Under what circumstances would we sign the loan deal for Gunn before the signatures had been put on the Butland deal? Time and believing that the deal sheet for Butland will be ratified by all parties. The loan contract for Gunn was probably ready for our signature hours ago and would have been embargoed (by us) until we had sight of the relevant signatures on the Butland deal sheet faxed to us by Palace. Southampton will have been told weeks ago that any deal for Gunn was contingent on Butland departing. That's the only way deals late on deadline day can proceed - there simply isn't any other way to do it safely.

What makes you think that he’s any good- conceded 44 goals in 23 premier league games. He is 3rd choice at Southampton for a good reason. Who said I thought he was any good? And he isn't third choice, he was first choice and was doing well until the confidence-crushing 9-0 and he got dropped to the bench. Well the fact that McCarthy keeps goal and Forster is on the subs bench by a process of counting makes him 3rd choice. We can’t wait to get rid of a keeper in poor form and replace him with one who is equally useless, and as some have said- Gunn wouldn’t want to come here to sit on the bench- mind you that is a promotion.

Yes he will be, its nothing unusual either. He is no big shot. No player can just expect to walk into this team I'm pretty sure about that. Just like Jack had to wait. Depends on the circumstance though. A player coming from a Prem bench to a Champo club - on loan - is surely going to expect to be playing, at least at some stage, otherwise what's the point? It's totally different to when Jack joined us. What happens if Davies continues his decent form? Are we saying Gunn will just spend the season with us on the bench? I can't see it. I'm not saying he's entitled to the jersey, I just can't believe he won't be starting games very soon, under the circumstances. Gunn has already improved his career prospects. He was No. 3 at Soton, now he's Number 2. It only needs loss of form or injury and he gets the chance to re-establish himself. As he was third choice at Soton, he probably wasn't ON the Prem bench so you could say he was coming from 'not even in the Prem matchday squad to being on a Champo bench'? In which case, he is as near to a first team place as he's been for ages. What's not to like?

Yes ok, you're technically right that he's 3rd choice at the moment but the reasons are not what you're suggesting they are. He was doing well as Saints' #1. The 9-0 knocked the stuffing out of him, he got dropped to the bench and lost confidence. Forster came back from a successful season with Celtic and is a solid, experienced option for the bench, so Saints decided early Gunn needed a loan - seemingly agreed with us a good while ago. So putting a fairly young keeper who was about to go out on loan on the bench would be risky and unnecessary. Just saying "he's 3rd choice for a reason" misrepresents his performances and how much S'hampton value him. But I'll let you off because you've got one of my favourite ever albums as your avatar.

Lots of players could look back a year or so and find their lives and careers have changed in that time. Today is the first day of the rest of their career, where they were months/year ago is history and will count for little from now on. Butland was a Prem goalie 4/5 years ago - counts for little these days?

Looks like Charlton may leave Phillips out of their squad, which is a bit drastic. He's highly-rated though, so looks too good for a No.2 role. Cardiff i think Good call, Chopper...

I just don't think being on the bench at a Champ club represents much of a "chance", when he was #1 and #2 at a Prem club last season. Anyway we'll see. I'll be surprised if he isn't starting league games for us soon.

As much as I am.chuffed for jack, still will hurt a little seeing any player of ours in a different shirt holding shot I don’t understand the warmth for butland, we had what 18 months worth of good performances from him but then post injury he has been an integral part of our downfall all whilst pocketing millions of pounds. I don’t particularly wish him ill but I’m delighted he is out of my club.

Do we need a backup keeper? Yes.
Do we need this keeper, on this wage, on a loan to improve someone elses player? No. Absolutely not.
You can bet your buttholes we let Butland go for a bag of pork scratching too.
Transfer team strikes again.

Butland has gone for an initial £1m with add-ons. Yes it’s nowhere near the £20M+ banded about 2 years ago but 1 his stock has fallen so much over those 2 years and 2 he only has a year left on his contract. It may seem a bit crap but it’s best for all parties it’s finally happened.

Quick google suggests so salaries.eplfixtures.co.uk/football-player/22854.aspxDefinitely good to get jack off the books but it's been managed terribly. Where does it leave Davies, who has done 0 to be dropped and as he *is* our player we should put everything into developing him. Let's say we're paying Gunn half that touted wage, 20k to sit on the bench seems a bit mental no?
