Hearing reports that Peter has passed away. Very sad news. He used to frequent a pub I ran in Stone when he lived down here and was a genuinely decent guy. RIP Pete.

Really sad if true (appears it is unfortunately), shows the difference in modern day football compared to even 20 years ago, I've just read on Wikipedia that after his retirement he was a delivery driver for Gilberts Furniture on Fenton Industrial Estate.
49 is no age. Thoughts with his family, RIP skipper x

Rip skipper You should always be remembered as apart of the Ninian 02 team. Great memories for the 750 in attendance.

Such a shame, 49 is absolutely no age at all.
One thing I remember about him is how well turned out he was - like he respected playing for Stoke. Kit was always worn properly and seemed an excellent pro. A calming presence alongside hard man Shtaniuk.
RIP Peter Handyside.

Very sad.
That’s a shocker. Virtually an ever present in the season under TP after promotion.
Seems like yesterday…

Sad to hear this. Rarely let us down and did his job every week.
Only great memories of him leading the team.
Clarke Hanyside Shtaniuk Thomas what a consistent and well balanced back four that was.
Thanks Peter, rest in peace Captain x

Will always think of him lifting that trophy as we ended the dressing room curse at the Millennium on such a great day. Him and Sergei were a great pairing. Sergei was the beast, Peter was more calm but could still mix it.
Think he occasionally frequented one or two of the boozers in Stoke town with some of the more well known lads amongst our support at the time. A proper captain at just the time we needed one.

Good player for us was Peter, never got the plaudits of a Shawcross or Huth, but a very dependable centre half
Rip Peter, you will be missed

Very sad news. His name cropped up on here only a few weeks ago when we were talking about how brilliant the defence was during Gudjon's promotion season. Also a big favourite with Grimsby fans - forum.thefishy.co.uk/Blah.pl?m-1707512301/s-0/

You're not wrong mate. Peter could definitely mix it. I remember on his debut against QPR him being lucky not to get sent off. Really gutted to hear this news. Can't help but have good memories of the fella. RIP Skipper
