Walters is "faster than the average"??? Faster than the average what? Ermm, footballer perhaps ![(tumbleweed)](//storage.proboards.com/800541/images/kSNLZ0b2y75fgSEtBuPM.gif) Is that why he was outpaced in a foot race against MERTESACKER? He is very slow when compared to other footballers.

Is it mental breakdown time again?
* It's only a friendly.
* Walters is a very good squad player to have on the books.
* Don't slit your wrists until you've seen us play a few prem games.
* Crouch and Jones can both score at this level. More than previously given better service.

It scary how much money that potentially will be lost because we cannot get rid of the players we have, and seem content to sit and take the money. It's one of the reasons that made sacking TP such an inevitable decision, hopefully we can shift some players even if it means taking a hit because if we don't we could just end up suffocating ourselves. I could not agree more Bayern. ![(thumbsup)](//storage.proboards.com/800541/images/q4Mqf5MqRwT9PY8UitYa.gif)

Hoilett would be good because he can play on either winger or as the second striker. Hoilett & Remy for Crouch & cash.....doubt it, but would be an ideal start Hoilett & Remy for Crouch & cash..... plus Ince or Sinclair Fabian and Agudelo (one for the future) Jones out. Matty out (shame). Ness out. Edu out. IMHO.

We could talk for ever on here (some already do) about who we should sign, but the reality is the club is leaving it late again in the transfer window. And there's little evidence of any real move to address our serious lack of attacking pace and finishing.
I'd be really interested in knowing the extent of the owners' aims for the "new direction" they wanted to take post Pulis..

WP looked good, his covering allowed the full backs plenty of freedom IMO.

Anyone know how pennant played? I thought Pennant looked a bit rusty, lots of effort tho, backtracking and covering for Cameron when he went forward. His crossing could have been better tho.

Stoke should be beating like Wrexham 6 - 0. Wrexham are in the conference one league up from a pub side . I think we will struggle worse than last season ..

My views on the match.
The formation looked like a 4-2-3-1 with the Whelan and Adam taking it in turns to operate in the hole, Etherington and Pennant with the freedom to drift in and take up positions inside as well as offering some width. The fullbacks were pushing on far more than under Pulis and was impressed with Peters going forward. The centre halves have adapted well to the new way of building the play. We held the ball well and moved it around causing some problems with the space the 3 advanced midfielders were taking. They are the positives. The problem however is twofold. One, we don't have enough goals from midfield, there was a reluctance to test the Wrexham keeper and we have no more than 10 goals from any of Crouch or Jones. A new striker who is a 15-20 goal threat is a priority. I was tentatively impressed today but concerned we may still not have enough goals in us.
On Wrexham - I was impressed, for a conference team they played good football and competed well. The 50/50 with Ryan and their young striker Reid was a highlight, not very often Ryan comes off 2nd best in those! Also impressed with the boy Evans and with Harris.

Thoughts on today.
Tactics:
Very much a 4-5-1. Not a 4-4-1-1.
Interesting to see. In possession, the centre backs pull wide, one of the midfielders drops in, full backs push up and wingers push into an old fashioned 'inside forward' position.
Point of note here: Shawcross and Huth look awkward in possession. Whelan looks awkward in possession. Adam drops into space intelligently, similar to what he did at Blackpool and Pennant/Etherington cannot do the inside forward role very well, if at all. Crouch looks totally unsuitable to playing up front on his own. The team as a whole look paceless and seriously lacking in quality in the final third.
Erik Pieters. Looks great going forward. Very worrying defensively. Caught out a lot today in the first half with simple balls over the top. Kightly. Looks decent in the inside forward position, takes positions well but quality, as per last season, looks hit and miss. Jones. Infinitely better than Crouch on his own up front with his movement but again, chronically hit and miss with his touch. Walters. Turned the game from the wide right forward position. Pressed and probed and found space constantly. Palacios. Impressed again and fingers crossed this translates into the Premier League. Jerome. Oh dear. Positionally awful and the first touch of a rapist. Time to move on.
I hope the comments from Hughes tonight are smoke and mirrors because i'm genuinely worried about us. I like the look of what Hughes is trying to do but the balance of the team is a million miles off. We need dynamism in the middle of the park, pace in all three positions up front and two genuine wide men who can cut in and do a bit inside.
We need a minimum of four players before the end of August else it will be a long hard season for us.

One other point I want to make is about Hughes.
He's cutting a VERY frustrated figure already. Lost count the amount of times he lost it with some of the lads both in and out of possession in the first half.

They must have been queueing at the food hut. He got out of the dugout around 15 minutes and spent the rest of the half flapping his arms, swinging his arms, gesticulating and all sorts. I don't think he was too happy at the midfield and the front four. No water bottles yet though. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/800541/images/KYqg3pYeaerc5lD_P7BR.gif)

I've been out all afternoon so thought I'd log on read about the match. I've gone through 10 pages of nothing really on about the match instead slating Jon Walters!!.... How pathetic!!
I've said before and I'll say again, Walters up front is ok. He's proved before that alongside jones they are a good partnership that work well and score goals! However on the wing he's bloody useless!
I've clicked in now that we won 1 nil and the boo boy scored! Keep slating folks
