Lives ruined, decent law abiding individuals jailed including a pregnant woman and a pittance paid out to them by the Post Office.....all down to a flawed IT system, it's scandalous. I listened to a programme on the radio last week which featured a guy who campaigned on their behalf after the lawyers fees and costs between some 557 victims they won't be getting a decent pay off. www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-50806745

Only just herd about this today.
Sounds totally scandalous. If true, people within the Post Office should be prosecuted for false accounting and malicious prosecution.
Sounds like a classic case of “You Can’t Beat Brig Brother.” Absolutely disgusting.

You have to wonder how it wasn't picked up on by somebody, did they genuinely think that a significant number of previously trustworthy postmasters and postmistresses had suddenly started thieving?
Daft twats.

Can't begin to imagine what those wrongly accused went through - you get one life, and theirs was ruined by a computer system going wrong. Impossible to understand how it could happen at all, let alone on such a huge scale. Just dreadful. They should get massive compensation.

Shocking this. Only about 50k each after some spent years in prison. Terrible. It's the press and public apathy about the situation that I can't quite get my head around. I listened to people who'd lost their businesses and many cases this meant losing their houses. People who suffered extreme stress leading to relationship breakdowns. In many cases they were at the centre of village life and were therefore at the centre of village gossip as the local thief. Then there was the small case of trying to get a job against the background of theft from the Post Office. The other point is the Post Office seems to have received very little public outrage in this matter. Any other UK PLC would have been slaughtered....and £50K really is a pisstake on top of destroying people's lives.

Remember it from a few years ago, hard to believe the PO at the time as there were a large number involved, also involved from afar with the PO it has been having an affect on decisions

Post Office scandal: Postmasters celebrate huge victory against convictions www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-54384427Interestingly the article states that the courts may go after Post Office officials who testified that the systems worked whilst being in receipt of emails showing that there were problems.

There was an interesting programme on radio 4 about this a few months back. It focussed on the software system that caused the problem, how it hadn't been properly tested, and how managers wouldn't accept that it could possibly be the IT at fault. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000f5hb

Can you imagine being a Post Office jobsworth, knowing that you are dealing with a faulty piece of accounting software, and giving evidence under oath to a judge and jury in the knowledge that you will be sending an innocent pregnant woman to jail.

What really doesn't make sense is why it's taken so long to reach this point today?. All these ridiculous accusations and prosecutions should have been quashed immediately, in fact none of this should have got out of the starting blocks. Alarm bells should have started ringing from day one.

Convicted Post Office workers have names cleared www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-56859357There's a government enquiry set to report this summer. I'm sure I read somewhere that there are more cases due to come to court. There are still cases of injustice that have yet to be heard. It's got that drip, drip, drip feeling of being kicked into the long grass like so many injustices in this country until finally the real criminals get brought before the court.

I had it my head that the post office was a Ltd company and royal mail was owned by the government. Turns out it's the reverse. Royal mail was floated and sold off and the post office is an Ltd owned the government.
No wonder the payouts are so small. You can't ever expect to get much out the government. Make a mistake on your tax return and expect to get dry fucked to within an inch on of your life... Have your life ruined by a shit IT system while working for a government owned company and you'll get 50 quid and a pack of second class stamps as compensation.

Over £400 fine because I'd "ignored" all previous messages and didn't go to court like I was supposed to. Was some lad from Northamptom with my first/last name and the computers fucked it up somehow and switched the case to me. Luckily I had 13 witnesses+photos+tickets showing I was in Brussels the day of the unpaid train ticket. But if it hadn't been that day I dunno what I would have done, it was some random date 6 months before and I don't remember what I was doing every day. I can't imagine how awful this has been for those hurt - a million times worse.

I'm frankly astounded this woman had the audacity to become a church minister after the misery she caused and possibly willingly participated in. But of course... preaching the will of God whilst also coining it as a non-executive director.
At the very least she needs to have her CBE stripped away with immediate effect. Making her pay back bonuses will be difficult, as she was awarded that money rather than dishonestly taking it. But if she willingly ignored the concerns of those accused then she should be facing either a very hefty fine or prosecution leading to a jail term herself.
Saying that, a CE often takes the rap for mistakes made by her underlings. She needs to support the inquiry by naming those others in her management chain who informed the decisions she made, whether that be the IT Ops Director... Business Process Director... or whatever fancy titles they may have.

Cashing in while preaching fire and brimstone is more or less what religion is all about... Especially Christianity. Unsurprisingly, the government is looking to blame 'nobody'. Ahh of course. Just pay off the victims with a few books of second class stamps and hope it all goes away.

Some of the least "Christian" people I've known have beaten the path to the church door every Sunday without fail to hear and learn absolutely nothing. I wonder what part Fujitsu had in all this? After all it was there faulty, incompetent software that caused this shit. When did they tell Post Office officials that it wasn't fir for purpose?

After all it was there faulty, incompetent software that caused this shit. When did they tell Post Office officials that it wasn't fir for purpose? It doesn't at all surprise me that Fujitsu provided the tech. I used to work at Fujitsu in Kidsgrove. There was always something going wrong with their systems, hence why the IT Help Desk I worked on was inundated with calls. There were also lots of two-faced, underhand snakes working there. I can imagine to protect the contract, Fujitsu and Post Office executives agreed to brush it under the carpet and apply any fixes to the system under stealth to cover their backs. This government inquiry will seek to do the same. It's imperative a proper independent inquiry is launched to fully expose the corruption that ruined so many people's lives. Vennells needs to serve time for what she did, and potentially another executive from either PO or Fujitsu.
