How does the Great British energy thing work. Do we produce energy without the need to worry about investors, shareholders etc. If so, how is it priced . Is it priced by the global energy market to which we are a signatory or do we get an exemption. Lets say we get an exemption. How is it distributed to the consumer. Do we set up a supplier to distribute this cheaper energy or do they just sell it to private concerns who then lick their lips and sell it to us consumers at the current higher prices, while raking in even more profits. Just trying to figure out how it would work to benefit us users. My guess is it would be tax payer funded because if it isn't then its not really publicly owned. Maybe just building a load of wind farms and stuff and then whatever energy they produce gets shared out/deducted from our bills? No idea. @wannabe is usually quite good at looking at the detail so maybe he can give us more info on it and how it will benefit the average person or how many years it may take to see return on investment. Firstly Starmer's 6 pledges are illustrative, they are not the Manifesto which will be much more detailed . Also remember Minimum Wage wasn't in Labour's 1997 Manifesto but it didn't stop them implementing it. Lastly Labour hasn't abandoned the £28Bn pledge, it was originally made before Liz Truss crashed the Economy and more than doubled interest rates. I would caution waiting for Manifesto to see what the number will be and crucially when. My best guess is it will be in the region of £8Bn a year rising to £28Bn which mathematicians among us know is a perfect number Regarding Great British Energy GBE it will be modeled on France’s EDF, Germany’s EnBW and Sweden’s Vattenfall It is not a Nationalisation of existing Energy Companies but would be a Government owned Company with operational independence, but with a mandate to invest in clean energy, wind, solar, tidal, nuclear and other emerging technologies. Labour's strategy for GBE is clever in my mind a) they plan to invest in renewable technologies that are already proven and can start making a difference right now, and b) they will invest in emerging, innovative energy technologies. This dual approach aims to balance immediate needs with future advancements. b) is obviously a riskier investment but with risks come rewards but is less likely to happen in the Private Sector although it doesn't preclude Private Investment/Partnership The overall aim is fourfold a) insulate UK from Market Shocks we saw recently but not in other Countries who have Public Energy Companies b) provide UK Energy Security c) meet UK 2030 Climate Change commitments and d) in the future sell excess Energy to return Profits to Treasury For far too long successive Governments have made short term populists decisions to get re-elected. As any household will tell you it may have ambitious plans to increase its wealth and security but it is restrained by its available Budget and it's ability to Borrow and finance that borrowing. Households also know that for long term gain you have to make short term choices of how you spend your Budget. Until UK Inc breaks the cycle of low growth and productivity to create additional headroom to invest in Public Services we will be trapped in a vortex of doing the same thing over and over with predictable results and it doesn't take an Einstein to understand that

Indeed.
Or at the very least, a pledge to end no fault evictions, like the Scots did.
Having said that, I would be delighted to see a commitment to a nationwide plan of council house building, similar to that which we saw under Labour, with their 'Homes for All' policy, immediately after the war. Indeed for many people, it will actually feel like coming out of the other side of a war, after the last 14 years of Tory rule.

He is just so dull and uninspiring. It's as if they know full well they are going to win, but dont want to concede a last minute own goal by actually coming up with anything new and exciting
Sorry to say folks. At least 2 terms of Wishy Washy is not what we need to fix things.
Oh how I wish we had a Maggie Thatcher type PM,one who is passionate about rebuilding and one who commands respect on the World Stage.
Wishy Washy will be the fookin laughing stock, last person on earth I want to go into battle for me.

Prem previous advisor to Jeremy failed to mention neither Jeremy or Diane voted, perhaps they were busy Tim Farron's amendment was grandstanding Water Companies are already subject to criminal sanctions under the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016. They just aren't pursued rigorously enough Farron's Amendment was just a duplication. And what sanction was contained in Farron's Amendment - more FINES It's headline grabbing to insert the word criminal, but misleading but I'd like to see a law where the SANCTION is Gaol Time.

Correct me if I'm wrong. But was a motion not tabled, and possibly voted through in the last few weeks, whereby OFWAT is being advised to prioritise profits and growth when regulating water companies? That sounds like a step in the wrong direction in terms of pursuing them for sewage spillages.

I was being a little playful, should have used one of these 😀 Although I disagree with Farron's Amendment as it adds nothing, fair play to Jim Shannon DUP, a comment I thought I ever likely make. Not quite, OFWAT is being advised to take regard of the Financial well being of Water Companies in considering levying any fines for breaches in Water Pollution if it would be detrimental to its operations Something else I disagree with, I would fine these Bastards a lot and often to hasten their collapse to be taken into Public Ownership

breaking news .... labour manifesto published
Tax his land, tax his wage, Tax his bed in which he lays. Tax his tractor, tax his mule, Teach him taxes is the rule
Tax his cow, tax his goat, Tax his pants, tax his coat. Tax his ties, tax his shirts, Tax his work, tax his dirt
Tax his chew, tax his smoke, Teach him taxes are no joke. Tax his car, tax his grass, Tax the roads he must pass
Tax his food, tax his drink, Tax him if he tries to think. Tax his sodas, tax his beers, If he cries, tax his tears
Tax his bills, tax his gas, Tax his notes, tax his cash. Tax him good and let him know That after taxes, he has no dough
If he hollers, tax him more, Tax him until he's good and sore. Tax his coffin, tax his grave, Tax the sod in which he lays
Put these words upon his tomb, "Taxes drove me to my doom!" And when he's gone, we won't relax, We'll still be after the inheritance tax

Just superb news, I agree with every single word he says and that is from somebody who (regrettably) voted for Starmer to become party leader.

Starmer on Sky just being asked if his National Green Energy will be funded by increased taxation:
Reporter: “how will you fund this”, Starmer: “word salad……Russia” Reporter: “taxation? Starmer: “word salad……Russia” Reporter: “okay, but taxation?” Starmer: “word salad……Russia”
Reporters should not just move on to their next question. It should become a mandatory policy to summarize after each point.
“So, there was Kier Starmer refusing to say if his plans will be funded through increased taxation. Kier, my next question is…”
Democracy needs strong journalists. What would any politician do if the BBC and Sky actually stood up to them? They still have to go on there, there’s literally nowhere else big enough to go.

I’m happy to pay high taxes if it means public services are good. Labour stands for good public services and high taxes, Tory stands for high taxes and shit public services. I know which I prefer

Ive never heard of him.So hes a pro Palestinian,South African born Jew, well thats a start. Son of a holocaust survivor and was instrumental in the fight against apartheid in South Africa before resigning from his party due to corruption. For most people, the biggest issues in this election are what is going on here in our own country. Not what is going on in Palestine. Cost of living crisis, NHS crisis, schools crisis, prisons crisis etc. What is happening in Palestine and Ukraine is awful and our position on it is important. But it is not the be all and end all. Whatever our position, the atrocities will continue. We cannot stop them. Plus I don’t see the problem with an immediate ceasefire agreed by both sides and the immediate release of hostages.
