This may well be true Squeekster, but you wouldn't want to test the theory at the World Cup.

Irrespective of who people think should or shouldn't play, Ryan on form alone should have gone to Brazil. He had another almost flawless season and outshone all the big name English central defenders. Would we still be in this position? Possibly so but I can't believe he'd have defended the goals we conceded as poorly as Cahill and Jagielka did over the two matches so far and from what we saw over the course of last season he's every bit as good on the ball as England's "premier" defensive duo. Ask Chelsea and Everton fans about this subject and they would say exactly the same as you have about their respective centre halves. Cahill has been imperious for Chelsea over the course of last season and Everton fans talk about Jagielka in the same vein(EFC on here for example). Stoke fans,or a good percentage of them are always going to say Shawcross is the better defender, but stick Shawcross in the heart of the England defence and we wouldn't be any stronger in that department because he isn't head and shoulders above either first choice option despite what some of us might think.

I just don't rate Cahill though, Sid. He's ok but only looks any good alongside John Terry. Factor in that he's a back turning shit house and you get my drift.

Johnson has clearly been swayed by Neville on some matters & we know the Old Trafford view was that Ryan is an excellent defender. If Jageilka is to retire then surely Ryan will get in squads.

The reason that there are so many posts every time there is a thread about Ryan and England is because it is such a big injustice that he has been so totally ignored by the current manager. I've said before that there have been other Stoke players over the last couple of years that at different times had a reasonable claim for an England call up, Crouch, Etherington and Pennant even. However there were always better available in their respective positions and most Stoke supporters accepted that. With Ryan it's different, we have watched him week in week out continually produce performances that deserve International recognition and he's been ignored. I really cannot understand how any Stoke fan who has watched Ryan since our arrival in the top league can argue that there are better England centre backs.

It's definitely up for debate and I'm just trying to point out that the two first choice centre halves who play for England both hold down regular places at their respective club sides(who for the record are both far better teams than Stoke),and will be talked about by their fans in the same regard as Ryan is talked about by us. Don't get me wrong I rate Shawcross and he has been immense for us,and due to his form and the options available(Smalling,Jones etc) he has deserved more than his one solitary call up,but is he that good that it's the massive injustice that Stoke fans would believe? In my opinion it isn't.

Shawcross had Balotteli in his arse pocket every game he played against him and he would have cut out the cross tonight for Suarez. England lost both games because they left the best centre half in the country at home. Blindingly obvious. I wished he had been in his back pocket at the cup final

Hopefully he can get in for Euro 16. Off topic but I couldnt help but think England could have used Crouch after watching the past two matches.

I wished he had been in his back pocket at the cup final I think it was Toure who scored the winner, from a poor Wilson clearance if I remember rightly...?
