Utterly rediculous signing when we are so deficient all over the rest of the pitch and have to resort to loaning out players to 'competitors' in ths league.

I am always happy for a manager to recruit the plater(s) that he wants. He is then judged on the performances of the player and results of the team.
Player selection is ultimately the responsibility of the manager and he stands of falls upon decisions made.
Where I have an issue is when a team is under server FFP restrictions and the incomings are restricted because of the situation.
We need a balanced squad but to invest so much of what is available on a goalkeeper when we have two other competent goalkeepers (okay one known when he signed) was a) a strange decision and b) borderline negligent when there were gapping gaps within the squad. The same can be said of other loan signings too. Just an opinion and not one because of last nights performance and result.

To be fair, we don't know what % of his wages we're paying?
It may be very low - he is/was their 3rd choice keeper, and they may have been grateful for someone to make any contribution and put him in the shop window for them, rather than see him stuck in their u23s with them paying him 30k+ for the privilege.
There didn't seem to be a queue willing to play him at a good level
If we are paying 10-15k+-a-week as our contribution, I'd certainly be very wary of going ahead with it next year

I do find it bizarre how Davies has been our most consistent keeper and yet is the one being pushed out the door. I guess the long term plan is Gunn for next 2 seasons and then Bursik, so Davies doesn’t fit into the picture. Fits the bill for Scholes' interference in matters, and also fits the consensus that Rowett, and TP before him, had such a problem with the diabolical transfer system we have at the club. 'experts'including Scholes seem to make a list, then of it on to the manager, and that's about the limit of the managers powers. Gunn was being looked at in 2018 ffs, he's been largely poor since then but is 'premiership' isn't he? We don't even need him now, certainly not as no.1, Davies has the right to be completely pissed off with the club by all accounts too! I would be. Bursik is a fine number 2 isn't he with our haphazard approach to selection anyway... This wreeks. We are on such a tight budget, to use up a loan signing when we don't need it on the likes of Matondo and Gunn, then see the likes of signing Chester, and brown for 2m was completely odd... What fucking experts we have. How does it? Gunn was clearly signed for #1 duties and that would have come from the manager.

You can't blame the issues various managers have had with our recruitment policy on MoN . Scholes / carto / Alex from Millwall definitely stick their oar in , which is fine if that improves matters , but it doesn't .

I just don't think its Scholes' fault in this instance. MON clearly wanted a new keeper and we signed Gunn to do that. I don't think it has anything to do with Scholes and Gunn is a good goalkeeper so I have no issue there. I don't think it's anyones fault.

