64-4, Root gone. Big trouble. We are. So on the three more English pitches we win. And the two flatter pitches we struggles (Lords and the Oval). Is there a case to take Test cricket away from the London grounds - Old Trafford and Headingly to replace them?

..and Butler's dreadful form continues.
At least if Stokes and Moeen can get going they'll be fireworks.

This really has been a poor series for the neutral. Every match has been so one sided it's been frankly quite boring.

If we have to bat again, put Lyth in at No. 11.

This is shambolic batting. Following on before the end of play at this rate.

It's the dog shit series.
Fortunately Australia have been dog shit three times to our two.

If we have to bat again, put Lyth in at No. 11. If we have to bat again tonight Lyth would have a rare opportunity to join Graham Gooch as an opening bat dismissed twice in a day. Anyone remember when Goochie managed it?

I read that the weather still might play its part in this match. Hopefully the follow-on will be enforced and The Baggy Greens can restore some pride before the rebuilding programme begins in ernest.

It will be the first time ever that Clarke has enforced the follow on. Personally, I'm 'old school', and would enforce the follow-on in most circumstances.

I read that the weather still might play its part in this match. Hopefully the follow-on will be enforced and The Baggy Greens can restore some pride before the rebuilding programme begins in ernest. Later today (maybe tomorrow) when the muted coordinated celebrations are underway I'm sure the Aussie team, management and supporters will be wondering "why did we hand the Ashes" to England?" For England a second thrashing of the series should be cause enough to reflect on how much work us to be done. Because, this side is a long way from being even half decent. All three English wins had Australia's helping hand on the tiller - specifically in the batting; complacent at Cardiff, negligent at Edgbaston and Trent Bridge. It's obviously great to win the Ashes, but this series has none of the winning feeling that accompanied the 2005 and 2010/11 series wins when the England teams played consistently excellent cricket against strong opponents. This series has been like two bald men fighting over a comb - we've grabbed it three times, you lot twice. But we're both still bald!

Unless Ali and Wood bat out the morning session - which isn't likely! I'm relaxed about the "modern" way about not enforcing the follow on. It seems to work - as long as you bat with serious intent. A quick 200 or so off 40-50 overs. Which is what Australia tend to do. Not like we've been at times in the recent past.

RIP Arthur Morris Died over night aged 93
One of the very best openers to play for Australia. Probably best remembered by English supporters as being at the other end when The Don scored a duck in his last test innings - at the Oval.

3 minutes and 2 balls after my previous post, Wood and Ali gone. Australia enforce the follow on, Johnson on hat-trick ball in the second innings.

Ok - some "proper" test cricket coming up.
No terrors in the pitch. Blue sky above. Third day pitch. Perfect for batting. But the pressure is on. The Aussie bowlers are confident, our batsmen, how can I put it..., aren't.
Let's please show some fight. Some application.

If we have to bat again, put Lyth in at No. 11. Forget the above, batting at No. 11 would be too high for him.

We seem to be paying for sitting back on the "don't change a winning team" philosophy.
Lyth and Buttler's averages added together are still less the Ballance's for this series!

5 wickets down - the only question is will we make it to a 4th day. Unlikely you'd have to say. But it would be great if Butler can hang round with Cook and post a decent score.
The top 5 of both teams has been a mess this series. Only two from each side look like test players; Warner and Smith and Cook and Root. Big thinking for each team on what to do going forward. Both teams also gave something to think about for the all rounder spot and the wicketkeeper. Neither side has had consistent quality from these positions through the series.

Well - I sort of got my wishes. Cook posted a decent score, but, probably, not good enough. And Butler has hung around. He has class - but he needs runs. Hopefully this is the start of some form for him.
Let's see what tomorrow brings.

At test lasting 4 days? Wow!
Weather forecast for London is rain from around lunch time on Sunday through all of Monday. If we can bat a couple of hours we could steal a draw.

A quick summary of the test to date - from an Australian perspective:
A step towards resurrection for the Baggy Greens after an inconsistent Ashes series performance If Mitch Marsh can continue his development in international cricket then we have the makings of a one very good all rounder. Siddle, as always, gave his all and was superb. It could be his last test for Australia, that is, if the young quicks can hold their bodies together. Rod Marsh's position as head selector on this tour must surely come under scrutiny. This team should have played in the fourth test. Smith and Warner have the tools to become the core of the on field management team for many years to come. Smith has clearly worked hard at improving his death shuffle across to the off stump. This match has him now mostly locked in to English conditions - too late, but experience he couldn't buy. Warner, likewise, has stopped chasing the ball and has benefited with an improved first innings performance. Watson has now been consigned to the bench as a squad player. A great pity for a man blessed with enormous talent. The Duke ball has played a significant role in taming what was going to be a dominant series for Australia, as have the sideways moving pitches. Not to put too strong an emphasis on the ball, but it went a long way to emasculating the batting line up. Perhaps the ACB will consider changing the Kookaburra for the Duke. The chase to replace Rogers continues. We have a number of likely candidates in the 'A' side so there shouldn't be any panic. We have a sound 'keeper as Hadds replacement. Rod Marsh and Boof will have to face the music when they get back into Sydney regarding their treatment of Haddin. It was shabby to say the least. Hopefully Clarke will retire as a winner. He didn't win a series in England but he should go out with his head held high.... and he did enforce the follow on for the first time in his last test. In the end it could be that rain that might spoil his party.
To end, will someone please provide Warne with a bottle or two of Valium. He's beginning to bleat like Boycott, only he's louder and has a more irritating, whining quality to his voice. To make matters worse he's also beginning to repeat the message. I'd like to swap him for Sir Ian in the Channel 9 broadcasts, at least he makes sense most of the time.
