I mentioned buying a half barrel a few weeks ago this is how it's worked out so far. Foxglove, Delphinium, Digitalis, Lupin and Poppy. Lovely - I think the planting scheme and colours that you've used here are just great - I'll be "borrowing" this idea when we plant up our next pot ! The Lupin and Poppy haven't flowered yet, the buds are there and aren't far away, once they have I'll post an updated version that should give some more colours. This was on the 28th Feb when I planted it up.

And, DEFINITELY FINALLY.............just been down to the greenhouse and it's a bit warm in there ! Mate your garden is huge I wish I had that room, mine is about 25foot by 30foot most was taken up be a house extension prior to me being into gardening its halved the outdoor space. The variety and quality of your plants are a credit to you pal I'm incredibly jealous 🙂 Thanks very much mate for your kind comments - I'm not satisfied with it though (that's gardening for you) as there are still quite a few areas where it's still "work in progress" and will no doubt get altered in the near future. A lot of the plants are either grown from seed in the greenhouse, "rescue plants" from garden centre where they're sold for a quid or so and I bring them home and see if they'll survive (they usually do), or they're cuttings from my own (or friends and neighbours) plants. I do buy a few at normal price when there's no alternative or it's something I really like.

I'm the same I used to think it was expensive but as you say asda have loads of plants and leave them all day and don't water and once they wilt they have to discount them!!! If they watered they wouldn't but nobody looks after them. The red lime was £15 from asda Cheadle at the end of the day!!

I've posted about this before but a couple of years ago I got a magnolia stellata for £12.99 from a nursery (Jacksons at Bagnall), about 3 ft tall, lovely specimen. I went to Bridgemere (when it was Wyevale) a few weeks earlier and a similar sized plant was £62.99 !

All stunning pics, Dees! Do the slugs &/or snails bother you re. that pretty hosta? (**She crosses her fingers and thinks 'I hope so not.' **)Very kind of you to say so Murph - thanks very much ! We don't really have any problem with the blighters, although it is one of the tougher leaved hostas which does tend to deter the slugs and snails. I love hostas but my garden is snail central I’m afraid ….they are indestructible in this part of Bispham , nothing bar a scaled down nuclear strike will get rid of them .

Same here on both points, Bisp. Do we all do the midnight slug & snail patrol with rubber gloves, a torch and a bucket? I tip them out of the bucket into the field because although they're major nuisances I could never kill any of them.

That’s your issue then ,they sneak back under the fence with reinforcements for a counter attack ! A typical Gastropod Mollusc tactic …stand firm and add some salt water to your bucket that will have them blowing bubbles quick enough like a West Ham supporter ! Never use beer that will only drown them and it’s to be considered wasteful when it can be consumed by defending forces aka the gardener !

This was on the 28th Feb when I planted it up. I'm stuck with pots only these days and I'm thinking of adding some bamboo to the collection. The recommended planter is timber, especially a half barrel due to the nature of the roots. Yours looks perfect, any recommendations for getting one delivered much appreciated, this somewhat remote bit of Wales isn't best served by comprehensive garden centres.

I grew some yellow bamboo in a pot some time ago .It looked great for a number of years , then the pot did not contain it as well as I would have liked .it was growing out of the top and proving difficult to look after , particularly watering .In the I decided to get rid of it , that was a nightmare in it self,I had to break the pot and then dispose of an enormous rootball . I love bamboo but would never plant it in a container again .

Mate I'd recommend Facebook market place see of anyone local is selling them that's where I got mine from, it fit in my boot of my Focus with the back seat down although to be fair I did also have the full barrel in too !! Edit: I've just had a quick look and there are loads for sale in Wales so I would imagine there will be some close by you.

I don't like bamboo, Chuff, so if you do get one I'M GOING TO KEEP BOTH YOUR HOUSEWARMING PRESENTS. And I'm not kidding. And anyway, Bisp speaks the truth about them getting too big - see above. I was going to say the same, but he beat me to it. Get a Buddleia. 🦋 Thank you!

I just went down the internet rabbit hole of how to control bamboo because reading message boards can have that effect. Looks like a lot of annual work and even then I'd be worrying about it getting out somehow. Unless I was actually using bamboo as a raw material then maybe it would be worth it, but yikes, looks best to stay away from. I do like the look of it though.

They are mate but I'm frugal like you and having found a cheaper one I ended up with that. But I completely understand your slightly isolated position and in those circumstances it's a decent alternative. Another option would be Amazon I know they have a few for sale but it's difficult to get an accurate look at the quality.

Do you need to do any maintenance to them to stop them from drying out ? I'd been thinking of having a "non-invasive" type of bamboo for a couple of years but judging from the comments on here I'm glad I didn't get some.

Well I'm not 100% sure if im honest when I got it it was stored outside and was already "wet" and solid, I gave it a ten minute clean with water and it was good to go. Once I drilled a few drainage holes in it as it was the bottom half of the barrel(top already has a 2 inch centre hole in) I filled it with compost and planted it up. I water when it looks like it needs it and that's it really. They are Oak and are robust and I'm not worried about them breaking down anytime soon and the steel bands look to keep the struts really tightly held together.

Took this just now, modest amount of space available but a couple of packets of seeds works wonders. Wisteria going up the porch post. Random driftwood into the bargain. Half barrel would go in the right corner. Full South facing so it gets pretty warm WHEN the sun shines.
