I've been out all afternoon so thought I'd log on read about the match. I've gone through 10 pages of nothing really on about the match instead slating Jon Walters!!.... How pathetic!! I've said before and I'll say again, Walters up front is ok. He's proved before that alongside jones they are a good partnership that work well and score goals! However on the wing he's bloody useless! I've clicked in now that we won 1 nil and the boo boy scored! Keep slating folks He played well out wide today mate. Changed the game. What about the fullbacks bud? Pieters and muniesa did they play a part?

Wrexham nobody's fools -a good workout for both teams today , Delighted to see Pennant looking lean and fit and ready to go along with, Nzonzi & Palacios (no issues there). My singular worry - how the hell do you pick your first eleven on todays showing ?
Plainly Hughesy sees a lot more of the than we do - but selecting the first eleven must be extremely difficult at present because there is so little to choose between so many of them, especially in midfield - as for Peter Crouch - we definitely need someone whose fast and cute enough to play off him for, the one thing that was obvious - we have no one who can do that
Solid - Huth - Shawcross - Begovic - Sorenson - Crouch - Jones - Walters
best showings = Palacios, Nzonzi, Cameron, Muniesa & Pennant (gulp and err -err well ahem ermm um ----- Whelan ---- gulp)
suspect - Kightly - -Adam - Etherington - Pieters (defensively)
poor outings - Wlkinson - Jerome - Wilson

People need to remember this team nearlly got us relegated last season....If not for a poor qpr and norwich team. I just think TP knew that these players needed to be super fit to make up for there shortcomings. If MH thinks that passing the ball instead of super fit will help, we are in a mess.... Predictions on the current squad first result at liverpool would be interesting!

"Squad player" is such a strange expression. What does it mean? Of course he is, like everyone else in the squad are... otherwise they would not BE in the squad, would they? In Sweden we have an expression "lagspelare" = team player, meaning a player who can play in EVERY position and be doing a good job. Like M Ehrlingmark did in IFK Gothenburg when he was playing. Maybe that's what it means? Btw, was the Pighead Whelan allowed to play? ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/800541/images/KYqg3pYeaerc5lD_P7BR.gif)

I think Wrexham underestimated how many Stokies were coming to the game, slowly opening up more and more of the stand, and then apologising to the Stoke fans for running out of hot food BEFORE half time!

He played well out wide today mate. Changed the game. What about the fullbacks bud? Pieters and muniesa did they play a part? As i've said above. Pieters looks quality going forward. Overlaps at will and doesn't always whack in the cross, sometimes intelligently laying a pass off. Defensively I worry about him. I'm not quite sure how he will cope with pace. Muniesa (replaced Pieters) wasn't the soft touch I was expecting him to be. Solid enough and willing to get stuck in. Decent but unspectacular on the ball. Doesn't overlap like Pieters but supports the winger from deep. Both interesting players.

He's giving them a lot of freedom to cut inside and do a bit from the inside channels, leaving a lot of space for an overlapping full back. Not quite sure that's Pieters' game (on the evidence i've seen so far) to be honest.

Thoughts on today. Tactics: Very much a 4-5-1. Not a 4-4-1-1. Interesting to see. In possession, the centre backs pull wide, one of the midfielders drops in, full backs push up and wingers push into an old fashioned 'inside forward' position. Point of note here: Shawcross and Huth look awkward in possession. Whelan looks awkward in possession. Adam drops into space intelligently, similar to what he did at Blackpool and Pennant/Etherington cannot do the inside forward role very well, if at all. Crouch looks totally unsuitable to playing up front on his own. The team as a whole look paceless and seriously lacking in quality in the final third. Erik Pieters. Looks great going forward. Very worrying defensively. Caught out a lot today in the first half with simple balls over the top. Kightly. Looks decent in the inside forward position, takes positions well but quality, as per last season, looks hit and miss. Jones. Infinitely better than Crouch on his own up front with his movement but again, chronically hit and miss with his touch. Walters. Turned the game from the wide right forward position. Pressed and probed and found space constantly. Palacios. Impressed again and fingers crossed this translates into the Premier League. Jerome. Oh dear. Positionally awful and the first touch of a rapist. Time to move on. I hope the comments from Hughes tonight are smoke and mirrors because i'm genuinely worried about us. I like the look of what Hughes is trying to do but the balance of the team is a million miles off. We need dynamism in the middle of the park, pace in all three positions up front and two genuine wide men who can cut in and do a bit inside. We need a minimum of four players before the end of August else it will be a long hard season for us. This is concerning especially your other post about Hughes being a frustrated figure. Brilliant post mate...It sums up what I have being trying to say but far better... The defence are not footballers, they are defenders..They can head and kick the ball very, very well. If we let the midfield push up a little, the defence will lose there protection and may concede more this season. The wingers cqnt get past the full back and cross the ball as they have no pace. The forwards are too old, too lazy, have no brains or just not natural goal scorers. Im am not slagging the players but the league does not lie. A last point on Pieters...You dont get a dutch international for 3m unless he aint that great!! I will no doubt get lots of insults on this but I think these are nothing more than facts.

