I like him. Total idiot but good footballer. At last a proper cdm ball winner not somebody who specialises in getting in peoples way. Yes he gets sent off now and then but he is as good a tackler as there is about. Impressed.

Upgrade on whelan or not. Id much prefer to spend the money on other areas of the pitch at this point

Captain, hard as it is to take away the red mist stupidity and injury record, how would you describe his game? He's a midfield rattler, pure and simple. He closes people down absolutely brilliantly, there is no question about that. The problem is that he sometimes closes people down with so much relish that he gets seriously annoyed when he doesn't get the reward for it. That's when the red mist falls. But he passes the ball quite well, much better than people think. His long passing is especially underrated. I mean he isn't going to spray it around like Pirlo but he's good at spreading the ball out to the flanks. With Poyet though, what he wants for the role Cattermole currently plays is someone with a brain. Someone who will plug the gaps responsibly rather than pursue the ball relentlessly. Cattermole is a very English midfielder in essentially a South American system here (or at least that's the system Poyet wants). But Cattermole is a very good footballer when everything comes together. He can be a genuine force in there. The Brit crowd will love him if/when you see the best of him, and you'd start to understand why Sunderland fans have tended to have been more forgiving of him than the rest of the country think we should be. So ultimately what you're saying is he's a bag of shit, right?

If you could guarentee he won't ever get sent off again then hes a bargain at 5mill i think. But you can't. Walking red card, and he would get waaay more playing for us too. So hope we don't get him.

A few interesting stats about his passing here that we did recently rokerreport.sbnation.com/2014/1/14/5305674/by-the-stats-the-facts-and-figures-behind-sunderlands-passingCheers for that, Captain.

The more I think about this the more it makes sense.. if he can stay on the pitch that is. He would replace Whelan as he is undoubtedly better than him, he is a leader and a talker. Plus he isn't a dreadful footballer, tidy and would take no shit off any of our whiners.

Think this could be a good move not sure about the price,if a deal that suits both parties can be done would add some much needed strength in that part of the pitch.

I really like cattermole as a player but if he's not injured he's suspended ... but for those 8 games of the season he'd be a great buy

May as well of kept Deano! One thing is for sure our red card stats will increase. Difference is Deano could not tackle a school kid and win the ball cleanly. Catermole is a very good tackler, obviously timing is critical and you can't put your foot in like that and get it right every time but as far as tackling goes he gets it right far more often than he gets it wrong. I know the modern game hates ball winners but when I watch a player I want to be able to say what they excell at and Catermole is a very good ball winner I promise you.

If he signs we will see a lot of his name across is back. Has he walks off the pitch towards the tunnel after another red card.

£5 million for Lee Catermole??????!!! Surely not, if the reports are to be believed we weren't even prepared to offer that much for Diouff. I do not believe this.

Would be happy with Cattermole, big upgrade on what we have, and is exactly what we need in the middle of the park. A tackling, ball winner, good passer and someone who will put pressure on the opposition to win the ball back. oatcakefanzine.proboards.com/page/SubscriptionsA walking red card? Most folk think Adam is a walking red card or Scholes was for the Shit. In this day and age where the FA are trying trying to outlaw tackling, an average of 1 red card a season is hardly cause for alarm. He is a player with traits that lost of folk say we are crying out for, "Hard work", "passion" and a "leader". £5m for an established English, ex under 21 premiership experienced player seems about right

I take it your taking the piss - he gets more red cards every season than any other prem player. If you get sent off for good tackling then you must be right. If he was that good why would Blunderland be letting him go.

Cattermole and Adam. That's a double act I'd like to see, but I'd prefer it in a kickboxing venue.

Well if we want to emulate the team Hughes built at Blackburn, which everybody agreed was the best case scenario when Hughes arrived, this is a good move.

We we need more than just a defensive type midfielder.
