Shame it wasn't a "first-class" 5 fer ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/800541/images/kwfoKwtHI0jglJZ4qZf6.gif) For me it should not have lost its first class status .....circumstances dictated what happened .....it is a shame that one or two good personal performances will not show up in the records . On a brighter note Compton had a good day for Worcester against the Aussies 79 ....he has done everything that has been asked of him since being left out .....a big hundred for Somerset , 85 and 79 against Australia

They changed the rules though, it's not permitted for a team to just add different players to their team during a "proper" match. That's basically why it lost it's status. In a test match if say Swann and Anderson got injured, we wouldn't be allowed to bring on 2 players who aren't in the starting XI to bowl, that defies the rules.

I know why it happened , but it did not diminish the quality or standard of the game , in fact it improved It surely thats what " first class " implies ?.I remember about 25 years ago England's wicket keeper ( it may have been Bruce French ) was injured....Bob Taylor who had retired from the game was working as a match sponsor was allowed to keep wicket as a replacement .....their was no suggestion of the game losing "test" status

It's part of the rules and regulations for ECB First Class cricket, and first class in that respect refers to the professional game rather than the perceived standard of the game. If a match is rubbish you can't then say "well that's not First Class cricket is it"
If you allowed what happened in this match to happen in any professional first-class match then there'd be some farcical goings on.

Boycott on the right (end of the sitting down players) as You look at it paying no interest?
And on the opposite an evil looking version of Andrew Strauss.
And this is a pure guess is the bloke standing up between Boycott and the other one, D'Olivera?

Yes that's Basil D'oliveira ......the evil looking bloke you refer to is John Edrich, fine left handed opening batsman, the bravest I've ever seen

I know that mate and I know you have to have rules and regulations and that you have to adhere to them , but this is not likely to happen on a regular basis is it? There were extenuating circumstances .......still no point in banging on about it it's done with ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/800541/images/kwfoKwtHI0jglJZ4qZf6.gif)

He doesn't look evil particularly, just an evil version of Straussy! ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/800541/images/kwfoKwtHI0jglJZ4qZf6.gif) I'd like to say the bloke by Boycott was Trueman but I aren't convinced it is.

If you mean the bloke in the pads at the opposite end of the bench.....thats Alan Knott the wicket keeper ....the bloke sitting next to Boycott is Edrich . Trueman had retired by then

85 and 79 against Australia Plus the form for Somerset can't be ignored......more heavy scoring I tend to think it will be ignored .....when they picked him for India he was the pencilled in replacement for Strauss .....Root has thrown a spanner into the works .....no one expected him to perform as well as he has done .....who would be a selector ?

England dropped Compton to get Bairstow into the team as they see him as a better long term bet. Still how times have changed a player with two centuries in his last 7 tests can't get a game for England whereas an Aussie with two test centuries in the last 7 years (Watson) is one of the first picks.

Barstow was in the team already , someone had to be left out to accommodate the return of Pietersen....as you say Bairstow is seen as one for the future ( rightly so) as is Root ( although his position is firmly cemented in place ) the only alternative was to leave out Compton . Watson is not a bad player, for a lot of those seven years he was batting down the order , when he moved up to open he had a lot of success ,scoring plenty of half centuries ....he just didnt seem to be able to convert them into hundreds ....lets hope he carries on in that vein

Summer has finally arrived it's the Ashes. Can't wait for the morning, just hope we get off to a good start and put them under pressure as I think it could set the tone for the whole series. If we let their batsmen have a sniff it will give them major confidence and I can see it being a real ding dong battle. I honestly think all those predicting a 4 or 5-0 witewash will be dissapointed, my money is on a 2-1 win for England with a couple of tight draws thrown in. Can see the Aussie attack doing well if they stay fit..............