From the two games streamed from America I'd do everything I could to squeeze Muniesa in the side. Pieters as a winger is an option I guess but I'd like to see him in midfield. His passing was excellent, he's tough, can tackle and more importantly he could read the game. The best DM's in the world intercept more than they tackle nowadays. I'd like to see him being given a go there.

by the way folks - Isnt Loic Remy up on a rape charge ?
brillant strategy to sign a bloke that might just get 5 years eh ?
And, I did not see Huth or Shawcross looking 'awkward / uncomfortable in possession' for one nano second today - that's just a load of horseshit
(some fecker earlier on this long thread actually suggesting we actually sign him (yeah right)

You would think its obvious that his contract and wages would have some kind of security with this in mind. Did you see his goals last season, we dont have anyone with his pace, etc. For 2m loan fee, would be a bargain. It would just give MH a bit of security too. He has a difficult job trying to make a silk purse out of a pigs ear.

We also have 10 of the starting 11 who got us to the FA cup final and played some great stuff, sticking 3 (at least) pass Arsenal, Wolves and Newcastle. What we need to do us play the players who complement each others strengths and have a good understanding. But also when players hit a bad run of form they need to be dropped, get them on the training ground working hard and making them hunger to get back in the starting XI.

Fair point but you have to freshen things or you get left behind. That was 2 years ago now, history is history. Crouch and KJ are not interested for different reasons. KJ is in his final year...He will either sign a new contract or be sold before the season starts...Probably sold.

A squad player is someone who is often used on the subs bench, as oppose to a first team player. Makes sense to me.

One thing is for sure we can't play Crouch as an isolated striker up front! If we do that against Lpool we might as well play without strikers and replace him with another defender or midfielder!

Today's result and performance are not important. These players should be good enough to deliver reasonable results in the PL league.

I cant understand the Whelan haters...TP once said he holds our team together, how right he was. I think there about 7 or 8 other players that would be out before Whelan.

If you think standing on the ball, tripping over the ball and taking three or four touches to get it under control is anything other than how i've described it then fair play to you. They didn't do it for 90 minutes and yes, once it was under control they were happy to pass it 5 yards here and there but let's not kid ourselves here. There is playing football and passing the ball. The pair of them are not natural footballers and it shows badly. Against Premier League players who will close more efficiently, more fastly and for longer than the Wrexham lads did today it will be chronic viewing and we will gift goals through it. I guess the proof of the pudding will be in the eating.

This transition is obviously going to take some time after the Pulis years.

I thought both our centre backs look solid and untroubled all day - controlling and passing the ball confdently throughout - even moving forward with it into the oppositons half (unheard of under Pulis)
no 'one touch then lamp it' did I see today
its just amazing how different people see exactly the same thing - totally differently
I DID NOT see our centre backs in trouble possession wise throughout -and to report that to hundreds who look in on here is at best
repeat - misleading - at best !
horseshit at worst - sorry but its how I saw it

They weren't in "trouble" against him because he has the mobility of a wheelie bin and the stamina levels just a little above myself. Like I said, taking three/four touches to get the ball under control in tight situations and/or standing on the ball will not be alright in the Premier League. Fowards are fitter, stronger, have more stamina and overall far more clever than what we played against today. If you want to accuse me of misleading people or spouting horsehit then fair enough, your opinion. I'm not. I'm calling it as I see it. Just like you.
