They were Ā£30m in debt in 2002 Don't here Gary Lineker mention this very often. Gary Linekar and Emile Heskey led a consortium including 30 local businesses that took over the club. It's hardly a secret. What should the new owners have done? Deducted some of their own points? I have never heard him mention it on air have you, they built their stadium on the back of unsustainable debt that was written off by them voluntarily going into administration, dirty underhand trick whichever way you spin it.

Are, if you are prepared to put your life and your families life in danger for money well simply that's your decision. And presumably one that no-one takes lightly, hence the assumption that some compassion would be normal towards someone who's done so and ended up spending three weeks in a boat with the dead and dying, but each to their own, obviously. If you are stupid/selfish enough to put your own life or your families lives in danger for financial gain then that's your look out, why should they expect compassion it's self inflicted for no other reason than money is it normal to put yourself and your families lives in obvious danger for financial gain ?

I do not dislike Leicester i just envy them they are everything we could have been. The difference being ambitious forward thinking owners who got recruitment of both players & managers spot on they also took a giant of a defender off us who became a rock in there premier winning team. But he was injured when he was here strange how he hardly missed a game for one and a half seasons including Champions League football after he moved

So not oppression, fear for their lives, just economic migrants then. Could be. Doesn't alter the fact that they must be pretty desperate and some compassion towards them wouldn't go amiss. What are they fleeing from in the Ivory Coast ? I've no idea, perhaps something as simple as the idea of a better life in Europe? Anyone who takes to a boat like that with limited supplies of water, food and fuel must be pretty desperate. So not oppression, fear for their lives, just economic migrants then.

Are illegal immigrants classed as asylum seekers such as those entering in dinghies daily ? I struggle with that issue. Personally I have huge respect for those that have "taken their life in their hands" to escape from oppression. Sacrificed everything to do so. I doubt whether any have done all that to simply sponge on the UK welfare system. Having done what they have done, my heart says let them stay, but I realise that just encourages more to risk their lives. It's the racketeers that should be firmly dealt with but there seems little action on the other side of the Channel by the authorities to curtail their activities. In fact there are reports of French authorities assisting refugees across, but that is probably just malicious talk by horrible Brexiteers. We should remember that there was a time things were the opposite way round. At the start of the 17th century the Pilgrim Fathers left England to escape religious persecution and went to America to become one of the earliest permanent settlements, not forgetting the native population of course. If they are indeed fleeing from oppression which many of them are not from oppressed countries why have they crossed so many safe countries to risk their lives unnecessarily to come to the UK ? I have posted from a government website above the "benefits" of coming here pretty sure that has a lot to do with it I would wager if we stopped all the free accommodation, money, healthcare etc. this would pretty much stop this problem, how come they all lose their passports and paperwork but manage to keep hold of their mobile phones

Ah right - so we've gone from a thread about 'EU citizens in the UK' to 'Government support for Asylum seekers' in the blink of an eye. 'Scream if you want to go faster...' Your right. EU citizens had a right to come here during EU membership, and a right to stay as part of the Brexit agreement. Asylum seekers is a different matter, but nevertheless as one of the richest countries in the world, we can afford to offer them a safe haven where they can restart their lives in the UK. Most will go on to make a significant positive contribution to our society. Much better that than paying taxes to the EU to hand out billions via CAP to the richest farmers, food processing companies, etc. who are ruining nature. This country has been a safe haven for centuries for the oppressed escaping persecution. I also expect a lot of those who have chosen to live in the EU will be making their way back to the UK. Are illegal immigrants classed as asylum seekers such as those entering in dinghies daily ?

If they are working for NMW chances are they will be subsidising their income with tax credits which will out strip any input they have into the tax system, the population is growing beyond sustainable levels in this country hence the need for increased housing and putting further pressure on our NHS, Schools and other services. Why not do as the Spain, France etc . are doing with minimum levels of income guarantees set as I stated for five years before been allowed to apply for citizenship ? You do realise many of those "car washes" are manned by illegal immigrants/slaves don't you
ā You do realise many of those "car washes" are manned by illegal immigrants/slaves don't youā I have no idea how many are or are not. I do know that the one just down the road from our house is owned/run by a delightful girl who is far too intelligent to be washing cars. However, she came over here a few years ago with her brother and somehow ended up doing what sheās doing. They then bought their father over to help out and they now run a very small but successful business providing a service that many of us canāt be bothered to do for ourselves. They have even bought a house There is no doubt she will move on to bigger and better things and I donāt think any slavey will be involved. And, Iām sure most of the immigrants would love to have an income guarantee as I think youāve suggested because many deserve more than the pittance they are paid at the moment. Some of your arguments are as old as immigration itself. I remember many of them being trotted out against the Ugandan Asians in the ā70s but many of them have āintegratedā to a greater or lesser extent and either built successful businesses, or become successful professionals in other fields. (not all, Iāll grant you, but many.) And, since you mention the strains on the NHS ā where would the NHS be without immigrants? They are the backbone of the ward staff from what Iāve seen ā and most are very caring, honourable people. Same with care homes too. There are immigrants who donāt, or donāt want to fit in to āourā ways, it is true, just the same as there are British who live abroad and donāt integrate in to their new local communities. But I think they are in the minority. Most want to āfit inā and do well for themselves & their kin. Thinking about itā¦ā¦. Wasnāt it you who was suggesting you were emigrating to Spain a year or two back? If so, do you think you might learn Spanish and try to fit in with their ways and customs, or would you remain staunchly British? There are thousands possibly millions of UK citizens applying for residency in places like Spain, Portugal Greece etc. One anomaly of the Brexit agreement is that EU citizens can visit the UK for up to 180 days in 360 without any permits or visas. UK citizens however can only visit the EU for 90 days in 180. This is causing problems for property owners abroad many of whom normally spend far more time using their properties than this short 90 day period. āļø The guaranteed levels of income is the biggest issue with Brits looking to move to Europe we should reciprocate that ruling for EU citizens looking to become settled here.

