Wasn't Cattermole once hyped as the next Steven Gerrard? Just trying to look at this a little more positively. Where's Captain Fishpaste when you need him? He was on last night, Jim... He's a midfield rattler, pure and simple. He closes people down absolutely brilliantly, there is no question about that. The problem is that he sometimes closes people down with so much relish that he gets seriously annoyed when he doesn't get the reward for it. That's when the red mist falls. But he passes the ball quite well, much better than people think. His long passing is especially underrated. I mean he isn't going to spray it around like Pirlo but he's good at spreading the ball out to the flanks. With Poyet though, what he wants for the role Cattermole currently plays is someone with a brain. Someone who will plug the gaps responsibly rather than pursue the ball relentlessly. Cattermole is a very English midfielder in essentially a South American system here (or at least that's the system Poyet wants). But Cattermole is a very good footballer when everything comes together. He can be a genuine force in there. The Brit crowd will love him if/when you see the best of him, and you'd start to understand why Sunderland fans have tended to have been more forgiving of him than the rest of the country think we should be. A few interesting stats about his passing here that we did recently rokerreport.sbnation.com/2014/1/14/5305674/by-the-stats-the-facts-and-figures-behind-sunderlands-passingCheers Grapey. I couldn't be bothered to trawl through all umpteen pages of a thread about Lee Cattermole.

The answer to a Vale fans prayers!
Whilst we DO need a midfield destoyer to protect the back 4 we certainly don't need a hot head who will apply himself unintelligently and be suspended for most of the rest of the season. How long before him and N'Zonzi start throwing their handbags at each other?
Not for me I'm afraid.

If anybody bothered to read the thread on the Sunderland board, you will find more than a few think Cattermole is their best midfielder (a bit like the blinkered Whelan brigade) and just the guy to have while trying to scrap out of a relegation battle. Maybe Leslie fancies 2 holding midfielders, and his passing cannot be anyworse than Nonzi. The only reason for getting rid, is that he does not suit Poyet's way of playing is will be replaced by a cheaper dubious Sussex Sliced bread. So far Poyet seems to be doing us a great job by signing total unknowns from foreign leagues and potentially weakening the side. As many on the Sunderland board said, why on earth sell him to a relegation rival. Really hope they're not like the Whelan brigade otherwise I don't want him.

He's something of a slight sideways move and I'm not 100% sure what to make of him although Ive got a niggling feeling that he would a good signing for us and add some energy and bite to the midfield. I think we bought him in for more like 2 mill and then got rid of Edu and Palacios then I think we'd be in a slightly stronger position. This.
Then, if he knocks spots off Whelan in that role, then we'll know.
I agree as well. Let him replace Edu and Palacios in the squad and MH can then choose his favoured pairing between him, Whelan and N'Zonzi. If we pick up a FB then maybe you can throw Wilson and/or Web-Cam (see my variation on G-cam - ha ha, comedy at its finest!) into the mix for the DCM roles.

He is good on the ball but his reputation now proceeds with him after all those red cards.
theres plenty of holding midfielders out there that CAN tackle but dont get sent off. Scott Parker (undisclosed), Gareth Barry (loan), Tom Huddlestone (5mln)
I think we should be looking in this kind of bracket - not just "Is he better than Palacios/Whelan?"

If we are that desperate for a hard un in mid-field, shove Wilko in there - he can destroy em equally as well as Cattermole. Just a cheap thought.

Hate to say it but on reflection I'm warming to this one. I seem to spend most of every game this season screaming "close him down" or "press the space".
Cattermole will do that better that any of our current squad have done so far this season.
It's not inspiring but every team needs a water-carrier, and for all the chopping and changing, we haven't found one who's reliable yet. Glen is the pick of the bunch for me, and that says it all really.
If he comes in and we keep the ball better and win the ball back better as a result, then it'll be no bad thing.

Good points..........but do you think he would be good value if we spend £5million to get him? I personally think it's very likely if that if he is bought at £5m then it will impact in a major way on the available spending intended to strengthen our pace and goal scoring options. This is a complex conundrum potentially. Hopefully PC has just opened up the Bet365 bank again but I do have my doubts, tbh. I will wait with baited breath..... more in hope than expectation though

Other than that, he isn't. If we wanted to gear up for a return to the championship we already have a squad ideally suited for that division. I'd suggest that Hughes thinks he might be able to resolve how piss poor we are at winning the fall back.

Edu and Palacios out and £3 mil for LC would be decent business. Something needs to be done about the laize faire midfield of nzonzi and Whelan not performing when we need them most. Is Cattermole it? I think he'd add something we lack a ball winner in midfield. Anything near the £5mil reported is ridiculous. I'd rather move Cameron into the midfield and move Wilko to rb and use the £5 mil on a striker or cb elsewhere.

By all means try Cameron as the holding midfielder but I'd put Wilson not Wilko at RB. I don't thnk we should spend big money on a CB.

Cattermole is just what we need. Hardworking terrier like midfielder that breaks the play up superbly. He's a bit of a dirty cunt but still he will some steal to the midfield and hopefully allow other players to attack. He'd have to sort his short shorts out though!! Not a good look.

I'd rather have shotton at rb than see the turgid Wilson near our defence again tbh. We need a proper cb for cover (huth) and rb so we can move Cameron up. Till then hughes will look to bring in more CM competition obviously it seems Cattermole would improve the squad but question is how much? Its better than having 2 cdms who dont play or are worth wages in Edu and Palacios.
