Why would he need professional advice? He knew exactly what he was doing asking for the bonus early and he knew exactly what he was going to do once he received it. He's a 58 year old professional man, not some wet behind the ears teenager. If he had any sense he'd have taken legal advice. As you say he knew exactly what he was going to do and he knew the bonus wasn't yet due and by the time it was he would have resigned. Clearly stupid and arrogant to imagine Palace would not come after him for it.

Exactly, he's a professional man so should have known to seek appropriate advise to see would early payment of the bonus be in breach of the terms of his contract. If he'd spent a few quid on proper advise he'd still be sitting on north of a two mil cash pile!!!! He didn't need any advice. He'd told Parrish on 8th August that he was happy and would still be in charge on August 31st. He knew that was when he was legally entitled to his bonus, tried to pull a fast one and has paid a heavy price. I'm not sure why you say he didn't need advice. I agree he knew the facts but had he taken advice on the likely outcome of his intended action he may then have taken a more sensible course of action. Stupid bull headed arrogant.

Oh dear.

I'd imagine a certain Mr Scally of Gillingham will be breaking open a big bottle of champers when he reads this judgement. I have to say that (even though I was a Pulis supporter until the last few months of his time with us) this case leaves a rather nasty taste in the mouth. I think that, if I were in TP's shoes and had wanted to terminate my contract early, I would have accepted that, either I would lose the bonus or, at the very least, I would have honoured my contract until such time as I actually became entitled to the bonus. It does seem that the more some people have the more greedy they get. TP gets an annual salary which is beyond anything which his father could have dreamed of earning in his lifetime and to adopt devious means to try to swindle a £2 million bonus (to which he was not entitled) out of Crystal Palace really is depressingly greedy and mean spirited. I really can't believe anyone is surprised or disappointed about this.

Having read the transcript it seems that TP was his usual arrogant self. CPFC seemed to be fairly reasonable in their dealings with TP offering to assist him in recovering the tax & NI, or deferring this part of the disputed amount for later consideration so as to help TP with his cash flow. This offer was "rejected thunderously" ....now, there's a surprise. So, TP is left with a substantial liability. 2.2MM in bonus plus 1.5MM LD's plus potential costs which I imagine will not be cheap. A costly day in court.

wow i am genuinely surprise by the level of hatred on here for our former manager. i am not saying he is an angel but crystal palace and their chairmen have allways been odious little cunts.my only surprise is he aggreed to work their in the first place.when he went there palace where odds on for relegation so was surely due a hefty bonus for keeping them up.i do not understand why there is a date attached to the bonus[aug 31st] surely the bonus should have been due at the end of the season. i am really saddened by some of the words used to describe mr pulis on this mb. we have a lot to thank him for, people have short memories. i doubt we have heard the last of this case.

Very lucid as to what he did and how it all ended. And towelgate....

Completely agree. It's sad the bitterness and jealousy that many have against one of the most successful managers in our history. I don't understand the clause either. It should have been at the end of the season or to keep them up for 2 seasons. Making him stay until the end of August if he really wanted to move would have been a hindrance to Palace.

Don't read the court judgement it will probably make you cry then. This was an appeal it's over,he lost and for the second time after the Gillingham court case, a high court judge sheds serious doubt on the ability of the capped one to distinguish between fact and fiction.

Despite what people thought of him as a football manager, you have to be a bit thankful that Pulis' relationship with PC was so good that this nasty business never tarnished our club or TP's time with us. That'd be a real shame. I agree with that, and it shows just how incredibly fortunate we are to have Peter Coates as chairman of Stoke City. The long term stability and commitment he has brought should never be underestimated. In fact, he's way too smart to let someone the likes of Pulis take advantage of him and our club. Coates is not interested in fame, showbiz, yachts or private jets - just our club. And Bet365 pays all its taxes in the UK, unlike many Premier League club owners. We are very fortunate indeed.

Ah well I guess after 4 years away from us some just can't get him out of their head, The point you're missing is that he's a crook and a proven liar. He's proved it at all the clubs he's been to some extent or other and he may well end up being grateful that two of the cases he's been involved in didn't involve criminal charges for fraud and blackmail. Some of us have longer memories than you and also remember the way he tried to screw over Stoke City in his first stint in charge. He may have got results for us and he's obviously perfectly capable of doing that for most clubs, but it doesn't hide the fact that he's a crook.

I wonder what the opinion would've been had it been Pardew, Mourinho, Wenger, Rodgers or Klopp caught out doing this?

I think I'd be pulling a sickie if I was a WBA player today , there's going to be some running and lots and los of hills !
For what it's worth I'll take my lead from the leaders Mr Coates clearly thinks in the round the relationship was mutually beneficial and is grateful for the efforts of TP , personally I could fall out with him every day but a bloke who drives through the night to manage our team on the day his mother died doesn't deserve some of the bile on here .
its like a divorce the quicker you see the person for what you originally liked or respected the better for all parties don't let the acrimony of the end destroy the good things that went before .

We don't know what the 'leaders' really think of Pulis. My guess would be that they viewed him as a good manager who couldn't be trusted as far as they could throw him. In fact I'm amazed that anybody could really see Pulis any other way. As for the thing about his mum, about as relevant as his charity bike ride. It's like those neighbours of Fred West telling the media that he helped them put up some shelves once. Never mind the bodies buried in the garden, look at the space I've got to keep my thimble collection. I hope West Brom have their contract terms with him sewn up very tightly and are keeping an eye on him.

Quite correct. He did a great job for us, no matter what his character. You'll go a long way to find saints in football. (Ian St John? ) True. I hear there's a youth coach out of work at the moment who could do a job for us once he's out of hospital. Straight out of the Eric Bristow school of social media conduct that comment youth! If we're dealing in proven facts (I know, a rarity on this messageboard and alien concept to some), then TP has been caught bang to rights by this latest judgement and can have absolutely zero complaints in now having to repay the money obtained fraudulently. His reputation in football forever tarnished, and only himself to blame. But the facts are also: There is no proof of any crooked / fraudulent activity during his time at Stoke (disagreeing with footballing methods doesn't count sadly!), he and Coates had a good working relationship (both TP and PC have gone on record stating that as fact), and it was clear to almost all that we parted company with him at the correct time for all concerned. To compare him to a convicted sexual predator who preyed upon young boys (however ironic you were being), just makes you look petty and bitter. We get it, you didn't like Pulis at Stoke, he did well for us, made you look a tit, move on.

The reason for the date is obvious. Palace didn't want a quick fix just to keep them in the league, they were protecting the club by basically saying we'll give you the money to buy players in January to try and keep us up and Pulis a bonus to keep them up as long as he sticks around the following season to consolidate them. They were probably worried that if he did the miracle and kept them up another club would come sniffing for his services and they would have to start all over again.
