Martin O'Neill yesterday signalled his intention to oversee a major overhaul of his Aston Villa squad this summer by informing six fringe players that the Midlands club will listen to offers for them. Curtis Davies, Luke Young, Nigel Reo-Coker, Steve Sidwell, Nicky Shorey and Habib Beye – who all struggled to hold down a first-team place last season – were told they could leave provided Villa's valuation of them is met. www.guardian.co.uk/football/2010/may/12/martin-oneill-aston-villa

Dunno about Davies, always seen him as a Leon Cort-style defender ie. dunna tackle.
Would love Sidwell and the other 4 would be decent.

Curtis Davies is a quality centre half.

They're all decent only one I'd give a miss would be Davis because we don't need him. We should have a crack at any of the others but particularly Sidwell and Young. Could probably pick the pair up for 10m

There was a lot of talk about Beye last season, especially with the Senegal connection. Does Faye out = Beye in?

i would LOVE us to sign Luke Young. he is definitely a full back to take us up a level.
Shorey is shit, i dont think Reo coker or Sidwell would be fit to play our coveted playmaker role we are after.
Beye is a maybe because he's getting on a bit.
Pass on Davies, never thought that highly of him, plus he would be third choice behind Shawcross and Huth at CB, he wont want that.

I really like Curtis Davies but he's very injury prone. When he got a run in the Villa team he looked the part and was on the verge of an England call up.

Davis would be excellent back-up
Sidwell would be an awesome signing, would be happy with Reo-Coker and Young.
Dont want Shorey or Beye

Curtis Davies is a quality centre half. -------------------------------- Agree CD would a be very decent insurance/back-up if he could recapture that early Villa form. Nigel Reo Coker would be useful to if he is not too comfy/rich/ south orientated to put a good shift in, and add depth and firm up the teams midfield.

Hmmm - Sidwell was also coveted by TP a few years back

To me, it sounds like all 6 would add considerable depth to our squad.

I'm not keen on Reo-Coker. Young is a quality full back IMO and I'd be surprised to see O'Neill let him go. Sidwell would be good.

Beye and Young I would sign in a heartbeat. Reo-Coker isn't much better than what we already have, and the same probably goes for Sidwell. Neither would be worth what Villa would be asking for anyway. Davies, no thanks. Shorey, not sure.

Young would be an absolutely terrific signing and something of a coup. Still an excellent right back and can deputize ably at left back as well.
Beye is better than anything we have at right back currently as well, and Sidwell and Reo-Coker streets ahead of anything we've got in midfield.

Sidwell's Mrs is from Croydon and it has been already published that his is looking to head to London as that is where he has been commuting to Villa from......

Would Sidwell be worth the £5m+ that Villa would ask for him though? This is a discussion that has been had on the message board before, I think.

There has been talk of £3 million for Sidwell in recent weeks. That to me is a fairish price.

Sidwell is way better than what we have now, in an attacking sense. Attacking T'was a little tonge in cheek, but he scored 3 this season. Rory = 0 Glen = 2 Deano = 1 (cup) Salif = 1 So, yeah... attacking.

I have said for some time that I would like Sidwell here and I like Reo-Coker too. Young is miles better than anyone we have for right back.
Strange thing is though...........
Petrov and Milner are preferred in midfield to R-C and Sidwell and yet Whitehead and Whelan completely eclipsed that pair at the Brit. I'm not really making anything of it because I put it down to a one off game and I'd sign their two in a heartbeat to replace ours. It is funny though because they weren't much better than us at Villa Park either truth be told.
I haven't got a clue what I'm getting at though becasue all four of them are much better than what we have. I'm really good at confusing myself.

Correct Rob. Shorey is better than what we have as well. Shorey's Championship standard imo. How he played for England I'll never know. If Deano's worth £5m I think we can safely say Sidwell is.

Whitehead isn't worth £5m though. Which was rather my point. If we were prepared to pay that for him then I don't think we can turn our nose up at the same price for a Sidwell.
