Just reading the description of his time at Ajax in that Guardian article, sounds like there's a lot of rebuilding of his confidence to be done if he turns up

I cant believe some of the names we are getting linked with now.

With Pulis the big names were always in their thirties and past their best.

Since getting Arnautovic and Muniesa in from abroad and helping get their careers back on track we must be serious contenders for these other stars who dont quite make it to the very top.

I feel like Hughes is good at rebuilding confidence, so this has exciting potential.

He'll be back to his old self once Hughes takes him under his wing. There's a class finisher in there somewhere and Hughes is the man to find him. I have every faith.

Would be a superb signing, a little lightweight from what I remember but you don't make your debut for Barcelona at 18 if you don't have some form of talent, I'm ignoring his spells at Roma and Ajax, Arnautovic, Assaidi and Ireland were well known as being forgotten pro's or problem children, look at how well they ended up playing last season.

We have the added plus of having Muniesa here to help him settle quicker as well, I'd much rather us be linked with younger stars who've lost their way a bit rather than ageing has beens with no sell on value, he's still only 23 if I recall?

Yeah his contract is up next year. I can't see Barca demanding a huge fee after just netting £35m for Sanchez. They'll probably be happy to get him off the books.

Its a hard one to guess... 4/5 million would seem fair however Barcelona need money dont they... they can also argue hes only 23 & before his two loan spells he was progressing ok. I could see a 8-10 mil here.

I think the board are abit more flexible in how much they will spend when it comes to a potential resell later on. At his age then there is alot of potential to profit from it in the future.

Yeah - very hard to gauge.

But doubtful there's going to be an auction given how his spells at Roma, Milan and Ajax went.

If Ajax didn't even want to take him for a second season on loan, that's a pretty powerful message for Barca not to take the piss when setting any prospective fee?

Yeah thats true... just his age & early Barca years make me feel they may try to do that. They have got big things happening this summer & if the ban they recieved gets reinstated you can imagine them trying to get as much business as they can do this summer.

This is the way clubs like us get players of his calibre and we then hope that he rediscovers his best form.

As Lakeland asked earlier, is this a loan being discussed or a permanent move? If all he needs is a metaphorical arm around the shoulder then signing him may be the best thing to do but it represents an exciting risk. It's so left field it's hard to believe.

The problem is that if he finds his feet in the prem league come next summer he will be a free agent.... you can guarantee that bigger clubs will be there waiting.

We have spent little money so far... if Hughes wants him I think Coates will back him now.

Who's to say that if this is a true story, maybe the club have already been given a price. Seems abit crazy to start talking to someone when you dont have any idea what he'll cost. Unless it was to thrash out a loan move.
