Awful news. Bizarrely the missus mentioned his name the other day because his ex wife lives around the corner from us in Stone.
Great captain and he was a proper calm centre half. What I wouldn’t give for his type now. Great memories of that final in Cardiff.
RIP Peter

Sad to hear this. Rarely let us down and did his job every week. Only great memories of him leading the team. Clarke Hanyside Shtaniuk Thomas what a consistent and well balanced back four that was. Thanks Peter, rest in peace Captain x Would love Shtaniuk as he was then in todays team. Didn’t have him long enough but remember him being like a vidic type. Scored a great header from a corner one game too.

Beauty and the Beast at the back - watching him it was the first time it really resonated how a football brain gives yards of advantage. The amount of strikers who’d jump under the ball for a header whilst he stepped back to control it was ridiculous!
The side he captained had massive heart and bollocks - for me that’s what a Stoke side looks like 👍

Has this been co firmed at all or is it a rumour? If true, I imagine he's a significant enough figure in our history to merit an announcement from the club.
One thing that I never understood was that he was captain and virtually ever-present in the first season after promotion, but we released him on a free transfer at the end of the season. He had a stop start season at Barnsley and then his career just petered out into the non-league, even though he was only 30.

A hugely overlooked player in our history when you think about it.
Captain as we eventually dragged our arses out of what was then Division Two and then nearly ever present the following season as we just about managed to stay up. The Premier League years may have never happened without a few of the better players from that team laying the initial foundations. Look how long Sheffield Wednesday have been floundering around between the two divisions, for instance.
RIP Peter. A throwback in a lot of ways as intense professionalism kicked in but a proper player and bloke.

www.qosfc.com/news-6321We are sorry to hear of the untimely death yesterday of Peter Handyside. Although never formally registered to us he turned out at youth level for a period before turning professional with Grimsby Town. In a decade at Grimsby he became club captain and played in England's 2nd tier. Moving on to Stoke he was also club captain there before finishing his time in senior football with a season at Barnsley. He also played for Northwich Victoria and Hucknall Town. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
