Oh the memories of early childhood when everything was warm and cosy and the sun shone all day -especially in the long summer holidays off school.

My Dad used to take me in the Stoke End. The first match I can remember was the 3:2 against Leeds when we broke their unbeaten run. I assume the away supporters must have been in that end also but I cannot remember where as I was too young?
Was it cheaper to go in the Stoke End compared to the Boothen?

Used to always get crushed going through the turnstile, probably my owd man croggin me in.
Seemed to remember fighting towards the back quite regularly.
Was disconcerted one match when playing Liverpool and it was packed and we ended up near the right hand corner flag when looking from the Boothen.
Keegan taking the corners and getting dogs abuse! ;D
Loved the old Stoke end where it all began. A three day treck, well felt like it, to the bogs for a youngun!

Used to go on the old Stoke end with my Old man. Blackpool at home was one of my first games - we lost and Jimmy Robertson scored direct from a corner.
They really were marvellous days!

Indeed they were. Bill Bentley played for Blackpool that day. I used to stand near the back just to the left of the goal.

In the early 60s when I was about 10 or 11 a few of us used to climb over the old red gates about 11 o.clock in the morning, and hide in the bogs and wait untill nearly KO. ;D

It was 10p cheaper to get into the stoke end compared to the Boothen...the view from that end of the groeund was better, and the perspective on the stadium was just fantastic...for me when the stoke end was demolished the ground was never the same again

Loved the old Stoke End. I used to go missing on a Saturday afternoon (lived on Campbell Road) and went t the match on my own if no uncles were going. Imagine a seven or eight year old going matches on their own now! Most times someone would lift me over the turnstile, and with the 9d (4 pence in new money) i saved i could go Campbell road chippy after the match.
I can vouch that it never ever rained, the sun always shone (even at night matches) and it was in fact a very moderate 22 degrees all year round.

I got soaked on the stoke end ! It was against Newcastle a month or so before the league cup final - think it was a 3 - 3 draw and waddo said anyone on the stoke end that day deserved a wembley ticket ! ( It rained like today all match ! ) We got our tickets but had to join the queue in the early hours like everyone else ! Like others my first and lasting memories are of watching from the stoke end.

I remember getting soaked on the Old Stoke End. It was against Newcastle I think we were leading 3-1 and it ended up 3-3.
Lets say I don't think the end was full by the end of the game. I was supposed to go to my cousins birthday party straight after the game in Hartshill. Ended up catching a bus back to Maybank with my dad as we were that soaked. By the time I got to my cousins the party was over. I was just a kid at the time.
It was a huge end. Getting old now I prefer decent seats and reasonable toilets. I don't have nostalgia for toilets that looked and smelled like Newcastle cattle market.

I believe they ripped out one of the turnstyles altogether...Frightening stuff.

I sometimes used to sit on the wall near the St Johns ambulance men, and i think it was that Newcastle match when i was smacked in the kisser by a wayward Malcom McDonald screamer. It was definately sunny, i remember eating loads of ice cream that day and getting third degree sunburn.

Just wondering what the record attendance was for the Stoke end terrace as it seemed to stretch forever and as stated above they had a bus service to the bogs ;D Many, many fond memories as a young Stokie.

Well, my first game was in November '62 against Portsmouth and my dad took me on what he always referred to as the Town End. He perched me on top of one of the crush barriers and, as I was only just four, sadly I remember very little of the game except for something afterwards.
We were winning 2-1 towards the end and dad decided he would leave early to avoid my getting crushed. As we walked away, a woman was cleaning the step on one of the terraced houses around the ground and shouted to me "have they won, duck?" and I was as proud as punch to say "yes they have."
Thus began a lifetime of supporting the team. I've taken my own children, we still have three season tickets and have done so for donkey's years and I now have a little grandson who is being indoctrinated in the Stoke way as we speak. It all began on the Stoke End and I miss it still.

It closed at the end of the 1977/78 season Mark. This is a pretty decent picture of the Victoria Ground from the Stoke End in the early 70's.

Cheers Dave, I remember it but not very well. I was only 7. My dad started taking me in about 77.
I used to love going then, we lived in uttoxeter then, it used to take us hours to get to the ground. Sitting in the butler st stand watching the boothen end and the paddocks, great memories.
