I wouldn't be adverse to sending him out on loan to give him game time so he stays fit and healthy, I certainly wouldn't shut the door on him by selling......

I think Smith is alright but £4m, ouch We should get our money back for Lyndsey, we wouldn't for Smith I'd like to think we'd get our money back on Lindsay - but sadly I can't see it. I notice the Sheffield and Huddersfield papers have dismissed Nixon's claims they're interested in even a loan - and Blackburn seem to be trying every other door before pursuing their alleged interest. Sadly, I think he's broadly as unshiftable as some of the others. £2.5m seems a very different number in this summer's market.

I’m reading League 1 standard, £2-3m max ....Jesus wept we’ve got some clowns on here
They’ll probably be the same people who say on other threads that the club always do it on the cheap

Unless he is injured, his absence this week is strange with Collins playing at right back. If he is fit then that feels like MON trying to edge him out. He was awful in the Reading game both defensively and going forward - he never tried to take Charlie, who was playing left midfield, on - and that seems to have made MON's mind up. I suspect he will feel under pressure if he gets into the team so it is probably best for all parties to move on Not having seen the game I can't say categorically that you are wrong, but reading the line up, it seemed to me that we were playing three at the back with Collins on the right side of the three. The highlights which contained a fair sampling of Collins certainly seems to suggest that he was playing in the middle, although with a license to move into some sort of midfield rambling. Or maybe he just took the freedom. There was nothing, however, to suggest he was a fullback. The key for O'Neill in relation to Edwards is to draw a line in the sand and put last season behind, to concentrate on building for the future, so that he is ready when an opportunity comes up (Edwards has accepted that he is second choice). They can both do that. Looking at the messages on here it's much harder for several supporters to similarly draw lines in the sand... Pretty sure it was 4-3-3 as there was no-one to play right wing back in that line up. Ince and Campbell played wither side of Vokes with Oakley-Boothe and Tymon alongside Mikel. Even it was 5-3-2 surely Edwards would have been RWB. It feels like a message to me

Loan doesn’t help and we’d be crazy to sell.
Keep him imo.

He should stay and fight for his place. This season could be a real turning point for him if he gets his head in the game.

MON does look like the kind of manager that once he falls out with a player there is no way back.
Its a shame as I do think Edwards can make it higher in the game if he sorts out a few issues and is coached correctly.
He has clearly been a bit of a lazy arse behind the scenes. Still prefer him to Smith over a season

Loan move surely best for all parties? No point having him sitting on the bench not getting minutes. Loan move to somewhere he’s guaranteed to get games will hopefully see him come back a different player.

If we could get a half decent fee for Edwards (£2m +) he's got to go, his days at Stoke are obviously numbered, MON doesn't rate him and he hasn't improved 1 iota since he made his 1st team debut in fact he's got worse - a lot worse. Gouranga.

The basic need to keep fit to be ready to return and take part in a 9 game relegation battle as a young player having been awarded a long term contract isn’t about management, it’s a about the individuals need to be professional.
Most of us would’ve given our right arms to have been good enough to be in that position to play professional football, let alone for Stoke City, imo.

I don't see why you're making Edwards automatic first choice? "Surely" he is behind Smith, who served O'Neill well towards the end of the season. Others might have been less impressed...others might look for hidden messages that aren't there.,,

Still prefer him to Smith over a season If it was a seasoned pro then probably yes. But O'Neill's public shaming of the player after lockdown is like a yellow card (if it was a red he needn't have said anything) , one which I think Edwards has responded well to. That's the first part. Now he has stay on the straight and narrow while playing second fiddle to Smith. It might take a few games, but the opportunity for a chance to stake his place will come probably sooner than later, as Smith has been very inconsistent. Once it does come, Tom has to play better than ever to stay in the team.

If Tom has genuinely turned a corner, given his head a wobble and given everything to fight back then he should be given another chance along with the rest.

Typical Stoke - get rid of a promising kid, then replace him with some old journeyman who's on twice as much looking for one last paycheck! We never seem to learn, do we? Byrne is 28 Ok older than Edwards but hardly a journeyman Was referring to the Danny Simpson link - Byrne wouldnt be a bad signing, but we are ok for right back in my opinion, and not at the expense of a Stoke lad who has, yes, gone off the rails, but i believe that if he gets his act together and takes his chances if and when they are presented to him, could potentially be our right back for the next decade. We have a great spine of young players here (Tommy, Collins, Tyrese, Sorensen, Bursik, Verlinden) and enough old heads in our club, with the covid fallout and ffp, it surely makes more sense to promote from within than chase around 'experienced' pros when we have that strength in depth right under our noses, if they get that fair try at it.

I like my full backs with a bit of blood and thunder, like Wilko Bardsley Marshy Pejic etc.Johnny Butler had a tackle in him too. Haven't seen that in Tom, his asset is getting down that line and can deliver a pearler at times. Can see both sides of keep or sell.

As the only other right back in the squad (assuming Bauer is not in the frame) it seems strange Edwards didn’t start as Smith played 90 minutes on Saturday and like most other starters wasn’t in the squad on Tuesday. Despite this, the manger chose not to start Edwards preferring Collins a Centre half at right back. Given the manager said the plan in pre-season was to get players who didn’t play much after lockdown up to speed, leaving Edwards out but playing Souttar doesn’t augur well for Edwards.

It looks like we will play 352 at least some of the time (if not first choice system) this season. I think we have options for this down the left but neither Edwards or Smith are suited to this as they don't have the athleticism.
Edwards may well improve but he is unlikely to get quicker. If we have a chance to loan him out we should and bring in a wingback to give us flexibility in which systems we use.
