Now we know we have a 7th consecutive crack at this Championship thing starting in August.
We'll thankfully be shut of Leicester and hapless Sheffield United and likely Burnley and Luton coming down from the Prem won't exactly tear up any trees.
It must be to get involved at the business end of the table, a flirtation with the play-off competition at least?

The league is low on quality and anyone half decent will do well if they can cope with the attritional nature of the fixtures coming thick and fast. |

No they haven’t. “It’s not been good but it’s not been the worst” It absolutely has been the worst in the last 20 years. “We don’t need another overhaul” Well we need 7 new first team players which imo is a fucking overhaul. We have a nucleus of a very good team, the trick will be identifying the areas that need strengthening (not that difficult I suggest) recruiting the quality that’s needed and integrating them into a cohesive unit. It doesn’t have to be ‘baby steps’ if done correctly and competently. |

We do need more players which is poor after last summer but those responsible have left the club. Fans made it known they weren't happy with Neil and Martin and the club acted. |

After 6 consecutive bottom half finishes I'd be happy with top half with better football and looking like we're building something with potential for the future. Promotion should be the aim, it's a poor division and it just needs a few smart signings in the right position to go from our position to playoff contenders. But with our recruitment in recent years and FFP hindering us that might be a bit much to ask in one window.

Pretty fucking awful team and they walked it. Recruitment is massive and why we need most of a new team. We need to build a solid foundation and go from there. But that’s 7 new players imo, probably 8. And all for the first team. |

Realistic is probably top half with an outside play off push. I'd hope for more as a fan but the word realistic lays heavy.
We can't and won't go from struggling for 6 years to a realistic tilt at promotion, we just won't.
Overall with the teams coming up and those coming down, I can see a closer division than ever before. There will be a fag paper difference between top and bottom.
Ultimately as a club we need to drop promotion from all conversations and just concentrate on trying to be better at everything we do. Get into that marginal gains mindset and you'll eventually improve yourself into the top 6.

You don't go from 18th to flirting with 6th just because a summer passes. Well, I actually said so myself yesterday in the matchday thread but that was a "spur of the moment" kind of thing. We should forget about promotion and concentrate on building a sustainable team/squad that can forge a future promotion bid. Of course if the opportunity arises, because next season there might be 23 teams that are worse than us, then we should go for it, but again that's not realistic. Keep going up in the back of the mind, but don't set it as "must do", because it will, in all likelihood and based on the past six years of experience, only lead to heartbreak. |

After relatively high expectations this season has been horrible, the only consolation for me is the momentum we might be taking forward, and the improved attitude of the players under SS With good recruitment there is no reason we can't be pushing for, at least, a play off spot...but this is Stoke City and anything can happen  |

Yeah MON turned us around, but there were still a few bumps in the road. When we came back after Covid I recall a few dreadful results and performances which kept us in the relegation mix. I really like the look of Manhoef and Junho. Add a decent centre forward and we’ve got the makings of a bloody good forward line there. The midfield is ok and doesn’t need much adding to it. Also, I’ve seen a few things recently that I like about the mentality of the players. Coming back from losing positions three times, a multi player scrap against Plymouth, coming under siege at Sheffield Wednesday and getting a valuable point. All positive things that we’ve not seen for years really. |

We should aim for promotion. Anything else is defeatist for a club of our financial clout.
However, realistically I’d be pretty happy if we finish in the top half, which we’ve done only three times in the last sixteen seasons, and win more league games than we lose, which we’ve done only once in the last sixteen seasons.
It would also be nice if we could retain a manager for the entire season, which we’ve only done twice in the last seven seasons.
I’d also like to not leave any home games thinking “Why did I bother today?”.

A good loan signing, a dominant centre back, start to create belief, a collective stiffening of the fibres. Those kind of things. |
