Digging around the internet a lot of Asian news agencies have reported estimated deaths of over 28,000. Chinese authorities are then altering the figures released to the public.
In an interesting twist, the doctor who alerted everyone was being investigated by a communist team for some reason and then he later died... of the virus ?
Government produced virus that somehow got free ? Biological warfare experiment gone wrong ?
The conspiracies will emerge any day soon 😁

Discussion on the radio yesterday morning saying there won't be a vaccine available until early next year. They will of course be using anything currently available. They still don't have a vaccine for SARS, they can't give any timeline for a vaccine on this. It's brand new and highly infectious, China has lost control of it, it's going global with no reliable stats. We are going to have to wait for a major outbreak in Europe or the US to get any true figures. Sad as it is, the 2 cruise ships are going to give us the best heads up for what we are going to have to deal with. This isn't going to go away! Too much scare mongering on one side, and probably suppression by Chinese local gov't on the other. The death rate is number of dead divided by (dead + recovered), and there's just no way we can trust the numbers coming out of Wuhan. It's tragic and scary, and like you say we're probably weeks away from having a good handle on reality because the cruise ships might be one of the only reliable sources. The good news is that afaik Japan+S Korea+Taiwan currently have no deaths for 100+ infected. No point in panicking right now, just gotta hope the local hospitals are stocking up on masks and respiration equipment.

Yeah, but how are they getting those numbers? I saw the horror stories about the crematoria running round the clock, but that doesn't tell us much about how many people are dying of nCov because people die in Wuhan of other stuff all the time, and they're probably now cremating more than burying for a lot of causes of death.

China has far more cremations anyway as they are rapidly running out of space to bury the dead. A couple of years ago they were pushing to be 100% cremation by 2020. Not sure where the unofficial figures are calculated but you can bet they are nearer the truth than the official death toll.

I just wish all the best to everyone trapped with this, given a few weeks we should have more trustworthy numbers from outside China. Horrible feeling to wait around for this.

Wonderful thing this free movement Yeah although I suppose if we all stayed in the same 2 or 3 fields we were born in and just shagged our near relations we'd end up with some other different medical problems. Plus it would get a bit samey.

My brother has planned a holiday to The Netherlands within a couple of weeks. He's determined to go. The job offer involves a lot of personal close contact with unknown people, hundreds each hour. Service manager. I'm still hesitating.

Plus it would get a bit samey. No that was solved by the invention of the bicycle But the cases currently expanding in Brighton all seem to stem from a business man returning from a trip to Singapore via a ski trip to France Open boarders cannot help in containing the spread of viruses

I think it was because people want to be buried in their home town near their family and it was becoming a problem. They actually tried burying the coffins upright to save space but seemed to have abandoned that plan in favour of cremation for everyone.

Much easier to hide the extent of deaths with cremations As other leaders have done in the past

Current fatality rate for confirmed cases outside of China is approximately 0.2%. If some of the numbers of dead in China being suggested are true I would be very interested to know why the virus appears quite selective in terms of its fatal cases.

I believe they're currently trialing existing anti-retroviral (HIV/Hep b & c) drugs to see how people with the virus respond to those. Edit - tell a lie. Anti-viral drugs: pharmaphorum.com/news/gilead/

A friend in Hong Kong sent me this a few hours ago;
"Well f**k they are evacuating an entire residential building right now. Suspected transmission via contaminated pipes.
It happened during SARS too. An entire residential building got infected because of our old pipe system and our buildings are so dense
There can be like 1000 plus people in one apartment building."
I can't say I understand how dodgy pipes are to blame here, and neither does my friend, but the its happening.

Myself & a work colleague are booked into rooms at the Kents Hill Conference Centre after an event in MK in Mid March, we've had emails this afternoon from the company organising the event (not the Kents Hill itself) to say that they are "talking now to our Head of Health and Safety and Security to find out the advice on what we should do now"!!
I don't know how much the Kents Hill are getting paid to host the poor souls coming back from China but I hope its enough to cover the business for the next 6 to 12 months afterwards as they won't be able to pay people enough to even set a foot through the door there if the UK confirmed cases keep piling up.
I'm fairly relaxed about these sorts of things but I think i'll be making alternative arrangements for the night thank you very much................

It’s alarming but I still think this is being massively over-egged to scare the shit out of people.
Realistically speaking there’s probably well over 100,000 people with it in China, 900 so far are dead which is not overly alarming, I’m sure flu and other viral infections have similar statistics, plus there’s no mention of it striking down healthy and/or young adults, which would be cause for greater concern, it’s likely stricken down the already weak and infirm and the elderly, much like the normal flu does.
SARS was going to kill us all, Foot and Mouth was going to kill us all, Ebola was going to kill us all, MRSA was going to kill us all, and a mere couple of months after the whole apocalyptic tornado worked its way through all possible media channels it completely dissipated into nothing, and we had reported cases of those diseases on our shores as well.
I’d wager there’s a lot more exotic diseases floating around in Britain thanks to the broad range of nationalities that reside here alongside novel coronavirus.
As has been pointed out there has also been only one death outside of China up to this point, which suggests that either it’s not this deadly ender of days that everyone suspects or the population of Wuhan are more susceptible to it, and I suspect if they’re eating bats and snakes from meat markets that look like Newcastle Ironmarket that they don’t have the cleanest environment to live in, which is going to leave you more susceptible.
Doomsday level panic is being created here once again, it’s worth thinking that whilst we do have 8 cases on our shores, they are all contained and we have almost 70 million people in this country, the odds of catching it are akin to Lee Gregory burying a one on one.
They’re also drawing comparison to the flu epidemic of 1914, however this was a time when the average life expectancy was about 12 and everyone ate asbestos for breakfast, as a society now we have evolved to be a lot more resilient.
Cease travel in and out of China until they get a grasp on it and stop fucking scaring people.
