Growing up, Gordon was my hero, the greatest keeper of all time, kept Shilton out of the England team even after his move from Leicester, would have made many many more England appearances had it not been for his accident, feel absolutely gutted, a true England and Stoke City Legend, condolences to all friends and family. Should have been Sir Gordon, what a travesty that this was not done sooner.

Gutting.
As a kid watching football,it's always the ostentatious saves and bits of skill that catch your eye: the myriad stepovers, the last ditch length of the goal diving save etc. So the first time I saw footage of Banksy I thought what's all the fuss about this guy, then you watch some more footy, get wiser to the nuances of the game and start to appreciate that the understated genius between the sticks, rarely needs the histrionics because far more often than not,he's beautifully positioned to just pluck the ball out of the air, catching what seems like everything, next to no parrying for Banksy, making it look simple.
One of the most exquisitely ergonomic keepers to play the game,if not the most, and he had the big hands and lightning reflexes to do all the spectacular stuff when needed in spades,as evidenced by the litany of famous saves.
A profoundly humble and decent human being to boot.
Sincere condolences to the family.
A legendary figure leaving a colossal void in football that will not be filled in my lifetime.
RIP great man.

One of greatest goal keepers of all time. A wonderful, kind, gentle man and a model professional who played for the love of the game. He’ll be greatly missed. RIP.

RIP to football's number 1.
What a name to have had associated with our club.
There's a fella gets in my local down here in Middlesex who I know only to say hello to and briefly discuss/bemoan all things Stoke. He has no connection to Stoke on Trent but is a lifelong Stoke fan simply because of the great man.

Deeply upset to hear the news of Gordon Banks' passing away.
I've been a Stoke fan for 50+ years now, during that time there's been plenty of players I've loved watching wear the red and white stripes. However, there's only two who I consider to be genuine heroes of mine, Gordon Banks is certainly one of them (the other is Jimmy Greenhoff).
I've been lucky to meet both my heroes and neither disappointed me, in fact meeting them simply confirmed to me that they were genuine heroes.
In the case of Banksy he came to do an end of season football presentation for my son's under 12's side. He stayed for the duration of the evening and presented each player with an award. He posed for a photo with each one of the boys and spoke to them individually. Nothing was too much trouble for him.
He then gave a short talk to the team. The gist of it was to always do your best, play for the team, help your team mates out and even when it goes wrong never give up. He told the boys that in one his first games as a youth team player he'd let in 6 goals. He told them that it just made him more determined to become a better goalkeeper. He finished by saying "and do you know what? I never gave up, I worked hard and eventually I helped to win the World Cup for my country. Remember boys, never give up when things go wrong."
Banksy is one of only 11 Englishmen who've been able to say, "I'm a World Cup winner."
We've now lost 5 of the original 11 players. That's one hell of a 5 a side team up in heaven now.
Gordon Banks. England and Stoke City legend, World Cup Winner and my SCFC hero.
Night night God Bless Banksy.

Only got to see him a couple of times in person. 1st time as the bus came through Barlaston. 2nd time when he came to take a look at our school in Newcastle-U-Lyme.

Oh, what devastating, dreadfully sad news for all football fans the world over, and what a heartbreaking loss for the family and for anyone connected to Stoke City, especially those of us who had the enormous privilege of being at the Vic in the 1960s and 1970s and so proudly watching the great Gordon Banks wearing our colours. A gentleman, a genius, a true sporting legend and more than great - simply the greatest. After Gordon, they really did break the mould.
RIP great, great man, we are heartbroken at your passing and not a single one of us will ever forget you.

A wonderful Stokie, a wonderful keeper and a true hero. I was a teenager when he joined Stoke and I had to pinch myself to think that such a great player, respected all over the world, actually turned out week in week out for Stoke City. But most of all he was a wonderful man. I met him just twice at charity events about 20 years ago and he was as approachable and humble a bloke as you could ever hope to meet. It would be nice if all celebrities had half of his humility - but very few do. It remains a mystery as to why he never got a knighthood.
RIP Banksy - and condolences to all his family and close friends.

Because of Gordon Banks.. The reason why for all my life through pain, anguish and occasional exhilaration I follow Stoke City. It was at the age of 6 I persuaded my Dad to take me to my first Stoke game to watch the great man and not looked back since. Very privileged to have meet him- as luck would have it, a school girlfriends Dad grew up with him and I even got to a go to a Stoke game and watch alongside him, which as good as it gets. Later in life at a Sports dinner sat alongside him with Sam Holliday and Phil Shanahan. A true legend. RIP Gordon Banks

I started watching Stoke in 1960 which means I have had the benefit of being able to watch two of the world's greatest ever players: Stan Matthews and Gordon Banks playing for my beloved Stoke City.
I was was lucky enough to meet and chat with Stan and Banksy during and after matches when they had both retired. In both cases it was like talking to an old mate who you had known for years. I don't care if they do or don't have knighthoods. Now, after today's tragic news, they have both passed away but for Stoke fans of all ages they will remain immortal and will always be part of the DNA of Stoke City.

I remember my dad taking me into a room to tell me about his accident. I was a young boy and it was the first time I was inconsolable. I watched his last Stoke games and vividly remember his testimonial. He was a proper hero and the antithesis of the modern day divot footballers. I met him many times as an adult, he was just simply a great person.
