Yes we all know where Stoke is but the reason I ask is I live in the north west and the regional news show north west tonight does't cover Stoke news (but they do show Crewe goals on the weekend round up and news from Crewe.) But The Ceefax regional sport pages for the north west (when it used to be on) always covered Stoke City,Crewe and Vale and the teams are still covered now through the 'red button' in the north west sport regional pages.
Now Granada reports used to cover and show the goals from the weekend and midweek games involving the 3 team plus news from in and around Stoke but the show is shorter now and don't cover Stoke but like Ceefax,Teletext used to cover all 3 teams in their regional pages.
On 5 live a few months ago they said the Manchester United vs Stoke City match was a north west derby of a 'fashion!'
So do you see Stoke-on-Trent being the start of the north west or at the end of the west midlands or a bit of both.....Only one way to find out............

We're in a dead zone with no fixed regional identity beyond the city limits, aren't we?
Seems to have pretty much always been that way, but as soon as you get as far north as Crewe or even as far south as Stone, you seem to know which side of the fence you're on.
I think most people see themselves as more northern than midlander, though.

I was always under the impression that the North West actually started from Newcastle, and Stoke was classed as West Midlands.
If anyone asks though, I always stick with North West!

i dont like to be associated with the north west...they DO NOT like us being associated with them, but people from the midlands do...so i consider us in the midlands, but not in the west midlands.

May I just add -- why is it called a Staffordshire derby when we play the dingles! Geography isn't my strong point but I know Wolverhampton isn't in Staffordshire!

Because it used to be in Old Staffordshire before the West Midlands was formed. Obviously History isn't your strongest subject either! Personally I'd class us as "North West Midlands", a bit of both but not really in either. I live in the West Midlands surrounded by Dingles, Baggies, Villa, Bluenoses etc and I also work a lot in the North West area around Warrington with footy fans from both Liverpool & Manchester, and I can safely say that nobody wants to be associated with us!! ;D

I thought this was obvious, we're not in the west midlands at all, neither are we the north west. I've always said stoke is in the midlands, north midlands at a stretch

didn't spot that! I all thought of and refered to brum, cov etc as west mids, but not shrewsbury or hereford, I'd have said midlands for them

Staffordshire is classed as Midlands and Stoke is in Staffordshire. Stoke is therefore Midlands. QED

We have never really belonged to any regional collective. Maybe that is why we get so many stones thrown at us as a club and as an area. It's also what makes us unique and keeps us tighter knit and loud & proud.

Officially the Midlands starts once you get past Trentham Gardens. The North West starts at Scholar Green. Everything else is The People's Republic of Stoke On Trent, enclosed within the the borders of which you'll find the Principality of Newcastle Under Lyme, a bit like the Vatican City exists inside Italy.
We need our own TV station

Well I didn't know Wolverhampton used to be in staffs. I know that there's always been plenty of talk of west mids having that dog leg piece of staffs at the bottom of the county. It always looks odd on a map. I'd still class us as west mids although being from the north of the county in my younger days when buying cars I always bought north west autotrader and not midlands!

I've always classed us as "North Midlands", from when "NORMID" was at Longton and Talke Pits...
mind you, seems the midlands don't really want us, as when the sports section of BOTH regional programmes come on, it's ALWAYS "look at how well The Dingles/Birmingham/West Brazil/WALSALL(ffs) are doing, scrubbing round after a draw.......oh, and Stoke won 4-0...." pisses me off that even after a 4-0 win, ALL they could say was "one goal was good, 1 was set piece, one was a fk-up by Keeper, and the other one was Route 1" I REALLY hope for a Europa League place via FA Cup, so they've GOT to fucking mention us..
Rant over...<bows> I thank you... ;D
