But it's his system and he clearly rates McClean and trusts what he has seen enough to believe that he can do a job; he thinks there is no immediate player that jumps out that he can guarantee is better, that is also currently attainable within our means. A manager lives or dies by his decisions and the results that they bring. Let's give him a chance though. I read it as a thinly veiled dig at the senior management and outgoing TD given his comments about how the recruitment works here last season. I read it as he felt McClean was the best choice out of the options presented to him. You can't say we don't have form for this as Hughes went from Cedric Soares to Glen Johnson. I certainly got the impression it was connected to the TD situation. Who that reflects worst on isn’t clear at the moment. Was the list not up to snuff? Or would the manager not countenance any options outside the British market?

Problem is with managers doing interviews, some feel the need to take every single comment and make some sort of issue out it . We'll have those poised by their keyboards on Saturday desperate for Allen, McClean, Afobe or whoever they can't say a decent thing about waiting for a poor pass or cross so they can get their fill. Sad really that they can't just hope they have a good game rather than told you so etc I really don't like Dwight Gayle but would love him to score goals for us and put all that aside. I really do think one or two on here wouldn't mind seeing Jones fail but we had that with Pulis I don't think any genuine stoke city supporter wants Jones to fail. I'd bet good money that there isnt a single one that wants that. I'm looking forward to him proving beyond all doubt that he isnt the 2nd coming of Alan ball.

100% bullshit I was being deliberately provocative to make a point. You chose to interpret that in whatever way you like but you are wrong. Like I said you prove my point. It's ok though you're one of many I take with a pinch of salt and make this place funny. You're defo making an impact not sure what if any credibility you hold but I enjoy reading. Ah I see sorry you just seemed like a hypocritical arsehole! My bad! Lol wow really!!! Take a closer look at yourself not only wrong but an abusive bully too. Credibility 0 and an angry chap not good characteristics for a forum. You silly 🤡.

For the last fucking time, I'm not waiting for McClean or anyone to fail, quite the opposite ! and to assume, yet again, it's due to him as a person rather than as a footballer is ridiculous. Sick of people (one person in particular) coming out with that comment like criticising a player is a personal thing is stupid.

But it will still ultimately reflect on him, he will be the one who is judged on the McClean scenario. Were it not for Leicester, we would have had James and that would have been down to him, if he really wanted someone else I'm sure we would have tried to get them. I do take your point though.

I've certainly got my own thoughts on that, based on a fair bit of the Hughes regime, and how swiftly we often went from targets that usually ended up at Southampton to freebies, loans and sometimes nobody! I think we have a long history of providing or allowing our manager to provide a very good Plan A target, only to fall back straight to a plan Z option pretty damn quickly in the event of it falling through. It suggests to me that while the process generally worked on the whole, it was sadly lacking in depth.

Some can't but help slate him and keep bringing up last season's stats. Only a couple. I remember when we lost to Palace at home in our promotion season, the abuse some were giving Pulis. We were 4th at the time I think. Baffled by some of the negativity after Saturday he got from some but some just seem to appear when we lose. Really looking forward to Saturday, we'll lose games but a long season

I’m totally behind the manager but something has clearly gone wrong if we’re saying that we haven’t, in the ENTIRE WORLD, managed to source a Plan B to James Justin in one of the absolute key positions and are having to make do with a hard working winger in that role instead. It’s not a million miles away from Pulis playing Shotton on the wing, except in reverse. Haha it is similar granted. But we all saw Shotton have his extended run on the wing and then rightly criticised (Pulis did also have wingers in the squad, he just chose Shotton over them 😂 ).

I think lots of us thought at the time that we should’ve bought a winger instead of spunking all that money on Crouch and Palacios, as our whole set up depended on wingers and we had two quite fragile ones and no real cover.

You’re actually buying we can’t find a left back in the whole of the footballing world? Jesus Christ No, I'm buying the fact that the manager thinks we're OK there. He tried for one, and missed out to a PL club didn't he? And that's not the whole point I'm making. We could have signed a better keeper than Davies. We could have signed a better CH than Lindsay. We could have signed a better CDM than Cousins. We didn't 'need' Tommy Smith. We didn't 'need' Lee Gregory. Need I go on? And I’m not wrong. We haven’t solved any of the big issues we had.

But times are changing, and Jones believes he has a reformed player in him, so we shall have to judge him on what he does now, this season. He's not a winger and he's not an oldfashioned left back. He's something else; what Jones aims to call it I know not, but he's a new tactical invention. The minute he received the ball vs Leicester he was storming forward and in doing that (and that only) he looked promising. Not the finished article, but there's something going on. In an interview during preseason Jones said that we don't play with fullbacks (so that's why he bought two of them?), it'll take some getting used to but we have to try.

I don't think the issue is people thinking McClean won't do a job at left back, I think what is tiresome is to see the same posters repeat it over and over and over again like it strengthens their argument.
We get it, you tied your colours to the mast now let's just shut the fuck up and see what happens eh?

Doing well to be within 2 years of getting it right. My mum still thinks I'm 40 ish, something, less than 50!! When Jones came to the club Edwards was 19. He’s not been with us a full year, so it’s easy to see how he would possibly think he’s still 19. People find any excuse for a moan. He’s 6 months out FFS 😂

I’ve been a bit of a critic of Jones over the summer highlighting the inconsistencies between his message and his moves. If he says we’re going for promotion and Ward is an attacking left back I’ll see how it plays out. If we get promotion then he can be forgiven for his transfers and questionable use of Stoke’s resources. Let’s hope he’s right.

From the sounds of things, because we didn’t bother looking hard enough for a proper one.