My guess would be that many are Eastern Europeans too. And good luck to them, they are welcome here as far as Iām concerned as most of the ones Iāve encountered are hard working people who think they can make a better life for themselves and their family over here rather than over there. Their hard work will be a positive factor in helping our economy recover after the pandemic and, once they are more established here, they will hopefully start demanding a fair wage for their labours rather than being used as slave labour to drive down wage costs as many of them are at the moment. And besides........ if they werenāt here, Iād have to start washing the car myself again. Edit - typo. If they are working for NMW chances are they will be subsidising their income with tax credits which will out strip any input they have into the tax system, the population is growing beyond sustainable levels in this country hence the need for increased housing and putting further pressure on our NHS, Schools and other services. From the Telegraph :
More than five million EU citizens living in the UK have applied for settled status, nearly double the number thought to be residents before the EU referendum, official figures revealed on Thursday.
It would be interesting if we could have a breakdown of these numbers by nationality, my guess is many will be eastern Europeans, why do we need so many of them we should follow the Spanish 90 day model plus set income level minimums of Ā£21,000 a year for the first adult and Ā£5,000 for additional adults then extra for children if they can't meet those requirements for five years, if they don't meet those requirements no residency. Apply that to all who wish to come and live here

The anti Brexit press are scouring every bit of information to seek justification for their position opposing Brexit. It is logical that leaving a customs union after 40 years membership is bound to have an immediate and adverse effect on trade and commerce generally, just as the immediate benefit is the UK is no longer subject to EU regulations (except goods supplied to the EU), the ECOJ (except where we have conceded a specific agreement) The government has already proposed legislation that is not permitted in the EU, which I have already given examples of in previous posts. It will of course take years to reap the full benefits of leaving the EU. It is notable how the anti Brexiteers change their tune each month. Prior to the trade agreement being struck with the EU last December, they were mocking the huge traffic congestion at the ports, but as soon as the agreement is struck the congestion went away and there is no need for lorry parks. Then there were wild claims about the "collapse" of trade in January with large % quoted. No mention that it might be due to the amount of stock building done in December causing the traffic delays, the lock-down, and the fact that many lorry driver were turned back because they did not have proof of a clear Covid test. Also no mention that trade in the opposite direction was also down by a large degree and the UK actually improved its trade balance with the EU! Now the export levels are returning to normal we are getting sad articles saying effectively: well exports may be getting back to normal, but they are less than they would have been had the UK stayed in the EU. Prior to the referendum we had project fear with all sorts of scare stories which have all virtually proved to be untrue - remember the ones about recession, unemployment, house price collapse? Yes there are some minorities who have suffered from Brexit like Northern Ireland and the fishing industry. The fishing industry though is entering a five year transition in quotas and will be in a different position by then. The graph link (see below*) in the post above is interesting as it starts in 2016 the year of the referendum, the result of which was going to destroy our economy. The reality in subsequent years is that the UK had all time record employment, the lowest unemployment for over 40 years, and record exports in 2018 and 2019. The anti Brexit response was " Well we haven't left yet".
I keep my ear close to the ground and whilst some business sectors have lost out from Brexit like fishing, food exports (why is a country dependant on 60 to 80% of its food being imported (depending on whose figures you believe or how you measure it) getting upset about being unable to sell milk and cheese to the EU?), and London financiers (my heart bleeds), most business people are more optimistic about the future economy than ever before in our history. www.theguardian.com/business/2021/apr/12/optimism-business-uk-leaders-record-high-bouncebackwww.thisismoney.co.uk/money/markets/article-9459455/Optimism-Britains-business-leaders-hits-record-levels.htmlblogs.deloitte.co.uk/mondaybriefing/2021/04/cfo-optimism-reaches-record-levels.htmlThe economy is only starting to recover from the pandemic and only starting to adjust to life outside the EU, yet in March 2021 the UK exported more than in March 2016. Unemployment is lower than expected and the recovery is faster than expected but the anti Brexit band wagon continues the knock the UK. Things could hardly be further from the doom and gloom forecast by anti Brexiteers. In 2019 we saw a slow down in UK investment as many companies in the UK and foreign investors wanted to wait to see if a trade deal would be struck between the UK and the EU. Consequently a lot of investors held back projects. Then the pandemic caused a further hiatus in investment. Now that business is returning to normal that planned investment is being released and there is a tsunami of investment in the UK. businesscloud.co.uk/investment-in-uk-fintech-hits-record-levels/www.theguardian.com/business/2021/may/02/investors-flock-to-life-science-as-uk-firms-break-funding-recordHaving said all the above, I think there should also be a note of caution. With governments around the world pumping money into their economies to promote post pandemic economic recovery, and the restrictions of travel and mobility of labour, there is a danger of shortages, companies outbidding one another for resources, shortage of some resources, and significant increases in wages. These could generate serious inflation, so governments must exercise a degree of caution and react according to conditions. Provided the pitfalls of capitalism are avoided, there is every reason to be confident that now the UK is out of the grip of the EU, the country can now start to be more self sufficient and get the trade balance back into balance after decades of decline, taking advantage of the rapidly growing world markets. * www.cer.eu/insights/cost-brexit-march-2021I wonder why 5 million EU citizens have applied for settled status here
