If I were PM, I’d introduce a law prohibiting ministers from being appointed without sufficient expertise and experience in their field. No more career politicians. No more PPE graduates from Oxford. A former teacher as education secretary A former doctor or nurse as health sec Economist as chancellor Diplomat as foreign sec Lawyer as justice sec Ex-military as defence Police or some sort of security officer or border force or immigration lawyer as home sec I bet that would help make a better government. Gove is one of the most hated education and justice ministers ever by people in those fields. Why did he ever have those jobs when he knows nothing about the areas? It doesn’t always work of course - Suella Braverman was an appalling Attorney General proven by the fact her legal analysis was often so wrong in the face of judicial reviews of government laws and policy (usually because she ignored the government lawyers advising her otherwise). It's a tough one that. I think you might struggle to find enough people with the knowledge and experience necessary. The people who really know what's going on are the civil servants, they're the ones who've often been in the role for years and know how government works and where spending will or won't make a difference. Unfortunately, the politicians often seem to ignore their advice because it doesn't suit their political agenda, or those of the people they need to have on side, such as the press barons. With the consequences we've seen over the last seven years or so. It would mean different people going into politics. Interestingly career politicians is much more a tory issue than any other party

The SNP had this in fairness to a degree - Joanna Cherry is in the top 10 or 20 QC's in the world and was their legal person until she was too much threat to Sturgeon/ overly vocal on the legal and safeguarding pitfalls of folk with cocks just being able to state they're women. The health spokeswoman is brilliant too and if it was my constituency would vote for her without second thought. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philippa_WhitfordOn the otherhand the career politician who is minister for health up here is fucking wank but allows us to pat ourselves on the back for diversity. He genuinely went to the press, he was previously justice secratery, about a nursery not taking his kid in on race grounds and whilst it was still being investigated by the nursery on the very same day record drug deaths were announced on his watch. www.thescottishsun.co.uk/news/politics/8120908/humza-yousaf-nursery-row-report-revealed/

I know turkeys won’t vote for Christmas but the Tory party is in complete disarray right now.
The best case scenario for us the voters would be for a general election to be called which Labour will obviously win thanks to the current shitshow.
The Tories need to go back to the drawing board whilst they’re out of power and try and come up with a united front instead of all these different factions like the ERG and such nonsense.

The most sensible post of this thread. I’ve said this for years how can a minister one day be Secretary of State for Education and the next day be a competent Chancellor or Home Secretary. Kwateng was a great example Secretary of State for Energy then a completely incompetent Chancellor. Think the last PM not to be a product of upper echelons of education was Jim Callaghan wasn’t he?

It really is looking like Rishi and Johnson will be on the paper, you then put it to the old nutters completely out of touch and we know who they’ll go for. In a deepening economic crisis Rishi predicted the crash yet somehow isn’t the people’s choice (from the list) it’s crazy stuff.

They wanted Liz and look how that turned out. There's no way they'll have learnt from their previous buffoonery, as that Private Eye pisstake correctly points out.

Absolutely agree Oggy. I agree in principle bearing in mind, you can have a qualified doctor, economist or lawyer who is crap at their job. It's true that these career politicians just hop into specialist areas without any evidence of qualification or knowledge. I don't think there is any other industry, or organisation that works like this?

Agree. And to add to that I feel as a country we really need a technology minister of some sort too. I think one thing a lot of governments are lacking is someone from a technology background with expertise in the area which can bring the country into the 21st century and digitalise different processes. As well as focusing on automation, security and all the other areas. One thing the UK, and world, is crying out for is a technology tax. Far too many jobs being automated these days and putting people out of jobs for the companies to then just take greater profits which go straight to the top. Everyone should benefit from technology and automation which make our lives easier. But unfortunately as can be seen in companies like uber and amazon, the big bosses use it for exploitation. And for things to properly change you really need someone in government with a strong It background and understanding of technology. Not a load of boomers talking about "algorithms" without the feintest idea of how it all works.
