler really

These openers need to get a move on, we may only have Tuesday to get them all out.

Just taken a look at my weather app - could be some showers around 4 o’clock? With tomorrow looking like a washout, England need to get a move on this afternoon.

I don’t think there’s any need to change the order, they’re all fluent players after these two.

I don’t think there’s any need to change the order, they’re all fluent players after these two. I think they should have made one change and opened with Stokes or Buttler. Depending on who got out replace like with like so we maintain a hitter and a blocker as we look to build a score quickly.

I think at the moment if Windies has the chance to call for a review I think they would probably not bother as they’d rather this partnership stays intact as long as possible.
Reminds me of when Clive Lloyd dropped Boycs in the 1979 WC final. He was quite happy to have the opening partnership stay together as long as possible.

Root's arrival shows how we are not playing as a team.
He's pressing hard for fast runs.
Our openers didn't.
They should have.
I blame the openers and the captain equally for that.

Any credit to the bowlers? Not particularly in this situation. This is a question mainly of intent and capability of the batsmen.

Perhaps we should just play out our innings so we're around 600 ahead. The match is drawn then we'd have to slice up the trophy and give a 1/2 to each side. Good idea? What do you mean no!

I actually don't mind the openers opening myself but why the last 50 runs and half hour? Not needed.
Really poor captaincy.

Well done England.
We are looking good to win this test and the series.
Not 100% perfect though.
9/10 for today.
Which ain’t shabby!

A great days play. Disappointed early on to allow the WIndies to avoid the follow on but Broad and Anderson soon end the resistance. In hindsight it was for best England could not enforce a follow on.
A steady second innings to set a good target, then Broad finishes a perfect day with leaving the WIndies 10-2.

Should be a comfortable win now for England but I feel sorry for West Indies a bit. Three back to back Tests have clearly been too much for them and they've reached breaking point but fair play to them for coming over and contributing to a good series.
Also, I thought Cornwall bowled well enough to pick up a couple of weeks so also felt a bit for him.

Monsooning it down in Manchester this morning, the chances of play today are pretty much non-existent.....
