It’s alarming but I still think this is being massively over-egged to scare the shit out of people. Realistically speaking there’s probably well over 100,000 people with it in China, 900 so far are dead which is not overly alarming, I’m sure flu and other viral infections have similar statistics, plus there’s no mention of it striking down healthy and/or young adults, which would be cause for greater concern, it’s likely stricken down the already weak and infirm and the elderly, much like the normal flu does. SARS was going to kill us all, Foot and Mouth was going to kill us all, Ebola was going to kill us all, MRSA was going to kill us all, and a mere couple of months after the whole apocalyptic tornado worked its way through all possible media channels it completely dissipated into nothing, and we had reported cases of those diseases on our shores as well. I’d wager there’s a lot more exotic diseases floating around in Britain thanks to the broad range of nationalities that reside here alongside novel coronavirus. As has been pointed out there has also been only one death outside of China up to this point, which suggests that either it’s not this deadly ender of days that everyone suspects or the population of Wuhan are more susceptible to it, and I suspect if they’re eating bats and snakes from meat markets that look like Newcastle Ironmarket that they don’t have the cleanest environment to live in, which is going to leave you more susceptible. Doomsday level panic is being created here once again, it’s worth thinking that whilst we do have 8 cases on our shores, they are all contained and we have almost 70 million people in this country, the odds of catching it are akin to Lee Gregory burying a one on one. They’re also drawing comparison to the flu epidemic of 1914, however this was a time when the average life expectancy was about 12 and everyone ate asbestos for breakfast, as a society now we have evolved to be a lot more resilient. Cease travel in and out of China until they get a grasp on it and stop fucking scaring people. You raise some interesting but wildly inaccurate points. The concern is the lack of reliable statistics. If you believe the Chinese government figures then there are 43,000 infected of those 2.5% of them are dead, 9.5% of them are cured and 88% are still sick. Until the fates of the 88% are known then we don't have the facts. I think we will have to wait and see the statistics from the 135 confirmed cases on the Princess cruise ship to have a truly accurate picture of the problem. With regards to your other points, there are actually 2 deaths outside of China and there have been for a few days. The 34 year old (whistle blower) Doctor who has died does not fit your old and infirm profile. Your stereotypical view on the Chinese people is miles apart from the realities of a modern Chinese city and is quite frankly borderline racist. Stopping travel from China won't stop the virus from getting here, the so called "super carrier" in Brighton didn't step foot in China and actually caught the virus in Singapore. As to if the virus is contained in the UK is highly debatable considering the latest 2 cases were working GP's who would have come into intimate contact with potentially hundreds of people on a daily basis. The reason that comparisons are being made to the Spanish Flu outbreak is that this is also a new virus. It doesn't matter if you eat asbestos for breakfast or not, the fact is that it is new and we like them have no natural immunity to it. I really do hope that you are right and that it is another media driven scare that will turn into nothing however, this does have all the markers to be a serious drain on an already creaking heath system and having a cautious approach shouldn't be confused with panic or hysteria.

There’s 40,000 cases reported, there’ll be at least three or four times more people that also have it but either have no symptoms or just get a sniffle before it goes so won’t bother seeing a doctor, hence why I think the figure isn’t really a concern. The doctor that died happened to be the doctor who warned of the outbreak, and now he’s mysteriously passed away from this very virus, convenient to say the least, I don’t buy that one for a second, the only other death in that category so far is the 28 year old doctor who literally worked himself to death. I know China itself is a largely clean nation, but the fact that this virus originated at a clearly unhygienic meat market brings into question the hygiene status of the virus at its epicentre, plus with the density it’s a lethal chamber pot to slow cook a pathogen. We also simply don’t know if we have no natural immunity to it, it’s a new strain yes which we know has not been seen before, however coming back to the point previously regarding normal flu, we recognise that strain and it still kills people who have non-existent immune systems, given there has only been two reported deaths outside of China seems to back up that perhaps it’s not this chaotic death bug it’s being made out to be, I’d wager ten times more people than that have died of recognised viral infections over that timeframe. It’s akin to the global panic when Ebola surfaced and that turned out to be what this will be, sensationalism on an industrial scale to sell articles and scare the shit out of people, as if the incessant reporting on terrorism and knife crime stories don’t cause people enough stress about day to day life.

Without getting into too many semantics, there was nothing convenient about the whistle blower doctor dying of the virus, the whole incident has played out very badly for the authorities and they are trying to change the narrative around his discovery from incompetent censorship and control to him being a national hero, the authorities even tried to censor his death. Concentrating on the mortality rate of this virus is missing the point, it does not appear worse than a bad case of flu, however the rapid spread of the virus is causing a catastrophic infrastructure breakdown which is hugely damaging for the Chinese economy. Seeing that China makes a huge percentage of components as well as finished products, the knock on effect is already being felt, for instance Sony has announced that production of some of it's Japanese made products may be halted if the virus affects it's supply chain. If the virus gets hold in London with it's mass transit systems, the hospitals will simply be unable to cope with the numbers, this in turn will cause non virus related deaths due to the system not coping with the sheer number of ill people. "Sorry we can't help you with your heart attack just now, our ambulance drivers are busy".

News on the virus spread has been has been a little calmer these last two days, which is good.
So, do we know why it was named the Corona Virus, and not after Tizer or Vimto?

240 dead and 14,000 new cases in a single day in China. This is just about to get really serious.

240 dead and 14,000 new cases in a single day in China. This is just about to get really serious. The spike is due to a change in how the figures are created, rather than an increase in virulence. On another note, I'd hate to be on that cruise liner just waiting for the virus to get around to me. The Japanese need to get everybody off that ship, not just the old and infirm.

Tokyo Marathon cancelled as Japan sees an increase in numbers with it.
Great Wall marathon in May cancelled already, it's obviously going to be around for a while yet.
Only 5 months until the Olympics in Tokyo, got to be contingency plans being looked into for those, surely ...

No Olympics this time round I reckon. It'll be interesting to see the politics. Japan desperate not to lose billions as hosts. Other countries refusing to compensate.

I wouldn't like to catch this thing, who would, but I haven't seen any figures yet for mortality rates compared to normal flu which people die from also. It is of concern no doubt, but hysteria is the last thing we need.

If I were you I’d make it 2 x heavy duty bin bags, and have them sitting in a separate room and allow them to communicate with the meeting by tapping on the adjoining wall. I suppose Skype or Facetime could be used as an alternative but I’d disinfect my screen or iPad afterwards. People might laugh or mock you, but you can never be too careful.

Yep the supermarkets are packed out with panic buying. Not much meat, bread, water or toilet paper left... It only appears to be getting worse as they cannot locate the source of this spread. My kids schools are closed, all schools and universities in Lombardy are closed same with museums and cinemas and many shops, bars and restaurants.

My kids schools are closed, all schools and universities in Lombardy are closed same with museums and cinemas and many shops, bars and restaurants. Even when infected. Only 1% are fatalXx Between 3 and 4 percent. But another 17 percent are critical. Not justifying the panic but there seems to be a brigade of people just taking an opposing view and pretending it's like getting a sniffle. People with underlying conditions such as auto immune or those with cancer are at serious risk. The panic buying has just made it very difficult now, you can't go about your daily routine. I can't go to work now because the schools closing means I have to look after them.
