I am a huge fan of rock'n'roll 50s music and therefore can't think of any many British artists who came anywhere close to Elvis, etc. The only British artists I was really a "fan" of were Lonnie Donegan and Chris Farlow. Many may remember Chris Farlow but who was Lonnie Donegan? Chris Barber's banjo player! In 1957 he was as big as Ed Sheeran today. (Why does my predictive text kept typing Donovan?). Can't imagine who will dominate the hits in 2057. www.officialcharts.com/artist/2950/lonnie-donegan/

Van Morrison good shout I think the jam and style council is better than his solo work Think I must be the only person living in Burnley that did'nt like The Jam and although Style Council and Weller's solo stuff isn't my cup of tea,I didn't mind it.

It's a desperately thin list.
We've come up with some great bands but never really delivered on the singer / song writer thing.
Chris Rea perhaps.

So I just watched this. And it led to a bit of discussion I don’t really start music threads but who are our best male solo artists? I was struggling to remember who should be in it Top 5 in (taking into account talent, star power, longevity etc ) Bowie Elton George Micheal Tom Jones? Robbie? Who is missing? Ren Recently secured number one album in the UK...... independent artist with no companies behind him or radio playings just all done by himself, his brilliant videographer mate and over a million followers Here's a quote from sinade when he first released Hi Ren.... "Holy motherfuckin SHIT! Someone just showed me this at the weekend. This Archangel from like, twelfth heaven or somewhere, has only gone and made the entire history of songwriting and performing look like a three year old’s birthday party at Burger King."

For me
Cat Stevens Roy Harper Richard Thompson John Martyn
I'd also include
Peter Gabriel Elton John Van Morrison
but for me I'd include them in a separate category because they lead bands rather perform solo. The people in the first list have also played with others but also probably more famous for their solo work.

Jamiroquai probably falls into this category really. Jay Kay being the only permanent band member. Could say the same for The Streets.

Isn't that just the case. Chuck in the Americans and there's only Springsteen, Iggy and Dylan (living) I'd cross the road for - (and Prince, Tom Petty deceased - though Jacko was quite mesmeric live even if I was not a huge fan of his music or predilection for primates). I never was struck on the Burger Addict with the rhinestones and the curled lip. The likes of Jay Z and Kayne West (or Ye or whatever) can do one - as can most of the Country bores with the possible exception of Jack White. No doubt there are pelters due from the Neil Diamond fans.

To be fair if Chris Waddle hand saddled himself with St Glenn on Diamond Lights this thread could have been done and dusted pretty early.

He’s done decades of reliably really good solo albums which have just gone under the radar for the large part. I think he’s great but it’s all subjective I suppose And his lyrics are mainly far from depressing. Girlfriend in a coma is as delicious as music gets
