Brad Haddin's left the tour for family reasons, hope he's ok. Particularly if it's to do with his daughter. That's a shame .....hope it's not serious ? I think his daughter has been in hospital in London, she previously had a Neuroblastoma which is a horrible cancer that can infiltrate bone marrow and various parts of the nervous system, she was in remission at the start of last year, but the disease has a high relapse rate. Get well soon young Mia.

Got back from work and thought I'd check out the women's Ashes on Sky - towards the end of say 2 with Australia on hop.
My main impression is - this is turgid. I've watched around 45 minutes of so during which time England moved from 124-5 to 129-8. Appreciate there are wickets being lost - but they are not trying to score runs. Hardly a shot in anger. Going down with a whimper. Really rubbish stuff from England.

And what a shame - a great opportunity to show off how they play the game. Winning or losing, on this specific occassion, wasn't that important. With the game getting unprecedented media coverage live on Sky Sports and Test Match Special, playing with some style would have benefited the women's game big time. Instead they offered up insipid cricket test no one could enjoy. Rubbish.

Pretty much as we did on the last Ashes tour (except we didn't go there as favourites). Looks like another Ashes series is going to end another bunch of test careers.

Bit of a hiatus on thus thread as we wait for the final test to start, so I thought I'd share with you something of a curiosity. Video highlights from the 1st test v the Windies in 1973 that features a certain Yorkie opening bat hooking a ball from Keith Boyce for 6. I kid you not...
Looks to me like a top edge. Bloody reckless play.

I read that Chris Rogers is retiring after the Oval test...... so that's, the Skipper, Rogers, the 'keeper, Watson (can't see him getting off the floor after this tour, but could be wrong) all to be replaced. That's a rebuilding programme required in anyone's language.
I suppose we could always field a few of the successful women's team supplemented by current Australia 'A' players. Hmm, there's no supposing about this, it has to be a draft of several 'A' players in and pretty soon at that.
This tour promised so much and delivered so little. The problem is there is evidence that world cricket might have sorted out Smith's technique and Mitch is coming to the end of his time, as is Siddle. Fortunately there are several quicks coming through so we could yet dodge a bullet or two - he's hoping. Dear me, aren't we in a bit of a pickle - who would have guessed that a couple of months ago.
Onwards towards an unlikely victory at the Oval I say.

Onwards towards an unlikely victory at the Oval I say. There is a bright side - from 7 down you look very good. Your new keeper is good, you've got a wonderful off spinner and a battery of young quick bowlers. No.6 is sorted as well as Mitchell Marsh looks a very capable all rounder. It's the top order that's the problem, and has been for a considerable time. That said, two of the top 5 are sorted for some time, Warner and Smith. But finding three more competent test match batsmen seems to be a problem for you boys. Has T20 diminished batting standards so much in your part of the world? On Smith - the discussion before the series was how his new technique would stand up to the moving ball, for which it looks vulnerable. And so it has transpired. Fast, straight pitches he looks amazing. A technique, combined with his superb hand eye coordination, that will serve him well in Australia, but poorly anywhere there is some sideways movement. Might need to rethink his approach again. On Warner, if he could bat in the first innings like he does in the second he'd be a bona fide great. Meanwhile England can enjoy the moment knowing, thanks to Australia's feeble showing, our own faults haven't been punished. Particularly opening bat, no spinner and Bell continuing to flatter to deceive. The upcoming UAE tour may well expose these weaknesses much more. Anyway - looking forward to the final test. As disappointing a series as it's been for you, it's been a great summer for us.

Important toss to win. I bet there are some worried batsmen in the Aussies changing room when that coin goes up. They won't fancy batting at all this morning.
I just hope that the Aussies can put up some fight and we have 4 or 5 days of cricket - with England coming out on top obviously.

Brown underpants time for the Aussies then.
Will they make it to lunch - it can't happen again can it?

Brown underpants time for the Aussies then. Will they make it to lunch - it can't happen again can it? Is this really a putting in wicket? This is the Oval. You bat first given the opportunity. A bit too much adrenaline still running through Cook's veins? Have to remember not to fall into the trap of playing the following game as if it was the previous one. I hope we don't come to regret this decision.

Lunch 82-0.
Maybe Alistair should have been thinking of the last time we played in London v Australia and not the last test we played against them.
Could be a long afternoon for our bowlers after a fruitless morning. Anderson might not be too unhappy sitting this one out. Good practice for the UAE tour - having to work hard to get wickets.

I think you may have been right about the pitch. A lot of the media feedback before the toss was saying a seeming pitch and with heavy overhead conditions bowling first - especially with the Aussie current confidence against the moving ball - seemed like a good move.
Nice touch doing a guard of honour for Clarke. Rodgers maybe a bit peeved that they didn't do something for him (though he's hardly a 'great' like Clarke).

250 odd for 3 - hopefully get some more play before the close, but today has been Australia's day (so far).
Turned out to be a poor call by Cook to put them in. Not one of Nasser proportions of course. But something to reflect on. I think the conditions merited some thought, but as Boycs has said (I think it was him) think for a while about putting them in, think a bit more if necessary, then bat! I reckon he was thinking too much about how feeble Australia were in the past two tests and more of the same was in the offing. If so, this was a mistake. They've been bad, but they're not that bad.
We needed Cookie wearing his Cautious Cap today!

Now just on a completely unrelated thought: where's Bispham got to?

Yes - a very quiet thread yesterday. None of the excitement of the first day at Trent Bridge just a day of classic test cricket - steady run accumulation. Patient batting. The sort of thing Bish seems to appreciate; what could be called cricket for the connoisseur. Yes - so surprising he wasn't on here extolling the absence of boundaries at the start of the morning session. Anyway day 2 beckons - repeat of Lords coming up?

I'm looking for the joy of losing the Ashes in what was possibly the worst performance by any Australian side in many years - apart from Lords that is. This test is beginning to have the feel of a more traditional Ashes test though....... and yes I am a Stoke fan and have been since the fifties.
