I can't help thinking that although he was born in Stockton (I'm guessing he was a Boro fan), he doesn't have a great love for the Mackems and merely followed Bruce there. He's been a captain for most of his career and it was only Di Canio who took the role from him, something Poyet continued. I think he knows his days are numbered so if he can capture his best form we'll have a player who will give his all for the cause. It wasn't too long ago that he was being talked about as Gerrard's successor in the England team. He can safely kiss goodbye to any lingering hope if he comes here, sadly jimmy.

SentinelSTOKE City are inching ever closer to their first formal bid for Sunderland midfielder Lee Cattermole.
That could come as early as this afternoon
Early? Not sure early is the correct term to use on the 30th January!! "Early"? For Stoke's transfer team it counts as positively primordial!

Very interesting in that I seem to recall PC DV saying on Tuesday "interesting to see the line ups" on Wed.
And now we have today's news.

''Closing fast'' is a gross misrepresentation ....
It's more of a slow depressing desperate scraping of the barrel...A war of attrition...

Is this lad an apprentice Joey Barton -
In December 2008, Cattermole was given a three-year ban across the Stockton borough. He was added to the Pubwatch blacklist of troublemakers after being arrested for disorder during a night out in Yarm. Police were called by door staff at about 11:40 pm and Cattermole was subsequently arrested.[22] In March 2011, it was announced that Cattermole's ban would be extended to December 2012 after a unanimous vote by the members of Pubwatch. Cattermole declined to comment on these matters.[23][unreliable source?] Following a night out with team mates, Cattermole was arrested on 6 December 2011 along with Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner and charged with damaging five cars on Stowell Street in Newcastle, close to St James' Park. On 25 March 2012, the case at Newcastle Magistrates Court was adjourned to be brought back before the same court on 16 April 2012. Charges against Bendtner were subsequently dropped.[24] Cattermole accepted a conditional caution and paid over £4,000 in damages.[25] References[edit]

Barton is scum.

GuardianLee Cattermole will not be sold by Sunderland this month after all. Stoke City had been keen to sign the combative midfielder but Gus Poyet is unwilling to sell him to a rival at the bottom of the Premier League.
Even so Cattermole - variously described as "rotten" and "unprofessional" by Poyet's predecessor Paolo Di Canio - now faces serious competition for his first team place.

Thoroughly depressing article. Especially as maybe even Cattermole now looks a long-shot. Got to hope for a surprise or two, which we normally don't get on deadline day.

I'm hoping the Sentinel is going to be wide of the mark, but i've got a looming feeling about today and it ain't a good one! I think our friend Mr Views got a bit too excited last night. Fingers crossed though.

This would be up there as one of the most utterly depressing and uninspiring signings of recent memory.
We're fucking around trying to negotiate a deal for Lee Cattermole.
Just let that one sink in for a second, after 6 years in the Premiership, utterly utterly fucking disgusting.

I imagine they just don't want to sell to a relegation rival. They could however string us along and keep our transfer team tied up all day preventing other deals from advancing... How devious..
