Took this just now, modest amount of space available but a couple of packets of seeds works wonders. Wisteria going up the porch post. Random driftwood into the bargain. Half barrel would go in the right corner. Full South facing so it gets pretty warm WHEN the sun shines. View AttachmentYou could fit a few in there 😉

Must admit those do look pretty good, how could little ole bamboo possibly escape one of those!!.🙂 think I'll get one anyway just to enhance the front of my place. One real success I'm pleased with is growing 4 small oak saplings having put the acorns randomly into a spare pot. They are mate but I'm frugal like you and having found a cheaper one I ended up with that. But I completely understand your slightly isolated position and in those circumstances it's a decent alternative. Another option would be Amazon I know they have a few for sale but it's difficult to get an accurate look at the quality. Some of the 3' diam barrels I've got I've had for over 30 years, but I can't remember where I got them from - they've never had any sort of preservative put on them. The main thing I'd say to anyone wanting a half-barrel is, even if you are frugal, to buy the sturdiest, most solid one you can possibly afford....... it will hugely reward you in the end. Frugality might encourage you to buy one of the cheaper sort of others you'll find, but in the long run the more solid ones will serve you better as their extra-sturdiness will mean that they'll outlast the 'lighter' sorts. It's like anything, really - I think the old (and sensible) saying is sth like 'buy cheap, buy twice'.... Think of my pal Saint Delia and her constant recommendation for buying 'good, solid' roasting tins! From memory (long ago!) I think you might sometimes find them called/advertised as 'puncheons'. Let us know how you get on, please!

Do you need to do any maintenance to them to stop them from drying out ? I'd been thinking of having a "non-invasive" type of bamboo for a couple of years but judging from the comments on here I'm glad I didn't get some. I've always thought what a sensible chap you are, Dees!

Let us know how you get on, please! Absolutely there is no substitute for due diligence 🙂 the particular ones I purchased were absolutely rock solid and in "perfect" condition. The price was imho an incredible bargain £15 for the half and £25 for my full and too good to not take advantage of, I think in my case timing was crucial and I've seen that although he still has then for sale the price has risen by a fiver.

Anyone got any suggestions to get rid of " greenfly" on Lupins. They have their own specialist flock.

Anyone got any suggestions to get rid of " greenfly" on Lupins. They have their own specialist flock. Try spraying them with washing up liquid diluted in water. It should kill them although they may not fall from the plant for a couple of days. I've had mixed results with this method. Failing that it's My cousin said that vinegar kills aphids as it burns them to death. Just make sure the solution isn't too strong as it can damage the plant. sprayed on an infested plant will help control the aphids. Failing that it's a proprietary bug/greenfly spray. I always try to make sure there aren't any ladybirds in the vicinity when I spray as it could harm them.

Anyone got any suggestions to get rid of " greenfly" on Lupins. They have their own specialist flock. As Dee says soapy water sprayed onto them it does work a treat make sure you get soapy bubbles I think that's the trick with this method enough bubbles, repeat the process over a few days until they're gone and literally soak the whole plant. Rinse the soap off after a couple of hours or so so it doesn't harm the plant/ shrub

I just went down the internet rabbit hole of how to control bamboo because reading message boards can have that effect. Looks like a lot of annual work and even then I'd be worrying about it getting out somehow. Unless I was actually using bamboo as a raw material then maybe it would be worth it, but yikes, looks best to stay away from. I do like the look of it though. There are professionals that specialize in getting rid of the stuff round here. just say no

Then two ways imho crush them with your fingers if you have the time and patience or a proper pesticide.

Probably not everyone's cup of tea, but I've really got into growing roses over the last few years. I've also taken a lot of cuttings, most of which have rooted and a few are flowering already. I've just been round the garden this morning and a couple of roses are flowering quite well now. This one is Rhapsody In Blue

This one is a standard rose that I bought for £1.00 from our local garden centre - they'd lost the name tag but said it was red. The flower is literally the size of my hand.

Bamboo central alert!. I might have neglected to mention that a few weeks ago I actually bought some black bamboo seeds and having read the propagation instructions for which you need a chemistry degree I thought I'd failed miserably. They weren't expensive so it was a case of what the heck, give em a go. On the basis nothing was going to happen I used the material for a spider plant tendril. They've germinated!. Don't tell murph. 😳😁
