Thought he did ok on the whole. Made some good runs that weren’t spotted and created two very good chances in the first half. He also should have had a tap in but Powell overhit a simple cut back in the first half. He’d definitely benefit from playing with Fletcher. There is a VERY strong case for STARTING with Fletcher and Afobe in tandem in the next friendly game. If either or both can't last the 90, that doesn't matter - it is a friendly and they can be subbed. But we do need to see what the pair of them can do when played together. I notice others have commented that Campbell doesn't look particularly interested - seeing Fletcher and Afobe start might be the kick up the backside he needs. Another option which probably should be tried at some point is to see whether Afobe, Fletcher and Campbell can work as a front 3 on occasions when we play 433 or 343. First impressions are that Fletcher, as well as being a decent target man and a finisher, also puts himself about well and might be the glue which would allow Campbell and Afobe to flourish together. Time to try a 343 perhaps?

I agree. Fletcher is a very good footballer. I'd like to see Powell in behind both of them.

Second half when he tried to knock it past the defender and go around him and didn’t for a second ever look like he was going to get on to it. pretty much sums Afobe up for me.
He’s crap.

That might be down to a lack of fitness. In the first half he did get behind the defender a couple of times through the centre but on both occasions the ball was too close to the keeper. He also beat his man to get a cross in from the byline on the right of the penalty area. He looked rusty in terms of just straying off side - more game time (and crisper through balls) might well sort that out. I think you are being too hasty in writing him off - he looks like a player who will do well once he is match fit IF we play to his strengths.

Afobe created a couple of good chances for us in the first half through hard work, but he never looked like scoring himself. From when he first played for us he looked quite lethal when he got his goalscoring opportunities, but he needs to get to those first!

There were plenty of times when Powell was in an offensive position v Blackpool and either wanted to much time, picked the wrong pass or simply passed straight to the opposition he was awful today.I really don't know what Thompson has done to be singled out.He was probably the pick of a woeful midfield today.Smith was invisible and McClean and Clucas both underperformed. On the subject of Smith, I thought his performance was weird. As a full back one of his strengths is his attacking play and he always looks happy when he is in the attacking third of the pitch. Yesterday I assumed he would fit easily into the role of a wing back. But most of the time he didn't even look as if he was playing at wing back. So we ended up with a right wing back who didn't attack and a left wing back (McClean) who didn't defend. No wonder we looked disjointed. If both are fit I'd be playing Edwards & Tymon as my wing backs if we use that formation on Tuesday. I think that had a lot to do with McClean playing out of position on the left, it drew Bruno into the left back position which unsettled the back 3 which meant that as Bruno drifted to the left Smith was left to cover the right side of defence more than he should. Basically McClean's inability to keep position fucked up the tactics yesterday and playing Thompson as holding midfielder compounded the issue. Funnily enough if you put all the new signings in, this actually solves the issue for me: Fox- LWB Obi Mikel - holding mid Fletcher - up with Afobe

Not quick, not a lone striker, "can only play in a two", hardly fearless and someone to "put it about", never seen him jump- we can try all the combinations and "give him game time" but for my money clearly"surplus to requirements"

He's basically had 2 good seasons in his career. Did nothing for a couple of seasons before we decided to splurge out on the highest transfer fee he will ever command and then has done pretty much nothing since. Football economics are totally insane ( particularly at good old Stoke it seems ).. it only takes one ( possible two ) good seasons for a striker to become a very rich man! We must hope MoN can work some magic with him I guess.

I don’t see any room for Afobe in the starting 11. Surely Fletcher will start up front with McClean and Campbell either side and Powell in the Mama position.
If we need to change to a more direct shape then Vokes will be the first sub.

I haven't seen anything from him that would lead to me starting him ahead of Campbell in that formation.
And he certainly can't play in a 4-3-3. We've seen that.
So it's still not really clear what the plan is as he enters his final year under contract.
I hear the argument about giving him an audition in the early part of the season just to see if he can get back up to speed, then see what he's got in a front 2.
But can we afford to do that when we need to get off to a good start and we've got Campbell ready to go as one of the brighter prospects in the division, with a minutes-to-goals ratio already in the top 10 last season?

Well you could argue that apart from here Afobe has a better goal ratio. I totally see your point but Afobe does look lively, he has a good record in this division and he hasn't really been given time in a 2 has he. Fletcher up top with him could be an inspirational move, it's worth a try and we have Campbell if it all goes tits up.

It's a very bits-and-pieces record when you look at it. I don't know what led to Kevin Phillips' very odd article where he said he's the type that could single-handedly get you promotion. Phillips must have been the driving force behind the signing, whispering in Rowett's ear. We'll never know how different things would have been (especially for Rowett) had we gone for Gayle instead. It's going to be a tough call for MON. He's basically admitted he's looking miles off the pace. He has been back in full training since May though, featured in virtually all of Bristol City's games, post-lockdown, and had another pre-season here.

Have to say that O'Neill in his post match interview didn't sound very impressed with the players and seemed to suggest he was still not certain on which permutation or pairings at centre half he was set on.. Clearly has targets but is being hamstrung by FFP.

Afobe and Campbell as the two wider players (Campbell is left footed and Afobe right footed - I think - so you'd play them inverted presumably) with Fletcher as a mobile centre forward moving between an advanced and a deeper position. If you want to throw the kitchen sink at the opposition in the later stages 343 is very attacking providing you have the players to make it happen.

If we play with a front 2 they need to work as a partnership - Afobe had a good game first half and Gregory played well second half but there wasn't much interplay. Hopefully we can perm 2 from five that will work as a unit. I thought Fletcher looked really sharp yesterday and was always trying to link up with players around him. Afobe makes some great runs off the shoulder of the defenders but we kept trying to pick him off with long hopeful balls from the back. Those runs could turn out more effective if he's got a player near him like Fletcher who is in a better position to take advantage of his movement. It will be interesting to see how the front line evolves and who establishes themselves in it. For me the player who made the best case was Fletcher, Afobe second, Gregory did ok - apart from the glaring miss - and Campbell wasn't really at the races. But it's early days and it can all change quite quickly as the season ramps up. Campbell is a fantastic finisher. His application worries me. I agree - at the moment I don't think Campbell has the all round game to form a partnership in a front 2 - he doesn't contribute enough off the ball. I think his best option at theoment is as the wildcard in a front 3.

Campbell should start every game, he will get the goals Problem is he’s weak as piss, hasn’t got searing pace, can’t hold the ball up and is blowing after 60 mins. He can finish mind so if he sorts out those issues he will be sound. Just think it’s wrong to place so much expectation on a player who is nowhere near the finished article🤷🏻♂️

Let's get realistic, no-one is the finished article at this level, or very few.

Anyone doing well at this level normally at least gets a move to the Prem, where they usually knock about a bit picking up Prem cash - Vydra being the latest example. Suppose early-career Jordan Rhodes was maybe the most consistent - and he's a bit one-dimensional and has fallen off a cliff Is Dwight Gayle maybe the closest recent guarantee? But having watched Benik for a while now, I'm struggling to see what his above-average attributes are. He doesn't seem to do anything particularly well
