I asked the two fellas in front of me why they were applauding him and they had no response. The ref had no option but to send him off for what was a stupid tackle knowing he was on a yellow card. Ronaldo or not there was no way he was going to get away with such a pointless and needless challenge that in the end cost us dearly. We were doing superbly and all our hardwork was undone by that!!! Was so pissed off with what he did after he was handling Ronaldo well and to lunge in like that when he was going nowhere was idiotic. The ref was dire I agree but he had no choice- I don't get this applauding players who get sent off needlessly and let everybody down. We were playing so well at the time and in danger of perhaps nicking it- just saw it again on MOTD and have no idea what he was thinking. Let us down today I thought in what could have been a so different story. No excuse for me

I agree he had a good game but his stupidity cost us in the end. Let the whole side down in what could have been our finest performance to date.

I've also often wondered why supporters applaud players off the pitch who have been brainless and done something costly. I remember Lee Snadford hacking a Blackburn player and getting a red card and he, amazingly, was applauded off.

If hed of broken Ronaldos legs or any other players legs im sure the applause would of been a little more.

Same Fuller v Coventry Joe- why on earth some were applauding him after doing such an idiotic thing amazed me.
We had Utd well and truly tamed today - beating them and some dire decisions against us is hard enough but with 10 men is vitually impossible.
Stupid lad Wilkinson.

Giggs suckered him into the first yellow. A seasoned pro smelling something. He was waiting for the hacking....and subsequent yellow card. From that point Wilko's red was inevitable. A costly moment of brainlessness. He'd been steady overall which reminds me of the question.....Apart from that Mrs Lincoln, what did you think of the play? ;D

Post by Soi Cowboy on Dec 27, 2008 2:20:32 GMT
Absolutely- Giggs was going nowhere and Wilkinson fell for it. Completely needless to hack a player down back tracking towards his own goal and in danger of losing the ball.

In fact giggs was going backwards. If, instead of steaming in, Wilko had cut down the angles we might have sneaked a throw in from it?

I clapped him for the reasons above. If he had broke the cheating twats legs I would have bought him a pint as well. I don't think he cost us the points. It wasn't even a good goal. They were lucky on about 3 occasions before the ball finally ended up in the net. Good performance by all today and I feel very confident that with the returns from injury and a couple of good signings we have nowt to worry about staying up this season.

Why was he unlucky? He'd been booked , rightly or wrongly and then made a wreckless challenge that gave the ref no choice? Not as if it was in a dangerous area and the outcome was inevitable. Don't see where bad luck comes into it myself.

If we play with the same focus against most sides we'll be OK. Question is will we? Against the shit we showed we can compete and hustle and bustle and don't roll over for anyone BUT what will we do at WHU? Plucky defeats are useless.

Don't see what was unlucky about it either. Both stick on yellows IMHO.

He let the club down badly today in one rash, brainless moment. Can't see how that deserves applause. He wasn't even unlucky.

I think the guy doesnt think about what he's doing and shows he is way out of his depth. Please get a real right-back in as back-up for Griffen and get rid of wilkinson. He's a complete and utter hack

He's a complete and utter hack were you watching the game mate? I thought Wilko had a fantastic game up to that point, controlling the Shit's (and supposedly world champions) best player very well , hardly the act of someone out of his depth. Yes he let himself down big time with the challenge, but on today's performance looked like he could cut it at this level.

Listen to yourselves.
He was applauded because hes a Stoke player who had had probably his best game whilst on the pitch.
The Giggs foul was right in front of me and all that I can say is that tackling is being forced out of the game. Hacking down it was not. Fuller had to put up with far worse that went totally unpunished.
OK Wilko deserved the second booking but even then I doubt whether you can say its down to himthat we lost.
If we were capable of scoring it wouldnt have been an issue

The lower John Smith's crowd being filmed again by plod gave Staffs police all the excuses for future targeted anti-Stoke action. Some in there are b***** idiots and bring down the good name of Stoke. Applauding a sent off player was the least of the stupidity.

I didnt applaud him, If the sending off was unjustfied i would have done but it was a reckless challenge that he was never going to get away with. The game was tough enough as it was without one of our players getting sent off for such a needless tackle. I felt he let himself and the club down when we could have got something from the game.

I applauded Wilko off cos he was possibly the man of the match imo. I keep getting told that Ronaldo is world class but on yesterdays showing I wouldn't swap him for Cresswell. Wilko made him look shit

The moronic berating of Ronaldo all game only served to make Wilko more determined to try and 'snap' him. Wilko is clearly a thick cunt, and decided to try and become a 'hero' in the eyes of the knuckledraggers in the crowd, by smashing through Ronaldo at every opportunity.
Ultimately, Stoke paid the price, and that loss of a point could send us down.
I'm all for 'songs' which support your own team, but these tribal, neanderlithic, braindead, aggressive 'songs', have no place in football. They only serve to create tension and bad feeling. The fact that children sit in a stadium whilst thousands of so called grown adults chant 'Wanker' at the top of their voices is an embarassment to Stoke City FC.
Football for some people is just an excuse to behave like cavemen. It's pathetic.

I applauded him off not for his tackle on Madarse, but for what he had contributed to our game prior to it. His first booking was a poor decision, but as he was marking against Mardarse, the ref rightly anticipated that he would make other challenges so got the first on in early, giving him plenty of time to send him off later. Paranoid? Probaly niot knowing the quality of the official we get at the Brit. Rooney should have gome off for his elbowing and constant mouthing, and Mardarse should have gone off for kicking out, but come on, Manure players, what do you expect?
