In his first season Hughes had 13 wins, 11 draws, 14 losses.
In his second season he had 15 wins, 9 draws, 14 losses.
In his third season he had 14 wins, 9 draws, 15 losses.
In his fourth season he had 11 wins, 11 draws 16 losses.
Leaving aside the quality of the performances, the stats show a minor decline in results but in the main a significant level of consistency.
In Hughes's second season we conceded 45 goals. Mr Defence himself only bettered that once (in 2012/13 - though we did score 16 goals less than in 2014/15 managing it).
We've conceded 20 in 9 games already this season Geoff.
Jeez Dave loving your posts tonight....
That's exactly the problem Dave, people want to pick the good parts out and ignore the full picture, how many times did we get stuffed by four or more, there's losing and there's losing but having a bit of pride
I agree, but I know you like the manager to dumb down expectations rather than the board.
Thought you'd be along to stick your neb in. We vastly exceeded expectations under the last manager when we were languishing in the relegation zone of league one.
Pulis wasn’t manager in League One.
He also lost the plot in his last two seasons just like Hughes has, yet you thought it was a travesty when he went, exactly what you’re accusing others of.
If we cast our minds back to the final season of Tony Pulis, Coates at no stage came out and backed him, not one word do I recall.
It seems to me Coates wants Hughes to turn this round and certainly doesn't want to sack him mid season, what happens in the summer would then depend on the final league position of the club.

Of course he doesn't want to sack him
1. He'll have to pay him off 2. He'll have to pay any half decent replacement more money 3. He might have to pay compensation to another club 4. Any new boss will want decent money to spend

There's a common theme...
That's right our owners like having a Premier League club but don't want to spend Premier League money.

He pushed us to the limit on that one. It took a few thousand people who desperately want to attend Stoke's home games cutting off their nose to spite their face to get rid of the toxic twat.
I for one can't do it again. Difference is I'm retired and I'd die of boredom in Winter if it wasn't for football. Unless I fuck off abroad which is an option.
Relegation will cost him far more than replacing the manager and "ancillary costs" should we struggle to regain our Prem status at the first or second attempt. Looking at the team/squad that would be left in the Championship I think it could be a lengthy period of consolidation and rebuild before we were able to mount a promotion challenge.

Spot on which makes it all the more baffling that Hughes was not sacked in the summer, if Coates thinks he could bring us back up after he relegates us he is most certainly deluded, the squad is so unbalanced and unmotivated it is scary.

You're not joking we jointly hold the record low for points gained for automatic promotion to the Premier League. With our risk adverse attitude we'd be very very lucky to regain our status if we were relegated.
Of course Coates doesn't want to sack Hughes, there isn't a manager available with a better record. He has the support of the players and a fews points from the top half of the table.

”He has the support of the players” I suggest results and performances say otherwise.
Wenger and Hughes both did, last season. They might well do it again, Hughes if he lives up to Coates' expectations, and Wenger if he so chooses himself.
The fans haven't fully turned on Wenger. Some have, some haven't. The minute he starts getting large scale barracking at games it'll be over.
Same with Hughes. There was frustration last season but it never quite became universally poisonous. Things are rapidly getting there though unfortunately.
Not with the support he still has and will continue to have.
Oh and Pulis wasn't sacked because of the fans turning against him, though that they did. His contract was not renewed because he opposed the Coates family's new management structure masterplan.

If he didn't we would be sure to know. Stories would be leaked to the press, poor discipline would show itself on the pitch and in training ground accidents, results would be far worse.
What results and performances say is that players are bereft of confidence.
You can get too lost in statistics, it's a well known fact. The evidence that things aren't right has been apparent on the pitch for around a year and a half. The transfer malaise with our most expensive acquisitions is clearly a big problem. Some think Joe Allen is the exception that proves the rule and Shaquiri was a definite bargain ( tendency to injury aside ), however we appear to be very poor at getting in players that aren't 'dogs home' material......in fact even Shaq could be said to fall within that category.
Hard to see how the board don't see this......something has to change soon or we are in serious danger of meekly disappearing from the Premier League.
“All paths are the same: they lead nowhere. ... Does this path have a heart? If it does, the path is good; if it doesn't, it is of no use. Both paths lead nowhere; but one has a heart, the other doesn't. One makes for a joyful journey; as long as you follow it, you are one with it. The other will make you curse your life. One makes you strong; the other weakens you.”

Or maybe they’re just short of managerial motivation and tactics

Not a wise thing to do, you might say.
That was part of it too but if he’d retained the support of the crowd that wouldn’t have made a difference. The Villa match sealed his fate as much as anything.

Don't let facts get in the way of open discussion, two seasons? The reign of TP went down like an areoplane without fuel from January of his last season. Without doubt something went on behind the scenes which ended the PC/TP love affair. No one without inside knowledge will ever be in a position to say what the issue was
Another Percy article about Hughes (and Pulis). Nothing really new. Just talks about fans' frustrations and has a copy of the quotes from the press conference this morning.