As with so many things at the moment, the criticism of Gunn is way OTT for very little reason other than he isn't Davies or Bursik in reality.
We had one senior goalkeeper when we signed Gunn and not a single one of us knew if Bursik was any good and even those that had seen him during his loan spells or in u23 football did not believe he was a genuine contender for Championship football (or if they did no-one ever said it).
In that sense, the initial signing of Gunn made perfect sense. We couldn't go into the season with Davies, Bursik and Blondie as our 3 keepers and getting Gunn in enabled us to get games into Bursik at Doncaster, which obviously helped his progress as well.
On to Gunn himself, he looked a bit rusty on his debut v Swansea and improved nicely. Prior to injury he had been outstanding at Reading and made one of the best saves you are ever likely to see v Watford before it was cruelly overshadowed by a scandalous refereeing decision in the same passage of play. He was looking really good and then injury struck.
Since returning, I think it's fair to say that despite not doing anything particularly bad, he hasn't looked too comfortable. Another unbelievable finger tip save at Huddersfield was completely ignored for some reason but despite that save and not really doing anything dismal, it's clear to see that he looks sluggish and isn't moving particularly well.
I believe he had a small operation on his ankle to address the injury he had and it doesn't look like he's fully fit or as mobile as he was pre-injury. Those mobility issues caught up with him a bit last night having been visible but not exposed in other games. I don't think he was at fault at all for the opening goal but he should have done better on the disallowed goal and he absolutely should have done better for the 2nd goal last night. His feet just didn't take him to a position where he could spread himself properly and as such, he lunged with his foot because he hadn't got close enough to the ball or striker. He should have done better, been quicker but he wasn't.
Is Gunn a poor keeper? I don't think he is. He was looking really good pre-injury. Should he have come in for Bursik? I think it was the right time for Bursik to step out. He'd had 3 consecutive games where errors, albeit it small ones in some instances, cost us goals so it was fair that another keeper came in. Davies wasn't fit to play so Gunn got the nod. Should Gunn play on Saturday? I don't think he should. Not because I don't like him. Not because I think he's 3rd choice of 3 and not because I think he's rubbish. For me, he shouldn't play because he doesn't look fit. That does neither him or the team any favours. He isn't training daily on the grass, again because he's clearly carrying an injury and for that reason, he shouldn't be playing.
That then leaves the choice between Bursik and Davies for Saturday. Do we give Davies another go or put Bursik back in? I'd probably go Davies as a reward for his performances pre injury and since coming in for Butland. He did really well and his injury was unlucky and untimely, though he himself was at fault for goals in the home game before Swansea and the first goal in the Swansea game.
All things being equal, I have no problem with Gunn as no1 choice. If he's fit and playing as he can do, I would confidently say he's currently the best of the 3. He isn't fit though and that is a problem, as we saw last night.
The manager needs to take some tough decisions. The goalkeeper situation is 1 and if Fletcher isn't fit to play, he needs to do something other than revert to Vokes and Brown up front because neither are a goal threat and we have to completely change the system to have any chance at all of getting anything out of either of them.
4-2-3-1 which we all seem to want isn't viable with Vokes up front. As with Bojan before, where playing with Crouch didn't help him, a good no10 needs mobility around him to make things happen. When he hasn't got it, as he didn't last night with Brown, Tymon and Vokes being hopeless, Powell himself is easily nullified. His own frustration sees him nullify himself.

Davies should be playing. He was brilliant when he was playing regularly, didn't put a foot wrong and he commands his area fantastically. I honestly can't understand how anyone wouldn't say he's our best goalkeeper tbh

Gunn has produced some good performances but there is some evidence of hesitancy in his play.
If Gunn has not fully recovered from an ankle injury then why the hell are we playing him.
If Davies has recovered why are we not giving Davies the return his performances have justified.
If Davies is not fit, although no one in the camp is saying he is unfit, then we have Bursik.
Either way, why the hell would we be persisting with loanee Gunn for next season. Send him back at the end of the season.

Gunn is starting to piss me off to be fair.
When he's barged into the net against Watford he should be dropping the ball and falling over then making vociferously complaining to the ref and liner like any other keeper in the whole world.
But oh no. Not a wimper from him.
Last night there is a player right in his eye line, in an offside position. The ball whistles past the player as he ducks the ball.
What do we get from Gunn? Fuck all. He should be berating the ref and liner. Trying to point it out.
You can get away with shit loads as a keeper. He can't be arsed to do anything.

Andy Cousins will have known him from his Man City days and will have spoken to people in Man City about him. It will have come from there or passed his desk and he would have in depth conversations with MoN about him.

The back four looked confident when they had Davies behind them and Davies was playing very well until the injury, He looks a far better keeper than Gunn and he should be playing.

He didn't have clear sight, take a look at the referee's positioning g. Slow to react for the first rooted to the spot, not great for the second either not needed waste of a loan wage. Rooted to the spot? He dived full length

Gunn as done nothing wrong but some are obviously going to scrutinise every goal. Bursik should have saved a couple he let in, it happens. As was pointed out on the radio, the first goal wouldn't have counted if was VAR as their player was offside in his line of vision but it did and can't change it

Sell Davies and get some ffp gains there. Keep Bursik as number 2 and to play in the cups etc. Happy days. Fuck that if Busik stays he plays. Why damage our players progression for Gunn/Southampton. Sell Davies if he won’t renew on reasonable terms, leave Gunn on the bench if we must, though I’m fairly sure we could get adequate back up cheaper. A fraction of a £10M+ players wages is still too much.
