Clownish politicians play a very dangerous game. That approach will cut you a fair amount of slack, it already has done throughout the Bluffer's life to date. But when the electorate stops laughing with you and starts laughing at you because you're in a position where you are now expected to have at least a degree of competence amidst all the bluff and bluster, things can go south very quickly. John Major was not a clownish politician. His govt was associated with sleaze and he never shook it off. The Bluffer's govt is now associated with rank incompetence and that might stick too. With an undercurrent of cronyism and sleaze too. You can see why the ratings are falling away. Brexit will give him a boost in January. It's too easy to dismiss him as a buffer and clown. There's more to the man. His performance this time last year when he was getting battered in parliament and in the media (and courts!) showed he has bottle and backbone. That counts. On the other hand, he hadn't, at that time fucked up in any serious way. That can't really be said now. But, as you say, his standing in early next year may be the deciding factor in how long he stays pm. That's why I think he's a Bluffer and why I said clownish politicians play a dangerous game. Eventually the schtick runs out and people will tire of it, especially when the shit hits the fan and you actually need to, you know, govern effectively. He hasn't managed that either with Brexit or Covid so far. I imagine he thought his bluff and blustering would get him into a second term at least, but not looking very likely to even be in charge of the Party at the next election at present. I don't think he's stupid. But, I agree with an ex-colleague of mine who worked with him when he was Mayor of London. He thought that the amiable bumbler schtick is very much a 'front', but underneath that there really isn't very much. He doesn't do detail, he doesn't really have much of a grasp on anything apparently, relying on others to do everything for him, and for an ebullient, tally-ho chaps, British eccentricity to appeal to the public. A British version of Trump to some degree, which is probably why they get along so well. Like I say, that will get you so far, and in 'ordinary' times eg non-Brexit, non-Covid, with calmer political waters he'd probably have coped with the occasional demands of the top job, providing moments of amusement while the country effectively plodded along on its own. Clearly not fit for purpose as PM now.

Like the lying terrorist sympathising Marxist bastard he smashed back to his allotment, the December election result reflected more on the distrust and dislike the general public had for a Labour Party infested with far left Marxists, trots. and the unelectable Grandpa Racist, just contemplate that for a Mo. Boris like it or not has annihilated your far left dreams, his job is done once Brexit is sealed he will be gone Poor Boris Maybe you and 'the lads' could set up a just giving for him! Is twatter your go to reference for everything in life ? yet again you have shown yourself up on yet another thread I wonder when admin will pull this one to protect you ?

I had a bit of a dig into some approval ratings. I chose Redfield and Wilton Strategies as they appear to consistently show higher results than other pollsters for pro Tory and pro Bluffer. In other words best case scenario for the Bluffer. Here's his approval ratings in more detail: Strongly approve 11%; approve 28%; neither 17%; disapprove 15%; strongly disapprove 27% Overall net -3% Perhaps I'm reading too much into it, but it strikes me that category by category things may be shifting to the right along that approval rating. Quite shocked by the strongly disapprove rating... And 47% think the government is incompetent, compared to 26% who think competent...

I read something the other day and I can't for the life of me find it. It wasn't Politically slanted just an independent piece of psephology which mirrored some of those trends but interestingly pointed out that the fabled red wall had yet to get voters regret. Although his approval ratings had fallen pretty badly he was holding on better in traditional Labour seats than in the blue wall (if there is such a thing). His ratings with his traditional base, the womens institutes and fund raising blue rinse bake mob is through the floor.

That doesn't surprise me to be honest, I think it's the same phenomenon as Brexit regret - too many people just can't bring themselves to change their minds yet. It's still too close...

As a boring centrist type is it any surprise I like stramer 😂
His spike in approval ratings and making labour electable again is nothing short of remarkable. Be interested to see what his actual policies are but I’m sure he’ll get to that nearer an election

There's nothing boring about being a centrist type, although it's often caricatured as such, especially by the more florid types!
In recent times the choice appeared to be between an inept, over-privileged, bumbling Brexit obsessed Bluffer who can't even work out how to stick to his own agreement without breaking the law and a backbench Marxist with an antiSemitism problem and little experience of running anything let alone a country.
The centre ground, more or less, strikes me as the sensible place to be, shorn of the extremes of the headbangers at either end and much more likely to find a pragmatic way which works for more people more of the time.
I hope this is where Starmer is leading his party. The signs are good so far.

I think most people are of the pragmatic, centrist type but the country is going through a period where the headbangers at the extremes seem to hold sway. Hopefully, not for long and the country can get back on track and regain some of the respect and admiration it's undoubtedly pissed up the wall in the last few years.
