Did anyone see the TV programme on this last night, absolutely heartbreaking. When you've got lawyers and MPs fighting back tears discussing this scandal, the biggest miscarriage of justice in British legal history, you get the sheer scale of the case.
I really hope that the Post Office liars, the lying representatives of Fujitsu and whoever the politicians were that were aware of this get their day in court and an appropriate sentence.

Paula Vennells, ex CEO of Post Office, came across as a really arrogant couldn’t give a shit type. She walked away in 2019 with a £5m pay off and a CBE for services to the Post Office. Shorty after her departure she took up a new post as chair of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, appointed as a non-executive director at the Cabinet Office and joined the board of Dunelm and Morrisons. In the meantime hundreds of ex post masters are living in turmoil both financially and mentally. It’s disgusting.

How the fuck was she ever a vicar….mind you apparently god is on the side of Putin in the present Ukraine War so it somehow figures in a perverse way.

I didn't see the programme, but I've read about it and it's heartbreaking.
£millions is still wasted on public sector IT that isn't fit for purpose. I couldn't book an NHS physio appointment the other day because the systems were down, and that's far from an isolated incident (when the systems aren't down, they're very slow). I had to phone back a couple of days later.

I recorded the Panorama programme on it and watched it last night. I recall this happening to those who ran our post office in Dresden years ago. They lived in Alton and were highly respected intelligent people who were well-thought of around here. Then one day, officials from the PO walked in and simply threw them out of the premises. When the reason came out why they'd been thrown out, nobody could believe that they'd been accused of cooking the books. I don't know what happened to them but now its all come out, I'm wondering what happened to them.
This is a travesty of enormous proportions to those who were affected and nothing less than a judge led inquiry is acceptable. As for that woman, Paula Vennells, who was in charge, she deserves (along with others) to go to jail for a long time.
I feel sick at heart for the poor souls who were caught up in this.

I'm pleased she's won her case but how do you compensate someone who, wrongly, has been branded a crook for the past 17 years? And all this for a paltry £1,474. As I said, that Paula Vennells deserves to spend a long time in prison for covering up a problem they knew existed and knowing that decent folk like Gillian paid a terrible price for her wrongdoing. Bastards! OS.

But resigned from the church of England Ethical advisory group, Morrisons and Dunelm non executive directorships, governor of Bedford School, and her main job on the Health care Trust. How many jobs and how much money do these people crave ?

I have heard little of her though since April last year when she resigned from the boards of companies she served for, as well as relinquishing her role as an Anglican minister. How is the matter being dealt with - is there going to be a court case brought against her by a collective of affected sub-postmasters? When is case due to start?

I think you’ll be waiting a long time Shaker. Litigation lawyers helped to bring about the clearing of the names of the sub post masters. As there was money to be made by these lawyers (stated as a fact not criticism) it is unlikely that there will be a clamour for criminal action and don’t hold your breath that the establishment" will bring these criminal charges. Hope I’m wrong though as the despicable Vennells deserves a lengthy prison sentence.

Nowhere near enough considering the trauma these people have endured. Reading this report many who were not imprisoned but lost businesses, livelihoods and their job have been excluded from any payout so far. Also lawyers for the victims appear to be taking a lions share in no win no fee contracts. Surely costs should be awarded to the post office not the victims..

The vast majority of the damages they have been awarded have been swallowed up in legal fees. The Post Office deliberately prolonged the trial in the hope that they would fold, due to running out of funds. It is a national disgrace. It's not the worst cockups we've seen in this country (I can think of two that were worse... the infected blood transfusions of HIV blood imported from the US and the scandal of single mothers having their babies taken from them from 1950 until 1975) but it's an absolute disaster for those involved. And the worst thing of all, those responsible have walked away from the crime scott free. Absolute bastards!

How Paula Vennells sleeps at night is beyond me. The woman encouraged the aggressive prosecution of all these innocent victims and had the audacity to holdout in her job, only handing in her resignation after the courts finally quashed the legal convictions of those she had wronged. An absolute slimeball of a woman.

Three compensation schemes have been set up in the wake of the Post Office scandal. The Post Office, which is state-owned, runs two schemes. One, the Historical Shortfall Scheme (HSS), is for former postmasters who had to cover discrepancies in their businesses' accounts with their own funds, but who were not prosecuted. The other is the Overturned Historical Convictions (OHC) scheme, which provides payments to those who were prosecuted. So far £11.3m has been paid in compensation to 77 of the 83 individuals whose convictions had been overturned, although much of that is in interim payments, and only two cases have been fully settled. A third scheme announced by the government in December last year was set up to compensate the 555 former sub-postmasters who brought the initial legal action, known as the Group Litigation Order (GLO), that culminated in 2019 with a settlement at the High Court, making clear for the first time the scale of the miscarriage of justice that had taken place. Two cases out of the 83 convicted have been settled www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-66221054Presumably Fujitsu are going to be stumping up a fair chunk of the compensation. I wonder whether it's their insurers who are also responsible for delays

Private Eye Post Office ScandalWell worth a read. A bit lengthy but it chimes particularly well with my belief that politicians, at national level at least, are solely in it for themselves. The last page is a perfect example of this.

Just a reminder that Paula Vennells viciously pursued innocent people, despite plenty of evidence that demonstrates she was aware of bugs. www.theguardian.com/business/2023/sep/21/post-office-knew-legal-case-was-likely-to-bankrupt-horizon-it-victim-lawyer-saysDilley said: “I refute using that language. First of all it just doesn’t sound like language I would use, I know myself, it doesn’t sound at all like something I would say. It makes me sound like a Vinnie Jones character from an East End gangster film.” Sounds exactly what Vennells wanted tbh. She didn't step down from her most recent role until she absolutely had to. No shame.
