If he's to be our manager then he has my full backing. I hope he's hugely successful. Agreed, hope the rest of the muppets take that attitude, luckily the few hundred on this board are a fraction of the total fan base Why are Stoke fans who express genuine concern and misgivings about the propsect of Hughes becoming manager "muppets"? Are contrary opinions not valid?

Let's see which players he brings in I'm not a Hughes fan but I am willing to see how this turns out. Here's to an exciting new season!

I don't want him but I will get behind him, I hope be proves me wrong just like Pulis did. There were some supporters who wouldn't back Pulis no matter what he achieved and it will be the same with Hughes. Couldn't we have just chosen someone who the majority would agree with ? We don't seem to have really cast our net very wide and have plumped for the 'cheap' option yet again. Huge missed opportunity IMHO Name someone who would have unified the fans? Any foreign manager would have been met with - huge risk as no Prem experience (see Wolves and Blackburn as examples). Anyone else? Everyone suggested was met with derision by some on here except those whose CV's meant they were never going to join us. Hughes definitely isn't perfect. He won't get everyone behind him (and with the tone of some of the 'Rimmers' - that just wasn't going to happened anyway was it).

Not a Hughes fan either but it looks like its going to happen so I'll be 100% behind him and the club. I'm sure the majority of fans will too. It will only be on here where most of the dissent at his appointment will be.

Ukcstokie, I can't quite work out the relevance of your point in relation to my post. Pullis loved the club, did a stack of local charity work, and for a time worked wonders with a really quirky style of,play....he couldn't sustain this and descended into the pits over the last 18 months...however, my point is that the new man in charge does not give confidence the the club will develop, he has not been well disposed to us in the past, and the trajectory of his career is questionable...am I allowed these opinions or not?

He was the one person I didn't want. But hopefully he's learned from his stupid mistakes in the past and we'll benefit from his good and bad experiences. He's going to be part of Stoke so I'm going to be wishing him the best and hoping he does as good a job as his predecessor.

I will get behind MH 1 million percent, like i did with TP,even though i remembered the awful football we played during his first stint. If the football is as horrible as TP then i have a right to complain.Dont forget TP got the sack first time for his lack of ability in the european market, sounds familiar

Seems the Administrators are crushing any early dissent on here. Two HHW threads binned already today. Oh wind your neck in. The threads were shit binned for one reason; they were completely pointless and could have been posted in one of the many threads already on the subject. How many bloody Mark Hughes threads do we need?

Although mines only 18 years. Never felt so underwhelmed or pissed off by a potential management appointment and we've seen a few rubbish ones. If we were in a lower league it would be seen as a good appointment, but we're not, we're in the prem and we can do far better than him. As some have said ill support the players not the manager, but if it all goes wrong there will be more than enough voices telling the manager what a count he is and I will be one of them. I will make a point now of never ever singing Mark Hughes name unless it involved calling for his head.

It is a stupid question I'm afraid cos the answer is "of course not" - same as the last couple of seasons when the PHWs have not been behind Pulis - increasingly so since Christmas. I aint got a problem with that either BTW, cos I respect everyone's opinions no matter how crazy some may be AND I recognise that "not backing the manager" does NOT equate to not supporting the team.
So I will of course accept FMH as the new manager, and I will ache and bleed for us to win every match as I always do, BUT you will not catch me singing the barmy armys song or asking for a wave...... ;-)
Does that make sense?

Let's be honest, whoever we got in (even if we'd have tempted Alex Ferguson out of retirement!) there will always be people with gripes and moans about any manager. If 99% that's roughly 22,000 get behind him at home and those that go away (who always do anyway) and he produces the goods then I couldn't give a flying f@ck what the moaners think.

Mark Hughes talks the talk and now its time for him to walk the walk.
His last chance to get it right in the big league, so could be interesting.
Early games will be the thing as a few wins will ignite the most passionate crowd in the prem behind him, but losses could cause full scale revolt as he is clearly not the fans choice.
I don't want Martinez he reminds me of Cheryl Cole, looks good , pity cant sing. Poyet , Zola, no experience and are we really in a strong enough position to give them the chance. Rafa and De Matteo not interested , were not big enough for them (their loss)
Doesn't leave much does it , so Yeh give the man a chance he couldn't make us play any worse so whats to lose.

