Toby Jones in an ITV (I think) drama about this on this week (again I think) On last night and what with the trailers for it plastered all over the news it'll keep this scandal in everyone's face.

Toby Jones in an ITV (I think) drama about this on this week (again I think) Yeah. He plays a guy named Bates who has apparently refused an OBE, but Vennels since has her CBE.

I find it staggering that the Post Office thought that 700-plus sub-postmasters were committing fraud or theft, over the period, and at no stage thought, 'that seems a lot'.
I also noticed that due to less appeals than expected, they're reducing the compensation pot.

Is there a better actor than Toby Jones?
Don't answer that, there's not.
That pained expression fixed on his face in Mr Burns is classic!

I also noticed that due to less appeals than expected, they're reducing the compensation pot. They knew what the issue was all along. Some people in the PO even knew what the problem was before the Post Office even signed the contract for the new Horizon accounting software. They thought they could get away with running people's lives to deflect attention from a multimillion pound piece of software which was not fit for purpose. Some of the people who led the witchhunt should be facing prison time.

I think that's the actual point ... they DID think that seems a lot but instead of attempting to resolve the actual issue, they instead decided to try to cover the issue up, regardless of the personal collateral damage inflicted by doing so, hence the (scripted and utterly bogus) claim from the helpline, that "it is only you who is having the issue."

Thanks for sharing that Max - a truly shocking read. It is and the senior MPs of the coalition with the post offices brief failing to examine fully the unfurling scandal for fear of it affecting their political careers is almost as bad. Ed Davy, Jo Swinson, Norman Lamb and a raft of junior ministers are named. But the junior minister bit smacks of government paying lip service to the scandal but, in effect, brushing it under the carpet filed as “too difficult".

Yeah. He plays a guy named Bates who has apparently refused an OBE, but Vennels since has her CBE. Why am I not surprised The section in the Private Eye article about Vennels the Vicar really gets your goat. Earning almost half a million a year in salary plus huge bonuses really angers people. My Mrs was inadvertently caught up in the scandal when she worked as a counter assistant at a sub post office a small Devon town. The post master, who was a decent bloke and member of the town cricket team who I played for, started drinking heavily sometimes so drunk he was unable to do his job. There was a discrepancy with the accounts so Post Office sent in its auditors and the post master was suspended with a temp put in place. At this point my Mrs, along with another staff member left, but when she didn’t get a P60 shortly afterwards she contacted HMRC who told her that no NI had been paid for the previous year. This included her and employer contributions. Anyway the Mrs is immaculate in keeping pay records and still had her pay slips stating NI contribution had been taken by the post master so her NI was reinstated. Other members of the staff had the same. It was revealed later that the post master was trying to balance his books in any way he could which eventually drove him to the bottle. His family realising his predicament over the Horizon problems sent him abroad to dry out and out of harms way. Last time I saw him he was a geography teacher at a community college but still fighting the post office for compensation. He apologised to me over the NI non payment saying he was in desperation trying to put his own money in to balance the books.

It's heartbreaking Lawrie but surely the PO must have had issues with the temp as well which were presumably ignored

Yeah. He plays a guy named Bates who has apparently refused an OBE, but Vennels since has her CBE. Why am I not surprised There are moves to have her honour withdrawn, online petition etc. A Labour MP Kevan Jones has made official requests. There's a public enquiry which only finishes in 2025, so nothing would happen before then anyway.

Watched them all overnight, really good cast and well worth watching.
If you've listened to the (also excellent) "The Great Post Office Trial" podcast on BBC Sounds you won't learn anything new, but it's simply scandalous what those poor people went through and very similar to Hillsborough in the way that ordinary decent people were shat on from a great height from the establishment......

I can't recommend the BBC podcast enough, at nearly 5 hours long, some people might find it a bit of a challenge but it is conveniently broken up into small episodes and it really is worth the effort to do them all ... www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/series/m000jf7j?page=1
