West Brom are poised to steal Scott Carson from under the noses of Stoke City after both clubs had bids accepted by Liverpool yesterday.
Stoke made the first move to agree £3.5million with Liverpool and began the task of trying to convince the England keeper of where his international ambitions would best be served.
The 22-year-old, a £1million signing from Leeds four seasons ago, met Stoke manager Tony Pulis yesterday morning and was due for negotiations with West Brom before deciding on his next move after they also matched Liverpool's valuation.
However, despite promising talks with Pulis, Carson was last night leaning towards West Brom and may finalise terms this morning.
After arriving at Anfield with high hopes of establishing himself as first choice for club and country, Carson struggled to dislodge Pepe Reina and made just nine appearances, prior to spending last season on loan at Aston Villa.
He was widely expected to make the move permanent, only to suffer another setback when Villa manager Martin O'Neill coolled on the idea and pursued other targets instead.
Though the fee may rise to £4m with add-ons, it still represents a climbdown for Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez after he valued his reserve keeper at a minimum of £8m last season.
Meanwhile, Liverpool's hopes of raising more funds for their transfer targets were dealt a blow yesterday when Juventus confirmed the signing of Christian Poulsen from Sevilla - seemingly ending their pursuit of Xabi Alonso.

How do The Mail know what Carson is thinking? I am not sure that writers at The Mail know what they are thinking themselves most of the time.

Bugger. Losing Carson would be a great shame and especially to a club likely to be down in the relegation scramble with us. Well a least we know the price for Fulop will not be a sticking point if Tony decides to go for him instead ;-)

It was always going to be a case of not done until the ink is dry with him. Afterall he's (despite his clanger) an England international available at (in Premier League terms) a knock down price. The fact is, that if other clubs who have been in the Prem longer than/before us start sniffing they have more money for wages. Still it ain't dead yet.

Load of rubbish I reckon. They haven't said he's been to West Brom, or if he's been in contact with anyone at the Hawthorns. Just making a story from the fact we didn't finalise the move today.

PackmoorPotter: To be fair to the Mail they have been spot on with a lot of their coverage with the Carson deal. The Mail on Sunday was the first paper to link us with Carson.

There's no way we've got 4 mill to spend on a keeper no matter how good he is This has probably come from his agent anyway if he's in the process of negotiating wages with you

As has been said it may be more paper talk, we'll get a better indication tomorrow. There were always going to be other clubs in for him at that money, it's just a case of hoping we've put a good package together combined with the promise of an automatic pick in the first XI.

It does seem strange that nowhere else has mentioned that West Brom have also had a bid accepted. All reports seem to be that we have had one accepted by Liverpool and that he's been at the ground today to negotiate personal terms. Stranger things have happened, it's just a little discomforting to have this come out at such a late stage (if it's true of course, which it may well be for all I know).
Ah well, either way, it's good to see that Stoke are genuinely in the mix to recruit a bit of quality, and established Premiership players at that. (Should he end up elsewhere, I'd just like to state that I won't be one of the suicidal ones - in fact, I'll probably go into hiding for a couple of days because I don't think I could take the number of negative posts that will be on this MB!)

My main concern is, if this is true (and I'll take your word Potters11 on the previous accuracy of The Mail) it is a bit of a high profile miss.
I hate it when the media run stories of players who are about to sign as it all gets a bit embarrassing if there is a last minute hitch.
I think I just want to go to sleep and wake up on the opening day of the season so I don't have to go through all of this speculation and waiting!

Nothing on ssn about it, still saying we are signing him. Correct - 5 mins ago quote: Stoke are very close to completing the signing of Scott Carson on a 4 year deal

Said exactly the same EMP, at least it looks like we have the cash to spend if we were prepared to offer that much for a keeper. Still hopeful of us getting decent players in Carson or no Carson.

Well if they get Carson perhaps we should go for Paul Robinson (keeper)?
I still have faith TP has done enought to persuade him...I'm anxious to see what tomorrow brings!!!

If you think about it, Carson has probably been living in Birmingham for the last season while on loan at the Villa. He will have made mates there. If he goes to West Brom, he can remain in Birmingham. Where would you rather live if you had no ties to Stoke-on-Trent, Birmingham or Stoke?

Would be nice if we signed Carson but I wouldn't cry me eyes out if he ended up in Brazil. I'm not so worried about the goalkeeping situation - I'm more worried about the defenders and midfield.

A really high-profile snub wouldn't be helpful, especially when the soddin' Baggies are the beneficiaries. I won't be too bothered about missing out on Carson himself - certainly not at £4m, even though it would have been a bit of a statement of intent and showed we meant business. At least it means we aren't shy of splashing out on the right player.