I don't understand the preference for RDM over Hughes.
The same for Poyet. Hughes has probably had a better career in the Prem compared to all the other names mentioned (Martinez, RDM and Poyet) bar Rafa, and he was perhaps always a pipe dream after winning the Europa. His stock was just too high.
There are mitigating factors and individual circumstances (budgets etc) that obviously come into it but I'd still argue that Hughes' record is better than most the names we've been linked with.
The feeling of disappointment in regard to him taking over is surely based on his most recent exploits at QPR instead of a longer-term view of what he has achieved overall in his career?
I wouldn't have been against a big shake up and going in a completely different direction (somebody like Martinez) but if we are being honest, this probably represents a wiser choice for us, in terms of progression. Coates' wasn't likely to tear up the blue print and start again.
Under Hughes we will undoubtedly play more expansive football. He's obviously given assurances to Coates that he will get behind and fully support the Academy too, with a shared outlook that younger players are the way forward. Not just "the kids", but younger first team players in general with sell on value down the line.
He will no doubt keep the mentality and spirit that we all relate to and help us regain our identity, if you like, in that aspect.
He ticks a lot of boxes and if he can get us in the top 10, playing more expansive/entertaining football, I don't see what's not too like.
It's obviously a big ask, and there is a lot of work to be done, but it makes a lot of sense if you ask me. It's a good fit for both parties.
We've just got to get behind him now and give him the time he needs.

Hughes then set about creating a formidable side at Ewood Park. He entered the transfer market, bringing in players such as Benni McCarthy (£2 million), David Bentley (£500,000), Ryan Nelsen (free), Stephen Warnock (£1.5 million), Roque Santa Cruz (£3.5 million), and Christopher Samba (£400,000). Rovers finished 10th in the Premier League in 2006–07, and reached the UEFA Cup round of 32, where they were knocked out by Bayer Leverkusen 3–2 on aggregate
Ignore his QRP stint and give the guy a chance.

You don't have to like the guy .....I never thought that Pulis was particularly likeable .....but if you call yourself a Stoke supporter, you have to get behind him to start with and give the guy a fair crack of the whip I don't actually agree. The manager of your football club carries all of your hopes and dreams in their hands. Maybe 'like' isnt the right word but you do need to respect, trust and admire them. As things stand I don't feel any of those things and Hughes is going to have to work hard to earn those attributes for me to feel anything other than apathy towards him. If you adopt that outlook then you are never going to have anything but apathy towards the guy.......how could you possibly respect ,trust and admire somebody other than Hughes if they had got the job , before a ball of next season has been kicked ? If he gets the job as looks certain now, he deserves the opportunity to make a good fist of it ....prejudgment and criticism beforehand can only be counter productive for the club.....Not that will it will stop the moaners from moaning though .

Given how Hughes Blackburn played I think there indeed doubts as to the likehood of a more 'footballing' style actually.
I'm utterly depressed & increasingly bewildered by this appointment. Makes no sense at all to me as he doesn't fit many of the criteria touted as the reason for change. No record of bringing youth through as far as I aware which was always seen as the biggest point of difference between Coates & TP. He will look at the foreign markets to be fair so that is one box ticked however his record in the transfer market at Man City & QPR is beyond shocking & frankly alarming in the extreme.

No! I will get behind the lads 100% but Hughes can fuck off! So after calling people shit fans for moaning about the Pulis 'if you don't like it don't go' etc, and going on about how you were a better fan than everyone cause you loved Pulis and loved Stoke and went to games before 2008 blah blah, you're now saying that you won't support a man who we haven't even played a game under. The people who didn't like TP didn't like him because we had to put up with his shocking football. We haven't had to put up with anything bad from Mark Hughes, he hasn't even signed for us yet! What reasons can you possibly have for not supporting Mark Hughes? If we start playing players out of position, losing games because of his stubbornness etc then fair enough, but could you not at least start neutral and wait for the performances to sway you towards and away from him. I await your heavily emoticon-filled reply.

My point being that Hughes is apparently the first new manager you are struggling to back in 42 years - a period that has included many managers of dubious reputations - especially Pulis's second coming. Pulis went onto do great things - both in and outside of the club, but for what he did in his first stint here you must surely have more reservations than for a manager arriving who has regularly delivered top 10 placings? Of course you're allowed the opinions - just as I'm allowed to challenge them if you share them on a message board. I just can't see that this appointment should be viewed as worse than the second signing of Pulis (and look how good that turned out to be for the first few years).

I am deeply sceptical of Hughes and his journeyman track-record in the top flight & disappointed we seem unable to engage a suitibly unifying manager. If it's the best we can do then so be it but it smacks of us having to accept a default choice (which may or may not be true).
This "getting behind him" stuff is tiresome and difficult for those who dislike him on a personal level for various reasons, not least observing him on the touchline and comments made in interviews following games we have had with his teams of the years.
As ever, love Stoke and will always crave the win and go mental at a goal but FMH will have to earn his respect by way of his achievements and I will be the first to give him credit where it's due should that transpire......
On the other hand....
