My first match was in the old stoke end, drew with Everton 1-1, big John scored from a penalty, if my memory serves me correct, seem to remember Bill Bentley playing in that team. Laurie Leslie in goal.

I started my Stoke career in that end. So many memories of that great terracing. A thing i will never forget was when we played West Ham. The rain was belting down and West Ham fans filled the toilet at the bottom near to the paddock. Being so young i was a bit wary of going to the loo for fear of getting my head kicked in. Eventually, i could wait no longer and pushed my way in. This huge black Hammers fan shouted at his fellow supporters. '' Oi let this young Stoke fan through, if anybody touches him, i'll have ya''. Cheers big fella.

Used to go through the 'juvenile' turnstile on my own. I remember looking back to see the 'half time' scores. I still went the Town End when i was older. Soon as you got through the turnstile, Eric Handley would be selling something or other. Only got worried when we played Leeds after Jackie Marsh clattered one of thier players, got a bit nasty near the end and outside. I hid my scarf and slinked away.

Can remember long treck up the steps then awe at massive open terrace. Away fans stood in middle, surrounded by Stokies. I always stood by the wall pitch-side, can remember Don Ratcliffe's cracking thunderbolt goals and that shot from Real Madrid bloke in the 2-2 draw. Amazing.

Hmmm. Oddly enough the only time I went the Stoke end was for Sir Stans Testimonial. Couldn't believe how far Lev Yashin could throw a ball!!

Pestered my old man to take me to a game ( he couldn't stand football and hadn't a clue where to go) we ended up in the old Stoke end standing next to all the Leeds fans when we beat them 3-2 and stopped their unbeaten run. I ended up on "grandstand" every weekend when they showed the leeds fans celebrating a goal. Last memory of the match was seeing loads of stoke fans climbing over the turnstile roof and charging up the bank to attack the Leeds supporters .

Just wondering if any of the Stoke fans that always used the Stoke end (cos it was closer to the Vic Pub) ever met my father in law and his brothers? They always used that end
Harold (Adger), Donald, Dougie and Sam Mellor. I'm trying to remember names of their mates that accompanied them - after a beer and cards session in the Vic.

My Dad used to take me in the Stoke End. The first match I can remember was the 3:2 against Leeds when we broke their unbeaten run. I assume the away supporters must have been in that end also but I cannot remember where as I was too young? Was it cheaper to go in the Stoke End compared to the Boothen? I remember going to that match, too. I think I was in the Boothen paddock, but my dad and me usually went in the Stoke End. The away fans did go in that end, but I think that's when the hooliganism really took off. I was really young, then, so my memory is hazy!

My dad used to take me and my brother to all the home games from the early sixties and thoughout the 70s. When we were in our teens and able to get in the Boothen on our own he used to sneak in the ground for nowt. He always went in a shirt and tie and long blue mac and followed the coppers in through that red door near the club shop by the old Stoke End. He would go in, free and make his way round to us in the Boothen before halftime. He also used to hang around and let the police horses in the Boothen, hence getting in for nowt and carried the aways teams kit basket in thru the main entrance.....many a story where me dads concerned...a true character and a beloved stoke fan for all those years.....love him! He finished Sir Stans bottle of wine off on the opening day of the Britannia after the match and once went to the Vic saying he had come to do a quote for painting the dressing rooms...on match day, and they let him in....legend, and he is still with us but has only been the Brit once (when he drank Stans wine)....God bless him.....

Loved the Stoke End from an early age. Even on the most crowded days the group of match day mates would always make my piece of frost bitten concrete available. We used to stand on a folded copy of the Sentinel on cold winter days to try to keep some warmth around the feet. It wasn't too successful as I remember but it served to soften the blow of stamping feet.

Great stories there pal, he sounds like a hell of a bloke. My old man used to take me to the Stoke End and correct me if I'm wrong, there was no segregation then in the early 70's, I remember standing with away fans loads of times. And before they redeveloped it, can anyone remember the huge black board at the back that had all the pools numbers on and showed results as they came in, not actual teams, but pools numbers, and it was sponsored by a local Steel Merchant called BSL Clare, reason I remember so well is that's my little sis's name. Also remember going to watch the reserves, and a certain Garth Crooks playing, he hit a shot miles wide, and my old fella who couldn't kick a ball to save his life volleyed it beautifully straight back at him, me and my pals started chanting " Sign him up, sign him up sign him up". He is 75 now and he still remembers his one and only "Trial" for Stoke.

I used to sell programmes in the Stoke end during 74-75 and 75-76 seasons, got free admission and 1p per programme sold. Played Newcastle midweek and it poured down, soaked to the skin and sold 4 programmes, not even enough for bus fare home. Lots of away fans tried to grab programmes out of the box between your legs, West Ham were always trying it on, but the only time I really got rolled over was by Man City, the cops got there just about an hour too late. Always missed the first 10 - 15 minutes of game while cashing up and due to this missed both John Tudor's goals on his debut, I think against Ipswich, probably the only decent 10 minutes he had in a Stoke shirt.

I remember having to queue to get into the Stoke End the day we played against Pele. It was a friendly against his team Santos. That day the Boothen was closed due to building work. The wooden panels at the back were being replaced with a brick wall. Its funny what you can remember after all these years.!

Laurie Leslie in goal. My first game was an early cup match versus Halifax. I absolutely loved the atmosphere when the Stoke team came out, the one and only Gordon Banks stood only a few feet away from me. The final score was a bit of a disappointment at 1 -1 but i think Stoke won the replay 2-0. After that game i was allowed to go to a few more home games when mum could afford, i remember it been 2/6d to get in at the boys turnstile on the Stoke end, bus fare was 6d one way but we never caught the bus back preferring a bag of chips and the long walk to Werrington then the where have you been till now when i finally got home. I also remember looking for Eric Skeels car passing us usually when we were in Bucknall and giving him a cheer.

Well, my first game was in November '62 against Portsmouth and my dad took me on what he always referred to as the Town End. He perched me on top of one of the crush barriers and, as I was only just four, sadly I remember very little of the game except for something afterwards. We were winning 2-1 towards the end and dad decided he would leave early to avoid my getting crushed. As we walked away, a woman was cleaning the step on one of the terraced houses around the ground and shouted to me "have they won, duck?" and I was as proud as punch to say "yes they have." Thus began a lifetime of supporting the team. I've taken my own children, we still have three season tickets and have done so for donkey's years and I now have a little grandson who is being indoctrinated in the Stoke way as we speak. It all began on the Stoke End and I miss it still. Great post.

Used to go on the old Stoke end with my Old man. Blackpool at home was one of my first games - we lost and Jimmy Robertson scored direct from a corner. They really were marvellous days! Indeed they were. Bill Bentley played for Blackpool that day. I used to stand near the back just to the left of the goal. Was that 67 if so it was my 1 st game too . Harry Greg in goal for Stoke
