Football is an easy game; 1 Defend deep 2 Ignore possession 3 Concentrate on set pieces 4 And boot the ball as far down the pitch as you can at every single opportunity. It has worked beautifully for Leicester this season. Well I justed watched Leicester and what they do is defend properly, attack with more than one player with pace, and if they lose the ball all work to get it back.Simple game football,I think your been a bit harsh with No4. So you would rather watch tippy tappy 60% possession no shots on target football.

So cards on the table, would you get rid? Right now I would, however it is not up to me the Coates family will be taking that decision, they sacked Pulis for failure to achieve what they expected, would they do the same to Hughes ? most business operators are ruthless people which is why they are in the position they are in, in any business you are only as good as your last result. So does credit in the bank not count? Do you sack your manager at the first sign of trouble, regardless of what he's delivered?

My natural inclination is toward quick paced short passing, but at the same time, I absolutely loved the Macari years.
Basically, I suppose I just want attacking intent. I never want to go back to watching turgid negative shit.

It depends what you mean by 'now'. Does the fact that things are shit now wipe out the last two seasons, when we finished higher than our 'competitive' team ever finished? My theory is half of Pulis' players were still here and being used, last summer saw the major changes take place and now Hughes has his own choice of players having had 3 years to build his own squad, where is he going with it? what are we trying to achieve? i'm of the belief Hughes has an imbalance in the squad of 'footballers' and players with that 'DNA' we used to look for in players, hence the reason I keep on about british based players and getting some steel in So just so we're clear, you're giving Pulis the credit for Hughes' success? Why couldn't his own teams finish higher in the league than Hughes managed?

its how I feel about Leicester
I fuckin loathe them BUT they have made mugs of all 19 other teams this season with their back to basics approach
The new Wimbledon
(still pissed of though how many blatant decisions went their way though)

I see what you are saying but it's just my belief that in a competitive league you need a competitive team. It was our physical aspect, team ethic, organisation at set pieces and in play (for the most part) that give us an edge under Pulis, I fail to see what our edge is now that gets the best from this group? It depends what you mean by 'now'. Does the fact that things are shit now wipe out the last two seasons, when we finished higher than our 'competitive' team ever finished? Our competitive team was steadily bringing more and more success. First we had to stave off relegation to the 3rd Division. We then established ourselves as a secure Championship club. Then we had to suffer one awful year with an unsuited manager and his tip tap crap. Then we had a run for the play-offs before securing automatic promotion with our competitive team. In spite of being favourites for relegation, we established ourselves as a Prem team in spite of the tip tap artistes from Smethwick getting the fate they deserved. Slowly we improved. Then we reached our very first FA Cup Final after well over a century of trying. Then we had our best ever European campaign. Then we were up to 8th half-way through the season before something happened that no one has ever explained and we had a third of a season of decline, which had been turned round by the end. And the manager was dismissed. He wasn't given any more chances, he was gone. He had wasted money and we had declined. We are experiencing an horrific end of season - of the scale of that 1/3 of a season of decline and £40M has been thrown away. The last chap who had such a horror story was rewarded with a severance package. Why would it be any different this time?

Boom. The question that never gets answered. Because of Pulis' mentality which is his own downfall Exactly. And the mentality of the manager runs right the way through a team, for better and for worse. Hughes gets 100% of the credit for the good and 100% of the blame for the bad.

Quite. 10 years of unparalleled, historic success and sacked after a 4 month poor run of form. If we use your arguments here, mate, then LMH should be packing his bags already.

I don't prefer any type of game. I want us to play positive football it's not a matter of either a passing game or a long ball game, it's about playing the right ball.
I don't think Hughes has got it right this season part of it is again down to injuries (I think our form has dipped since Johnson got injured) but part of it is down to Hughes. I think Diouf should have been our main striker (I understand the affect the death of his mother had) but Hughes hasn't really given any striker a prolonged spell in the team. The failure to secure a backup winger was a big cock up as was with hindsight a top quality centre half.

What makes Leicester so good playing direct football and what makes Barca so good at tika taka?
Pace, tempo and quick changeovers.
Barca play it through the pitch and Leicester play it a bit longer. Neither way is right or wrong but both have that common link.
Do we have pace? Do we play with tempo and are we capable of lightning quick changeovers?
Yes there are smaller side shows like centre halves or a finisher etc but the bigger question at any club is the underlying ethos of it's football. We have a half and half squad.

Not that I expected anything different. During our 'best ever European campaign' we won four times in the league after Christmas and were the lowest scorers in all four competitions. We finished with in our lowest Premier League position. We were 8th at Christmas but we hadn't been playing well, still couldn't score and the falling apart after Christmas was his fault, nobody else's. Nobody made him pick that team, nobody made him avoid picking the team that smashed Liverpool. He brought in 14 players over his last four windows and no more than 3 at most became regulars. He was given a season's grace, rightly, because of his credit in the bank and he blew it and was rightly sacked. The team has reached greater heights in the league since.

To be fair, you can tell the difference between a punt up the field in the general direction of some big bloke, and the sort of passes that Hoddle used to excell at. At the same time, the media did tend to jump on us for doing things that other teams did without any drawing any attention - like the stuff that goes on at corners.

At the moment it seems to be playing tip tap crap with TP's ageing signings who were brought in to play a different style.

I agree, I don't think we'll end up in a relegation battle but we've lacked in a lot of areas this season and it has to improve, he's not getting the best out of his group of players which according to a lot are the best group of players we have ever had. If we were superior in another area of play you could excuse being poor at set pieces at both ends but we arn't superior in any other area of play other than posession

TP was sacked for a spell of decline that was 4 months long. He was sacked for wasting money. He was sacked for a derisory style of football. And he had 10 years of credit in the bank. LMH has 2 years credit and he is guilty of exactly the same as TP. He will suffer the same fate.

Interesting you don't set the same store in that though. Pulis was sacked for a dreadful last 18 months and for wasting a f**kton of money to dismantle the fine side he himself had built. Europe was great (until he threw the towel in) but he didn't change the side up enough in the league and we scraped through the end of the season devoid of ideas. He ran certain players into the ground and didn't use others and people slowly got fed up of it.

Don't want to advocate thuggish tactics but its that crunch we seem to miss
One of the things I like about long ball is the old big man/little man striker set up, the big 'un flicking it on etc and tussling with the CB
Call me old fashioned but I liked it, same as I still like my CDs and DVDS (Took years to persuade me to throw out my VHS)
