Did anyone get to the end of Starmer's big important speech without nodding off? Well who would of believed it The leader of the labour party’s main policy was a suggestion straight out of the daily mail leader column of a new national savings bond Though I’ll give him some credit he’s still persevering with this patriotic flag waving

If you think Israel and China are even remotely comparable in that context you’ve just been completely and hopelessly deranged by ideology or fanaticism or something. “Genocide” smh So what would you describe the treatment of the Palestinians by Israel Maybe I should of used the word apartheid Haha. Not that one either. Incidentally I’ve just realised this is the Starmer/Labour thread. How utterly depressing that it’s completely dominated not by, for example, how he might lead an opposition party to provide a strong and viable alternative to the shambolic UK government of the day (or otherwise), but by obsessing over the actions of one tiny state halfway across the world..... for some reason...

Oh, but it is in modern day politics...flags, roguishly ruffled hair, rambling incoherently and banging on about sunlit uplands are far more convincing to a lot of people than knowing the difference between terrorism and counter-terrorism, how to read numbers, avoiding having the worst death toll in Europe, feeding hungry kids, keeping the UK together and a good relationship with our neighbours... ah, well...I'm fine, so that's all that really matters...

I don't care who thought of it first but I think the idea of British Recovery Bonds is quite good.
I don't know how big the benefits would be and I'm sure the savings that have built up during the pandemic are being used for lending by banks, etc., but anything that helps to recover from the pandemic is worth doing.

Nothing wrong with it in isolation, but surely from the ashes of this pandemic Labour can come up with some (relatively) radical policies around maybe a Green New Deal to tackle the climate emergency and create a new wave of jobs/investment into the UK, or real tangible ways of tackling the crippling inequality in our society?

Starmer is a safe pair of hands and will stop the rot in the Labour party but the bloke has zero charisma unfortunately. He's going to need help from BoJo and friends nearer the next election to have any chance. To be fair this is generally want happens i.e the incumbent government has to make a balls up of governing for enough people to want to rock the boat.

Bringing down inequality and not going back to normal is exactly right. I'm just fascinated how hes going to say how hell bring down inequality without more tax revenue from the most wealthy.

And he cant tackle tax avoidance/ tax patriotism because it will alienate the owners of our Great British press. As well as donors he needs. It's his purple mess. I've got staunch Labour centrists messaging me at how dismal he is. May could be interesting. Especially if the door knockers stay home.

"Erm no I wouldn't go that far" Should we increase Corporation Tax to a level still far lower than some of our G7 partners? "Now is not the time" (Rishi Sunak plans to increase Corporation tax as part of the Covid recovery plan) The Tories are happily filling the space that Starmer is moving towards, they're not being challenged on anything, it's laughable. So in answer to your questions unless Starmer gets his finger out of his fence sitting arse then yes it will be left to the Tories.....

Hes going for the Matt Hancock supporter, flag loving, corporation tax paying purple fence fanatic vote. Basically Matt Hancocks family. Its key to electoral success. So the focus groups say. Allegedly.

But the Tory voters have generally had the consolation of winning on a regular basis So what do you think of the labour leadership interference in the Liverpool mayoral candidate And do you feel that starmer has fulfilled his leadership promises

But the Tory voters have generally had the consolation of winning on a regular basis So what do you think of the labour leadership interference in the Liverpool mayoral candidate And do you feel that starmer has fulfilled his leadership promises I suspect that is what it boils down to, power at any cost... I haven't followed what he's been doing in that contest. I think you'll have to wait some time to see how Labour's electoral fortunes pan out to answer that one! So far he's taken them from 26% behind the Tories to broadly level, until the last month which reflects the success of the vaccine roll out. And moved to put some distance between his Labour Party and the anti-semitism row that so dogged the previous incarnation. But, as I keep saying, England is broadly a right-wing country these days, so any non-right wing politician is going to struggle to appear electable as a result. Throw in ongoing largely sympathetic coverage for Johnson and the Tories by the vast majority of the Press and you get where we are now, despite having the worst death toll in Europe and the biggest economic hit. It seems England has basically made up its mind that right-wing politics is the way forward for the foreseeable future.

Why are labourites always so angry I mean Tories don't get angry at all do they. Not about immigrants or benefits or immigrants on benefits or statues of racists or flags or made up cancel culture or Muslims. They're a pretty chilled lot aren't they, as we see on this messageboard
