It's a great pity Luke with all that intelligence they've never quite worked out how to run the country 1945-51 as just one example? Advocated by most political commentators as being the standout government of the 20th century in terms of achievement. In fact most of the advances to our society that we all take for granted right now have come political initiatives which derive from traditionally 'left-leaning' ideology. Rights for workers, social housing, the welfare state, the NHS to name just four. The fact that people over the last 35 years are daft enough to vote for governments red and blue which continually underfund these institutions doesn't make them any less valid. There's more than enough money in this country to solve all of its problems, it's just that most of it is in the hands of people who don't want to share a bigger portion of it, despite being more than able to afford to. And this continuing and deepening austerity seems to be returning us to exactly the kind of Edwardian reliance on private charitable giving (food banks etc) that prompted Attlee to realise that this would never solve poverty and inequality and that state initiated redistribution of wealth would. We seem very much to have given up on that idea. Over the last decade, as living standards dropped for most of us as a result of a neoliberal economy-inspired recession, the wealthiest got even wealthier. If you think that is how to run the country for the majority of people in it, you have some strange idea of how to run a country. Its really interesting to listen to your reminiscences . Most socialists have to refer back to the middle of the last century in order to prove that labour has actually done a decent job in office . Attlee was indeed a visionary , a great leader and someone we should all be grateful to . That was 60 years ago and I can't think of a labour government since then that hasn't bled the country dry and left office with an almighty mess to clean up

Andy burnham shadow Home Secretary and so the political manoeuvring begins
These people refusing to serve corbyn deserve what they get. In life you should be loyal. Loyal to the party they represent and loyal to their democratically elected leader.
They don't have to agree but without unity the party goes no where. Voters won't warm to the likes of cooper and hunt with the track record they are beginning

To me though if an elected member of parliament (who in theory is there to represent the people who voted for them) decides to view an opinion that differs from the parties whip then it is something to be embraced rather than chastised.

Voters won't warm to the likes of cooper and hunt with the track record they are beginning The argument is that: 1. Corbyn has never shown loyalty to any previous Labour Party leader he has been an MP under, and; 2. The convention known as Collective Shadow Cabinet Responsibility means that even if you disagree with the policy of the leadership then, if you're in the Shadow Cabinet, you have to vote for it under the Whip. Therefore, if you completely disagree with Corbyn on certain policies you would not serve in his cabinet. I wouldn't serve in a Corbyn Shadow Cabinet because under no circumstances would I ever agree to NATO withdrawal and unilateral nuclear disarmament.

If you and your attempted bully clique weren't so obviously rattled by Corbyn you wouldn't all be bombarding this thread with your predictions of a doomed Labour party future so much. There is nothing of substance anybody has come up with yet other than repeated spin from the Daily Mail or the Telegraph, it's bordering on the pathetic.

Plenty would though Derrida, and i do mean plenty as was proven by the election figures. Perhaps it's time for you to hypothetically sit on the backbenches...........not that any firm decisions have been made regarding NATO or Nuclear disarmament.... Just as a matter of interest, do you have any personal financial interest in the nuclear lobby or arms industry? Just seems like you are very concentrated on this single issue even though nothing is written in stone as yet.

Just seems like you are very concentrated on this single issue even though nothing is written in stone as yet. I'm not going to go into what I do for a living as that's in direct contravention of message board rules and rather unfair, if you don't mind me saying so. For many, me included, Labour is an internationalist party that believes in solidarity and multilateralism. As the infamous Labour Party membership card says; ‘by the strength of our common endeavour we achieve more together than we do alone’. This article sums things up nicely - www.progressonline.org.uk/2015/09/09/labour-must-remain-true-to-our-internationalist-values/The only thing I will add is that, with the announcement a few moments ago of John McDonnell as Shadow Chancellor, I would be less inclined to think that people will move to the hypothetical backbenches. More that people will now possibly leave the party. McDonnell as Shadow Chancellor is dynamite.

This McDonnell is absolutely mental. Here's what he had to say about the IRA:
It's about time we started honouring those people involved in the armed struggle. It was the bombs and bullets and sacrifice made by the likes of Bobby Sands that brought Britain to the negotiating table. The peace we have now is due to the action of the IRA.

Ask Michael Oatley (MI5 Londonderry Office). And let us not forget that despite the excoriation by the tabloid press of Ken Livingstone for talking to the IRA in the 1980s..the British Government continued talking to the IRA within days of Mountbatten/Warrenpoint. And let us never forget that it was a Labour Government that brought about peace in Northern Ireland and a Conservative one that partitioned Ireland in the first fucking place.

It is difficult to imagine a worse scenario for any Labour supporter than that what we all now face . It is leaderless , it is extreme and it is discreditable . It's policies are unelectable and its mandate to achieve an election victory totally unachievable . I'm not sure how many will stick around when after the lights are switched off , but judging by the grass root support on here the omens are not good . My comments may come across as condescending but they are not meant to . I am merely reflecting the overall calibre of MPS and their future in politics ... Shambolic .

Every day that this current regime is in place its another day longer to get back any credibility and leaving it too long will cause irreperable damage. The damage to Labour started when it became new tory sorry labour and its sunk slowly from there. Slowly at first but now going down pointed end first

Des ...the last Labour government achieved a great deal . Your perception or recollection of it maybe somewhat tainted so I'm not going to enter into a vociferous argument over it .
Google Tony Blairs 50 greatest achievements and it will point you in the right direction .
I don't don't know what's happened to the Labour Party , but I suspect the start of its fall from grace started with Ed Milliband becoming leader . It has been in terminal decline ever since . If that's not bad enough , the forces of evil have colluded to present us with Jeremy Corbyn .
Here's a man who will deliver . He'll deliver everything that was Labour during the 1970s and beyond . He's the original placard dwelling , CND supporting Luvvie , who if allowed would accommodate economic migrants from Gambia without a moments hesitation ...
He doesn't appreciate England's ' Green and pleasant land ' ......he rather visit the local Kurdish community in Islington or the opening of a new Mosque being opened in Hackney by Daine Abbott or Gorgeous George Galloway .
This is 'New Labour ' ....Gay pride ..CND ..Mass Immigration ...Ban the Bomb ....Love thy neighbour ....We are all the same ....Would you like to borrow my bike ?
Crap and Bollocks .
